    bright cheap torch?

Looking for input on a cheap torch. Dont really have a good reason or use for it but just looking to shut my uncle up... He has a 90 lumen light he bought for like $120 and thinks its untouchable and brightest thing made. So I was looking on DE at their cree torches and was gonna buy the 800 lumen p7(i think) but someone said it only puts out 250 or so lumens. How accurate is that and would it be better to buy one of the smaller 230-250 lumen lights. I am still working on my D-star lights(lazy and other things came up) so I'd rather just buy a cheap DE or other light that is going to last at least a little while of playing and rubbing it in his face.. Just cause he always thinks he has the baddest stuff around its fun to watch him get so mad when he finds out he spent way to much on way too little. Let me know. Thanks in advance!
    Eric

Chris, have you tried to mod that with an MCE, if so what's the beam like?

No I have nt Stu I put in a XRE R2 and swapped the aspheric for one of those I got a few weeks ago .

I have had a play with the lense and an mce it will go from all 4 dies seperate to a real flood so you could tune your beam quite well .

It might be a nice host for the upcoming X M series if we can find a driver smaller enough to fit that'll push the right current.

Sorry OP for the off topic.

    trout,
you modded one of these small torches? Do you plan on doing more or one more(hint* hint*) and what was the cost to upgrade?

It runs on 3 AAAs in a holder I dont know if they do a 18650 li ion model that would be a better one if so .
the lense in it is supprisingly good and I dont think the one I put in was much better I had an XRE on a 20 mm star so the mod was just 2 solder joints to make .

the way the front slides makes it not water proof so I dont think I would use it for biking use in the rain .

I would have put an XPG in if I had one on a 20mm star . that would be a good power boost for minimum work and expense . it would give you a slightly larger beam on full throw but would certainly upset your Uncle.

I could do one but the shipping around the world would make it an expensive light
There must be someone on here a bit closer if you are not happy with a soldering iron .

also what about something slightly more expensive. like this http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.13481

or whats the best option under $50 or right near there? and where do I get the batteries?

After continuing to look i need to get a package with batteries and charger with the light. Based on that get me around $60 or slightly more shipped to US for all that. I am a light dummy so help would be appreciated. even if its something modded like yours trout. I am capable of doing the soldering but am a not smart on choosing the correct light to make this an easy project as far as aquiring parts and exactly what to do. I guess its one of those thing that once I do it once or see how its done then it probably wouldnt be so bad to do.

again this is a meare toy as I am going to start building a couple dstar lights soon for the bike...

    how bout this charger:
    http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.1251
    these batteries: 2 packs
    http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.26247
    and this light:
    http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.16501
    as well as this light:
    http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.14450
would bring me to $82.94 or I could just do 1 pack of batteries for a total of $72.53 or I can just do one of the lights. Let me know if there are better lights to use..

I have one of the UniqueFire flashlights with the XPG LED. I use it for a helmet light and I think it's perfect. It's the single mode version. I had bad luck with a multi-mode P7 MTE P7 light from DX.

BTW... Run time is over 2 hours on a trustfire 2500mah 18650

    They are $28.

the amount and quality of light is much better than the Q5 based Trustfire 801s I have.

I've had one of those chargers for 3 months. So far it's worked well. So have the two slightly cheaper versions.

On any one charge they charge both batteries to exactly the same voltage (within .01 volt).

On a number of charges though it can bring about differing final voltages (even after 5-6 hrs) from one charge to the next.

I'm not sure if that's the batteries or the chargers.

Thats pretty much the way of things with cheap electronics...there are always some small variations on occasions. However if I saw maybe a +/- 0.2volt difference in output I might be concerned ( depending on the age of the battery )

The P7 D-bin SXO called MTE SF15 ( SF-15 maybe ) puts out a a great real 700lumens in a not greatly focused everything in your garden is white and looks like it's day light, that impressed my mate finally.

Look for the 280Lumen XP-E's though if you want throw / range.

XP-G's only make good flood torches really, P7 wipes it's butt still, but 1/2 the run time.

still havent made a decision on a light yet.
Basically I want best throw and brightest light. dont care if it is 230lumen or 700 at this point. Like I said usless toy right now so I'm not worried about the run time. I agree as well as a few modes at most and that I am not really interested in the super multi modes. Someone posted this recently in a different forum: http://www.amazon.com/Fenix-P3D-Leve...6&sr=8-1-spell Ialso want to be out the door with batteries and charger for under ~$70 USD.
