    bit confused, throw....

I am not smuch interested in DIY, but I understand you are most likely the guys who can explain the advantages and disadvantages of P7 and XPG etc.

I have a P7 light. It's great. I want to buy another light.. I have seen a 3 x XPG light.. tiny little reflectors, perhaps 10mm around each XPG, and a part frosted lens..

Do these kind of lights throw as well as a P7? I understand they are known for lots of flood.. but what kind of throw might I expect from a Bike Ray III type affair compared to a P7 type affair?

Rule of thumb #1: Bigger optics have better throw than smaller ones

Rule of thumb #2: Bigger LEDs (the diameter of the LED chip aka die) have less throw than smaller LEDs if the same size optic is used

    So:
A P7 can have as good throw as a e.g. XP-G, but you need a larger optic on the P7 to achieve it.

    and a 3 x XPG with 3 x 10mm optics can have as much throw as a P7 in a Lupine Tesla/magicshine size optic?

Triple XPG with proper optics have much better throw than a P7.

No. You would need the XPGs in a 35mm triple (3 x 18mm) to get good throw.
