I was thinking about doing a straight 3 speed using just my front derailer and a single-speed kit for the rear. I was wondering it anyone has used an internal geared hub and front RD. together. And if it was reliable/durable...

You're much better off with a 3 speed hub. You'll get about the same gearing without the med to long cage 2 pulley tensioner required to take up the chain slack. Plus, shifting will be a lot easier. What you're looking at is doable, but I'm sure you'd like the gears in the hub better. Alternatively, keep the gears in the back and go with a single chain ring in the front.

Keeping the front gears kind of negates the benefits of what you're trying to accomplish. IGH and rear derailleur shifting are much crisper and faster to shift than any front derailleur. Plus, you get some extra obstacle clearance when you dump the big ring.
