    Do you have one? I followed the development of those internal gearboxes over on the Nicholai forum for awhile but haven't checked in lately. Are a lot of people using them? How are they working?

    They seem to be working fine but they are heavy & expensive

    They are rare, expensive and unproven.

    As a recovery Hammerschmidt owner I would not pull the trigger on an expensive dedicated Pinion frame until there is a lot more data on how well they work. The two critical issues for me are what is the real world efficiency [the HS sucked in this dept] and how reliable is it long term?

    If you are on a road trip and your Pinion is KIA you can't simply head to a LBS and get a new one or even fit a derailleur setup to your bike.

    I use IGHs on my hardtail and rigid MTBs so I am all for internal gears once they have proven themselves, but Pinion is a very expensive beta testing situation.

    It makes zero sense for any North American bike brand to invest in a dedicated Pinion frame at this point.

    I was really happy when I realized the HS was a bust that I could re-install the stock Shimano drivetrain in 30 mins. If I had a dedicated HS bike there would have been a lot of crying and smashing!

    I think the bigger teeth on the new chainrings, the clutch, and the 1x10 and 1x11 killed the internal drivetrain for some time. All of these new improvements can be used on all bikes. In addition, many of the suspension designs require chain tension to work to work properly, except for 4-bar, FSR, horsy-link. Not to mention lighter weight.
