Excellent, Sir ! Time for questionnaire....
You can bolt a derailleur back there, donīt you?
How is that the paintjob looks so different from the Kona webīs pic ? Much darker, almost like 03 Explosif. (Iīll try to post it here)
Did you have the chance to weight the frame naked?(I mean the frame)
Is that a 100 mm fork?....no, is not! Or..is it? Iīm sure Kona says the frame is for 80mm.

    Thanks a lot

Oh, well..the derailleur question is obvious from this pic...You call them "mechs" in UK donīt you?

Yeah there's a derailleur hanger back there on the dropout, also has cable guides for front and rear cables. The Unit frame which is the dedicated singlespeed does not have those.

I too was surprised at how different the colour was to the Kona web site, I like it though :) I didn't get a chance to weigh the frame (well, I did, I just didn't think to do it!).

The fork is an 85mm Marz Marathon SL, you're right that the frame is designed for an 80mm and I didn't want to mess up the angles by putting a 100mm on there.

Doug, since you are a Kona lover this might be the wrong question to ask you, but you do have quite a collection there so here goes, having a Stinky and a Dawg, do you find that riding the longer travel bike is more fun than the Dawg? I guess Im looking for some insight as to the Dawg's worth, being a 4"er that weighs about 30 pounds or so, how do you like it?
    Thanks, Bob

Dawg's great,But my favorite ride is definately the Stinky, that said, the way my Stinky's set up you can't really trail ride it.I do have much different bike preferences than a majority of riders.I don't care how slow I'm going when I'm just trail riding so extra weight doesn't bother me and there aren't long climbs here in So.Indiana so if I have to get off and push so what? My Dawg's up to about 35 lbs due to coil shock and such,I'm actually using like a big BMX bike right now, that's the skills I wanna work on. I have previously had my Stinky set up with a single crown fork and front derailleur and I thought it did just fine on 20 mile rides, plus it still DH'ed damn good.If I had to go with only one bike that's what I'd do. I AM different than most bikers though,I don't like anything less than a 68 degree head angle, even for XC,and with the stock 4 inch fork my Dawg has about 70.I put a five inch travel fork on it and now I like the stability.(hindsight says a Coiler would have been the hot ticket for me,but it wasn't available when I ordered).

P.S. My Chute has GREAT geometry for me,68 degree head angle with 4 inch fork,It's so stable I can absolutely hammer through the nastiest rocks and roots without fear of endoing,I can ride so much faster on it than with traditional XC geometry. It's what I take for those day long rides in the woods.

    My two
This gives me a chance to try and post my first picture, so I hope it works.

I got two kona's a 99 kula, and the new 04 explosif. The picture shows it as a 1 by 9 before I made "the full switch the SS". Right now I got Paul disc Fhub and WORD hubs laced to Mustang tubeless rims with 14 gauge DT swiss spokes. Custom, hand built wheels, light, mean. Been SS on this puppy for 2 months. I run a 2000 Atom 80 which suits the geometry of this bike well. The explosif has a bit more relaxed fit than the kula's, which is why I run the 80. Gear ratio is 33*17. The feel of steel is buttery. I love this bike. I've clocked some two hour plus rides on my computer and run out of trails to ride on diablo. I'm looking to buy a Dawg frame so I can slap my MX pro eta 105 on it and all these parts that are lying around In the spring downieeville and tahoe are a bit more fun on a trail bike.....

Have you seen one of these before? Ltd. Edition Stinky
Here is my Ltd. Edition 2001.5 Stinky Five. I contacted Joe at Kona to get some literature about my bike and he said none existed. In fact, he said my bike was such a limited model that it would be difficult to prove it was ever produced. He may be right. I've only seen one other one here in the Bay Area.

This is one fun bike to ride. It weighs 39 3/4lbs exactly as you see it! Thinking of getting some Dangerboy plates and other than that it is perfect.

    thanks Doug,
it`s a 2004 scrap. you`re right, they don`t sell as a frame, but i got it for just around $250 at my lbs. it`s a 15in frame w/ sherman, D521, RFdiablo stem, full XT, THE saddle, azonic bar, maxxis, etc...

Sold it today and already having those second thoughts like, what was I thinking? Called the LBS and no Stinkys until mid April. Now the dilemma, do I wait or do I order a primo frame which is avaliable now and build it like I want. The cost would be more, but oh the ride I would have.

Acme, need to know a few things about the Kikapu. Is it strudy? The frame is good?
I am 6,2", 200 lbs and ride kinda hard but no jumps. Will the Kikapu suit me or the Dawg is a safer choice?

  • 02-25-2004

I'm 220 and the Kikapu has been nothing but sturdy and stiff. I do some small drops and jumps with it and it just eats 'em up. I would probably gotten a Dawg if I could have afforded it, that way if I start going bigger it could handle it better. If you're not jumping at all or doing drops I think the Kikapu is a great bike, it's a great value for the price :)

Took the Dawg for a ride today...
...but, to my grief, the cockpit on the 18" is too short.

Where on the frame do you measure standover clearance?
When I was off the bike, I had about five fingers between my jewels and the top tube.

My inseam is about 33,4" . That meens that if I got the 19" Dawg I wouldn't have any clearance left for it has 33,5"

This is a major bummer. I was really looking forward to the 'pup'.

Seems like I have to shed a few lbs not to wreck the Kikapu.

Be nice, ride safe, blah, blah, blah...

    My 03 Explosif
It was a warrenty frame. Built-up with odd and ends Sram Centera rear XT wheels bontrager ceramic rims on XT. the fork is off the original 94' Hot. Which helps explain the bigger tire I refer to it as the T.H.C. custom spec because most of the parts were lying around the Totally Happy Courier office. BTW Kona and my local shop were incredabliy genurous in warrentieing a 7 year old race bike.

    Thanks,
Yep, I know, this is a picture of it as soon as I got it home. I have a pair of Shimano clipless that I'm going to take off my old bike and put on it and will difinately lose the reflecters. I also just got a Kona Bear bell that I'm going to mount on it to keep the walkers happy at the local trails (the constant ringing can get irritating after a while, but the walkers try to get rid of the bikers every year, so anything I can do to keep them happy)..

I love bike snobbery, of course you should get a light but as I said anything helps so why not beside some weird notion of cool? All my reflecters died in use, there gonna break or rattle lose eventually so I say let nature take it's course, get a liittle extra safety and annoy the fashion nazis.

The bike DOES ride as good as it looks... The frame is the same geometry as all the other Kona-bikes. No worries there...

The spec is also ok. Its not top of the line, but at the price you won't be disappointed. And when you got a nice frame its just question of changing the parts as they wear out!

I just ordered a Cindercone frame for the wife and I can't wait to set it up :D

    Here`s my 1997 Explosif...
Totally rebuilt and refinished. I bought this frame online from a guy living in British Columbia, Canada. Every part on this bike came from ebay.

It had some light indentations that I had filled in with braze. Then I power coated white. What a beautiful finish. I just took it out for a spin last week for the first time. A fantastic riding frame. Smooth, plush and predictable. The SID Race really helps. A great light weight Colombus MAX OR tubed frame. Highly recommended.

    My first Kona too.
'04 Kikapu Frame built with some left over parts and a '03 Marz MX Comp 105mm fork. Still dialing in the suspension though. I'm 205lbs and tried the Float at 190psi but still haven't gotten full travel in the rear after riding some rocky descents in Southern Cali.

    1998 Kona Lavadome frame
my main xc ride, that i'll keep forever, is a 1998 Kona Lavadome 18" green steel frame (~4.5#). i've replaced everything from that bike, but the cool retro hardtail frame, adorned with many scratches and dents (i use clear nail polish to ward off rust).

'03 marz mx 105mm eta fork 4.4# (dang, i wish i had known that the '04 mx would have 120mm)
dave's dream wheels (rear: ust&standard dual rim)
hope mono mini hydro disk (sweet!) on front (got no rear disk brake boss, don't need 'em)
avid ti rear brake with sram lever
mamahon ti seatpost (& thompson alum seats post as backup, 'cause that ti post has bent)
sel flite gel saddle with ti rails
    chris king headset
marin xc riser bar with 120mm stem (soon to get Moots stuff...)
xt hollowtech drive train & shifters
    steel water bottle cage

total weight = 27#s (not counting saddle bag, H2O, and tire pump)

    picture to be posted...

wondering if the 2.4" wtb 'weir tire will fit on this frame?

my next ride: kona stinky or the stinky delux or da santa cruz vp-free...(?)

2002 Bear Deelux. Got the frame end of last season and built it up.

Seems to be the only coil sprung Bear/Dawg Deelux out there. I'm a little nervous about switching to air cause I'm a little heavy (200 lbs) and ride real hard. I'm one of those maniacs who accelerates into rock gardens just to see what'll happen.

Any other maniacs out there on Dawgs have blowouts on the floats?

    Fred here, from Canada...

Here's mine, KONA Caldera 2001. I just finished, minutes ago, the spring upgrade spree!
Can't wait to ride it tomorrow. 3rd year I'm having this bike and it rocks!

Upgraded fork to Marz0cchi MX Comp ETA
Upgraded rear brake to Avid mech.
    Upgraded bottom bracket to XT
Upgraded wheels/tires to Sun Single Track with Panaracerr Fire XC Pro 2.10
Removed big gear, replaced with a Blackspire Ring God

    I think I'm in love...

4 on the floor is OK with me!
This is my dawg in XC trim (noleen fork, time clipless, superlight wheels, etc), but i'll probably be putting back on all the "Freeride" stuff (stock fork, flats, stock wheels, etc.) for tomorrows ride, though. It has handled everything i want it to up here on the north shore, so i'm pretty happy about that. With the little bit lighter stuff, too, it'll happily handle 5 hour rides and climb ok. Still thinking about getting the rear shock "Pushed", though.

don't have any pictures...but it's a king kahuna with 9spd xt/xtr, noleen fork, lp bars, and front disc...(no rear tabs)
best bike I've ever had, and shouldn't need another for a long time....

    These are my babies

The 02 Stinky is black (SE) with an 04 Super T, dangerboy plates, avalanche DHS etc..

The 02 Bear I just built from the ground up, bought the frame on MTBR of course. Its got an 04 Z1 freeride eta because I broke my 02 DJ1 on my stinky :(, I' ve got the HFX carbon 9 brakes, ceramic D521/EX 721, a romic rear shock, etc. Its all new cept the frame but for some reason it feels like its barely got any travel, must be too much XC riding on the Stinky :)

Here's my 2004 cinder cone, all stock exept for the pedals ( I ditched the crappy wellgo for some pd m520 clipless )

This coming from a 10 years old ultra beaten up stumpjumper, wow I love my new bike, I've had it for 3 months now :D

In case your wondering about the ski lift behind my bike, it's not a downhill area, just a small ski hill opened in the winter right downtown with pretty decent xc trails in the summer

    :p

Also, I know it's no good to upgrade for the sake of upgrading if your parts are good but I might have some money to throw on the bike later in the summer, I would like to make it lighter and better gradually, what would you recommend

    - fork
    - crank
    - new disc brake kit
    - wheels

    My 98 Explosif
I bought this as a frame in the summer of 98 at Doug's Bicycles in Belleville ON. I also have a project 2 fork for it and I plan on trying a SS conversion. I have a 5 Spot but the Explosif gets a lot of use as it is a sweet handling ride. This photo is from a recent trip and yes it's a hotel room and no I'm not telling what I was doing with the bike there, it's private.

Here's my Blast w/ Cindercone frame. The Blast I received after a long wait had a big dent in the bottom tube. Kona warranty was out of 19" Blast frames, so they sent me a Cindercone frame instead.

    So far I've upgraded:
    • Grips
    • CB Mallet C Pedals
    • Avid Mechs (185 up front 160 in back)
    • Avid SD Ti Levers

I have a Kona Kahuna as well... an 02 I might add. Walked into a bike store looking for a full-suspension bike after doing some kayaking last summer, and there it was. Took it out for a ride up to the park in the city of Fayetteville, down some trails, handled pretty well, felt good. Came back, dropped 600 bucks on it, and rode away. The only thing I don't like is the rear shock doesn't have a lock-out. It's a little bit heavy, but good enough for Captain Thurmond's Challenge, Black Bear, etc. The only pic I have is an action shot... so:
