    Cree XR-E bin U5 245 lumen

If you have read this thread LED intensity has decreased you will know that I have some led's that are not performing as expected.

I rang Mark at Cutter http://www.cutter.com.au/ today to order some new LED's and he tells me Cree are now selling led's binned as U5.
Mark tells me these should emit 245 lumen @1000mA
After reading the data sheet at http://www.cree.com/products/pdf/XLamp7090XR-E_B&L.pdf
it appears that the older Q2 binned leds were rated at 87.4 lm @350mA and the new Q5 are rated at 107lm @350mA.
Am I just slow on the uptake or is that about 23% more light for the same amount of power?
Soooooooo I ordered the U5 binned leds and I will fit them when they arrive.(usually the next day delivery)
By the way Mark also tells me he can now supply nflex and bflex. So I have another bflex on the way as well.

    Regards

    Peter

Has anyone been able to confirm there is a new "u5" binning or is this Q5?

Cree do not have a U series flux bin, perhaps Mark from Cutter got a little confused.

The Q5 bin is currently only offered through limited distributors, which does include Cutter. While a Q5 bin will be visibly brighter then a Q2 bin, your eyes may not notice an effect quite as radical as 20%.

They will still be nice and bright though!

Sorry about the typo, should have read Q5.
And I didn't see the post by Dave a couple of days before I heard the news about the new binned leds.

I'd better update that, the estimated release dates are already old!

Not yet that I know of, I do know some of the flashlight boys are already playing with a few though.

After playing around with a few lower bin emitters, I think I’ll wait for the R series bin before building / modifying a light for them, or replacing my Seoul emitters in my current light.

I will be replacing a pair of P4's with Q5's. I hope I see the difference. They are going in a flood light and the P4's disperse the light so much that it just doesn't look that bright.

The P4's in the flood are WD while my helmet light P4's are WG's. I prefer the green color of the WG over the bluish WD. The new Q5's are WG's to match the helmet light. The WG makes color look more natural and warm. On a white wall test, you can see the green tint but this is not a white wall hunting light. It looks great on singletrack with pine trees and straw.

The difference between the two is quite noticeable. I can't imagine what some of the other bins look like in a real world environment.

    Hi Msxtr
I'll take some comparison shots tonight in my driveway and post in a new thread.
The optics really make the difference -they would work pretty well even with the P4 Cree.
I have been waiting 6 months for these to turn up.
The optic is the Carclo 10200
    http://www.cutter.com.au/products.php?cat=12

The Q5 is noticeably brighter than the older Crees as well when you take a photo.

    Cheers
