Kona Hei Hei tire and water bottle clearances

I have a '13 Hei Hei DL demo sitting in my garage that I need to decide whether or not to buy. I really like the way it rides, but the one I have - a 16" - can't fit a water bottle. Can someone with an 18" tell me if it shares the problem? It looks like the Hei Hei 29ers have always had a pretty similar scandium frame with tapered head tube, so I imagine previous years are representative too.

My other question was what other tires people are riding with on the rear. It looks like a really tight clearance back there. My hardtail has a 2.25" Schalbe RoRo and RaRa that I'm pretty happy with; anyone try the 29" versions of those in the Hei Hei?

I've run a 2.3" Purgatory SWorks in my 2012 HeiHei DL. Apparently the 2013 rear triangle had tire clearance improved, I can't see 2.25" tire being an issue.

Water bottles are tight, I have the 20" frame and I run a side loader cage with a shorter bottle. My camelback carries the water, my frame carries electrolyte drink.

Good to hear about the tire.

I figured I'd have to go to a side-entry cage, but I can't even fit a small bottle, no cages or anything. Which is irritating - if anyone out there has the 18", I'm still waiting to hear from you.

I have a 19" and I can fit most water bottles in my frame. A friend has an 18" and he has trouble fitting anything larger than a small bottle in his frame.

I have a 19 inch hei hei, and use large bottles, but a side loader cage is the way to go.

Sounds like your friend can fit a small bottle, though? That's what I was looking for. Given the miniscule changes in geometry, I think I'm leaning toward the 18" size.

    Thanks, guys.

Yep, he hates that he has to use a camelbak for more remote rides, but that's the tradeoff, I guess.

Thought I'd update the thread for anyone else who's asking the same thing.

I did end up buying this year's 18" Hei Hei DL. A side loading bottle cage fits, and actually a large water bottle works pretty well.

The cage is the T-One Anyway.

So far, I really like it. Simple, and does the job. I don't have other side-loading or adjustable bottle cages to compare it to, however.

And, last but not least, I'm really enjoying the bike.

My 17" Tanuki DL will fit a water bottle, but only just.
