    ahortons aspherics

    Hi all,
It's finally time I got off my lard arse and did something with the aspherics I got from Ash last year and was wondering if anyone that has them could chime in with what sort of gap they have used from base of aspheric to top of star to give a punchy, fairly tight helmet light? From memory I'm thinking around 5 - 6 mm seemed to be good but haven't had much luck with the MTBR search.

    Cheers

Troutie used them in his spyder eyes so if you look up one of those threads I'm sure you'll find what you're lookin' for. Other usesr here also used them, but can't remmembr which, I'll try to find those threads. I thing focal point for those lens is about 14mm but I might be wrong. I'll chime in when I find more.

Edit: Understater used them in this build.

Thanks toaster. From memory Brad used them as well.

That link is broken but I remember the thread you are talking about.

Fixed the link, the thread is called "More MTG-2 Goodness". Contact each of them, lights were built with different emmiters so there might be slight differences in focal points for each LED, just so you know where to start. You would have to fine tune the distance yourself anyway to get the desired beam width/shape.

I reread Trouties spider eyes thread and brads focusable xml thread and they both were at 12mm for a tight beam that didn't show artifacts down to about 5mm for the widest beam. I'm going to set up a test bed and try a few different optics as well as the aspheric at a couple of different heights.

    Thanks again for your help

Pretty much what I had in mind about the test rig. You're welcome.

Brad are those dimensions from the top of the star or from what the star sits on? Thanks, I found the other thread yesterday but had forgotten about this one.

Emu, dimensions are from the top of the pcd that the led is soldered to to base of the ashperic.
