Their quality control remains impressive though - just two recent examples

Much like you Chris and not really done anything for a while. Have some MGT-2's waiting to go into something but nothing yet. Bought a ski boat so might make some tower lights for it

Most of the DIY builds have yet to catch up to where you left off.

    Cheers Guys
was hoping for a massive increase in led output and that kickass optic to have arrived

I have some Mtgs but no further idea what to make as they work so well in those huge reflectors did want a couple of spots for the van

currently using the MTG Spider on the helmet. and the triple led in the large reflector on the bars

no anodising capability now as got rid of the chemicals so less worry when the grandson comes to visit

I cant believe the prices for the chinese stuff must hve really caned the main light makers sales wise
Probably why Lumicycle went up for sale

Its good to see folks still plugging away on the diy stuff .

I got some inspiration from you and made a double MTG-2 light using some aspherics from Ahorton. I direct mounted the LEDs to copper, which carried the heat straight back to the fins and the heat management is absolutely outstanding. Better than my Quazzle's based triples by a significant margin. It's a great set-up and I am slowly working on another dual MTG-2 for the bars, with no optics, just frosted glass covers. I have just changed to an alloy bar to act as heat sink and I plan to make them really minimalist as per usual, possibly even hiding the driver inside the stem. I've done a small amount of cutting but haven't posted any progress.

I documented my helmet light build in the "Bazooka Light" thread.

    Welcome back.

Cree just shipped us XPG-2 in S2 bin, Recom has a new wired 36V dc/dc driver 22.1◊12.55◊8.5mm, potted, wired and up to 1.5amp output, MCPCB in copper, MKR, XML, MTG, so much stuff, so little time

Also a new driver player in town. Matthemuppet was working with DrJones from BLF and came up with the MobyDrv driver. Similar to an l-flex, but fewer options. Simpler, smaller and cheaper.

    two things for me:

1 - direct copper mounted LEDs - sinkpads, noctigons etc. More light at standard drive currents, waaaaay more light at crazy drive currents

2 - the growth in DIY programming of Nanjg drivers (which I haven't quite figured out yet!). For simple lights this allows you to set up your own UI, modes, power levels, battery monitoring etc. With a chip swap you can even get temp sensing. Not really competition for Taskled drivers as those are far easier to use (no, really) and better made, but nice to have the option nonetheless.

Everything else is mostly evolutionary. No big changes in outputs, optics or battery tech. From the real world it seems like the big light names are differentiating themselves from the Chinese competition with more bells'n'whistles - light programming, fancier battery monitoring and so on.

What about batteries? I need to replace some 18650 7.4V 2200ma, and first thing I noticed browsing ebay was that they're offered with two sets of leads "25C" or "30C"....

Sounds like Lipo, and there's lots to be known before you drop into that world. Plus, I'd personally never buy batteries on ebay on account of the crap (dangerous and/or faulty) that gets flogged.
The study du jour: can one's reputation be artificially inflated by simply putting a request for rep in one's sig?
