My new old stock 08' XC204 build

Well, I found such a deal on a 08' XC204 frame that I decided to do a build for my first full suspension. The build is complete and the bike I now call "Burnt Notice" is done!

I was worried the gold would be overkill but it worked out OK.

Very cool build. You did a much better job than I did on my 604. You can have it in any color you want as long as it's in black and white. Of course I was trying to buy parts at discount prices. That is a limiting factor.......

I too bought some economical parts. The brakes are 2008 Hayes Gram on discount; the shifters 2008 Deore XT as well. I cut some corners otherwise I would have had a $3000 XC204

Instead I upgraded the key areas and have a $2000 bike. Yeah, crazy I know, but it is basically a spec'd out bike with things to my liking. Well, minus the rear shock..........but when that one needs replacing I will find something a little higher on the food chain.

Post some pics. of your 604, would love to see it.

BurnNotice - did your headset come with a crown race? (the headset that came with the frame - not the headset you bought separately) I got my frame today and I did not see a crown race. Thinking I made a mistake and didn't know what I was talking about, I went to the LBS and they confirmed there was no crown race included. They also said my current crown race wouldn't work with the new headset. They did manage to find a headset on their shelf for sale that had the same crown race I needed and said, let's call it 5 bucks for that part (as opposed to me having to buy the whole headset if I wanted to get it rolling asap) and we'll add it with the rest of your headset and call it a day, so that's what we did. Very nice guy.

Anyway was just curious what you had to say on the subject. The bb shell is getting faced tomorrow morning and I have all of my parts laid out in the garage for assembly. Fricken anxious to get the work day done tomorrow so I can get to it....

I believe the crown race was in the plastic baggie. I never really looked at it too hard because I knew I was not going to use that headset. Heck, if it was there I would have sent it to you for free. Don't really think anyone will buy it since it is a cheap headset.

I mean it will work just fine but usually folks are upgrading and this one is low on the food chain. Somewhere between amoeba and maybe plankton.

That was nice of them to sell you a piece only. Unsure what you mean by current crown race not working with the new headset????

I will loook and see if it does have the crown race. Hey, post pics. of the build as you do it! Love to see folks build up their bikes.

The crown race ended up working. The bike tech told me when I went to pick it up he's not sure how he thought it wouldn't work when I was there when we discussed the 5 dollar crown race out of the other head set, but he said it matched up fine on the work stand. Hey, 5 bucks saved. Whatever! :P

I took some pictures late last night in the garage but I want to get some taken of it outside tonight. It's not *completely* done though cause I want to grab a new front derailleur @ the shop today. Surprisingly they have the same XT front derailleur for the same price as PricePoint, so I'll grab that and a 9 spd cassette/chain. All I have are 8 spd's, and it aint working so well with my 9 speed shifters.

I'll grab some pictures later. I rode it around the block though. I fricken love it. I couldn't help but to notice that WheelWorld took off medium KHS 204 frames right after I bought mine. But today they have mediums listed + extra large? Are they somehow still building these? I thought these were 08 closeouts?

Finally weighed her in. Not as bad as I thought it could have been with the Outlaw wheels. Came in at 31.7 lbs. Not too shabby for a rock solid build.

I need to reweigh mine then, I got ~28.5lbs on mine and I don't feel like it's a super light build or anything. (new tires are .25lb heavier each though, so should be 29 now)

Not a light bike by any means. With the Outlaws I put on the bike it really up'd the weight maybe a lb. or so.

For a xc trail bike it is solid for sure.

That's friggin bad~a$$ dude. I am really starting to wish I had waited and gotten a 204 instead of my 304. Though the single-pivot is nice for it's simplicity.

Hmmm, since mine is the same color, maybe I oughta pimp it out. Make it feel new.

Thanks guys for the compliments. I did take her on the maiden voyage last Saturday. A total of 10 miles of easy stuff; climbs; dips; rocks; roots; and wet terrain. Lots of single track as well. She did okay. Minor adjustments but nothing failed and the ride was great. Found myself sitting more with the rear travel unlike on my hardtail. It soaked it up very well. The brakes are even spot on and when cornering tightly......no rotor rub from flexing like on my hardtails QR setup. The 20mm definitely added alot of stiffness to the front fork that is noticeable.

No. I hate dirty bikes and washed her off after getting home. I will take some dirty porn pics. next time while on the trails so I am not tempted to wash her!

Forgot to mention, the 160 mm travel fork I chose for the build I was worried while seated would bring the front tire off the ground on steep climbs. But to my amazement, nary a lift unless I really made an effort. Seems to be gorunded very well. I have to admit, I had my doubts after installing the fork and wished I had opted for something in the neighborhood of 130mm but the 160 was like jelly to bread!

All in all as a first mtb build up by myself, I am quite pleased. I have built loads of roadies in the past and this was my first stab at spec'ing out a mtb and all the parts to compliment it. I think for a first time I did okay. Maybe a few things I would change which are minor but for now, gonna ride this baby like I stole her!
