Looking for a generic handlebar mount
What have you guys been using for mounting these DIY light setups to your handlebars? I'm specifically looking for something available for purchase, not something that has been custom fabed. Hopefully similar to what the major commercial offerings come with that are handlebar mountable. TIA!

EL34 (hoffmanamps) is in N. Carolina.
Here's a place that sells Cateye mounts.
Price + shipping is pretty close between the two for a comparable bar mount.

holy cow that's a huge mark up on the Cateye parts! Just order them direct from Cateye:
31.8mm bracket
multiple bar size bracket
spacer out of stock at the mo'
helmet mount
They have an incredibly hostile website, so don't try finding any of that stuff just by, you know searching for it. As much as their website is a PITA to deal with, their shipping is fast and reasonable ($3 usually) and the mounts are excellent.

Thanks for that! I had an old dead link to the Cateye parts site, so I thought it was shut down.

edit - there I go repeating what Matt posted.
I use the Cateye stuff on all my builds - cheap and it works well. Nothing against the Marwi, I just went this way.
About the H-27 Spacer - As Matt said, Cateye is out of stock on the part that mounts to your light head - Part # 533-8730 (this is different than the H-27 bracket which is a 1" handlebar mount) Fearing they might be discontinuing those essential parts of my DIY builds, I emailed their support team. A reply came back quickly that that part will be back in stock Feb 13th, 2013.
The H34 bar mount is what you want for handlebars- much easier to use and fits all sizes.
the 2 helmet mounts they list both work just the same - buy the cheaper $8 one while it is still in stock, the "new" one is $10.

Here is the Cateye page with all the headlight parts.

A bunch of top notch replies here, thanks for all the help!

I've used both EL34's Marwi mounts and the cateyes.
Cateye mounts are smaller and more suitable for a small build, but horrible to get hold of in Canada.
EL's bar mounts are very good, he's reliable, but I found the helmet and headband mounts bulky.
I wish someone would set up an eBay store or something similar for the Cateye mounts.

The part that slides and locks onto the handlebar bracket, what is it normally called?
Does Cateye sell those individually?
-
that's the spacer that slides onto either the handlebar mount or the helmet mount that Matt referenced. It looks like they are out of stock currently but some stores may have some stock.
-
Ah! When I think spacer, that's not what comes to mind.
Thank you. I'll be watching for replenishment as I really like the system.

The Marwi Handle bar and helmet mounts are really nice
Several of the top builders here buy them for their custom lights they sell

El34, would you consider adding the Cateyes to your inventory? They're cheap to order in the US, and very compact.
I still think your bar mount is better.
I would like to try cutting down one of your headbands for a cateye mount, to have the best of all worlds.
-
I don't think they would let me be a dealer since I am not a bike shop
The only reason I am allowed to buy from Marwi is that the US distributor closed down and I bought all their inventory (bike light stuff that is)
I don't think they have many if any people selling Marwi mounts in the US and so they let me
-
Would they let you buy a whole whack of them? If so, do they care that you sell them again?
-
Most companies want you to take a bunch of their products
I could find out
I looked at the Cateye's I don't really think too much of them comopared to the Marwi mounts

The helmet mount is small and simple, good for a little build.

My single XM-L housings get a bit overwhelmed with the big Marwi mount and QR.
It's great for a larger light head.

How does the light mount on that
Is there a 2nd snap on piece that goes on the light?

You bolt on this little attachment, which they call the spacer:

They seem to be out of stock.
Matt's posting above has links to the bits.
The helmet mount retails for $8, while the spacer is $2.
They wouldn't ship to Canada, or to either of my LBSs, but Matt kindly got me a couple.

I posted above, their estimated replenishment date is Feb 13, so there's a date to circle.
If anyone reallllly needs one to finish a current build, I have a couple spares still in the bags for as-yet undetermined future projects.
