Help me identify this IH bike... I might be buying it tomorrow

    Hey,

I found this bike on craigslist and the owner doesn't know the model but said it was purchased in 2007. Here's the pic the owner put up... I know it's not the best pic. to me it looks like it has FS but I'm not sure.

Doesn't the rear derailleur look messed up?

Hard to tell from that photo. If it is messed up, it can be fixed and you can negotiate the price downward accordingly.

The thing to look closely at is the rear triangle (swingarm) and the bottom of the seat tube.

On the swingarm, look for cracking near the front part of the drive side (raised) chainstay near the weld. There've been quite a few photos posted here showing what a cracked one looks like. There'll sometimes be a crack on the non-drive side too, but my impression is that it usually starts on the drive side.

Look for cracks at the bottom of the seat tube too, though I'm not sure you'll see anything. I've broken two front triangles at this location and I had no warning that it was going to happen.

If you see cracks at these locations or anywhere else on the frame, you should pass on the deal. The bike won't be worth buying except for parts. Take a look too at the guy that rode the bike. If he's a heavier dude and rode it a lot, it's probably best to pass on it too.

Blurry picture, and the guy can't even read what model it is? That right there makes me wary.

I think it is an MKIII, but can't really tell. If it is, I would not touch it unless it was being sold for parts.
15mm is a second-best solution to a problem that was already solved.
