What in the heck is a Kona Bear?

i've heard it's the predecessor to the Kona Dawg. a friends' friend's friend is selling one, haven't found solid info on it yet... the dawg looks decent framewise, not sure about the parts.

It became the Dawg after the first or second year. I think the name was taken by another bike somewhere, not really sure.

    Basicly Bear=Dawg

The Bear did precede the Dawg

but Marin (as I recall) threatened to sue, as they already had a model called the Bear. Kona announced that they were going to change the name to "Beer" but wussed out and called it "Dawg" instead.

Heck, I'd ride a bike called Beer. As it is, I have to live with my Bear.

miles (I'd never ride a Dawg)
    It's 7:09 California time

The Bear came out in '02. It is a 100 mm (front and rear) full
suspension bike, part of their 'backcountry series.' There were
two models, the Bear, and the Bear Dee-Lux.
I have the Bear and it is the most beefy, solid, 100mm bike you can
find. It feels more solid and durable than some of today's
    "5-inch all mountain bikes."
In '03, they re-named it the Dawg. Same exact bike except
for they switched from a Race Face Prodigy crankset and
Hayes HMX-1 mechanicals to a Deore crankset, and
    Deore Hydraulic brakes.
Now, in '05, they changed the Dawg to have 5 inches of suspension
since that is what is being marketed to everyone. Supposedly
that is what everyone NEEDS, is 5 inches.

Anyhoo, if you have a chance to buy one, and it's still in good
shape (mine is after 2.5 years of riding) get one. They were
a great bike in '02 and are still great compared to a lot of
other bikes out there in their class.
Get rid of those Hayes mechanicals, though.

I've been told that the top tube length increased with the name change.

    my favorite bike.

I recently acquired a used (as new condition) 02 Bear. I spent about $600 & some extra parts upgrading everything; I have to say it's my favorite bike yet. I used to ride more FR/DH & this was supposed to be my transition into a more XC trail riding type of bike, but the thing's built so tough, I still fee like I could abuse it.

I heard similar about the name...it's the same as the Dawg, but supposedly Kona was threatened by a beer company or an indian tribe or something...I guess the best people to ask would be Kona.

I highly reccomend the Bear or Dawg, it's a fun bike.

    Love the Bear.

I rode a Bear for about two years. One great trailbike.

Had the JPG files laying around from the 2002 kona catalog showing the bear specs. I had a 2002 Bear and saved these at the time.

If you can't read them, PM me your email address and I will send you the full res versions.
