    Kona Explosif

    Hey guys,

I'm pretty much new to mountain biking. I picked up an older Kona Explosif; I'm having trouble identifying the exact year, but I think it's around 1996 or so.

Problem is, the Manitou 3 fork on the bike is completely shot. I'm planning on switching to a rigid fork, but I'm unsure what size "suspension correction" I should go for.

Surly makes two forks, the 1X1 and the Instigator. The first "corrects" for 80 mm of travel, the second for 100 mm of travel. From what I can find, it would seem the 1X1 would be the better option.

The XT components on the bike seem to be in good working order, and I plan on keeping them. Worth the work to maintain?

Can anyone out there help me? I'm super excited to have the Kona frame. It seems like a rock solid steel frame and I wanna treat it right!

Here's a few pics of my bike:

    Thanks!

I'm sorry, but that isn't a Kona frame. It looks to have an 18" (c-t) seat tube and a 9cm head tube. No size 18 Kona ever had a 9cm head tube, although plenty of other makes did (e.g., Jamis etc).

The decals are from a 1999 Explosif, but they are clearly not original as the down tube decals have been applied the wrong way round (i.e., the one for the left side is on the right).

If you supply the serial number (under the bottom bracket shell), that might shed some further light on what the frame is.

On the brighter side, it is quite likely to be possible to restore the Manitou fork at fairly reasonable cost.
