Clicking in gears 5-8 while coasting. Video attached.

okay, did the atf job. set everything up right. coasting tons better... few days later, this. doesn't seem to be skipping. cable and dots are lined up perfectly and triple checked.

chain tension is where it should be.
    Any guesses?

it sounds to me almost like the pawls on the axle are sticking open when not engaged.

I would take a guess at...... The chain is too tight,
Based on getting it wrong when I installed mine on a HT (with chain tugs) the chain needs less tension than for a single speed setup,

It's not. I knew the appropriate tension when I installed it. and I double checked it when it started making the noise and then I checked it a third time last night before I posted this. it's not chain tension.

I know you mentioned you had checked it in the original post, but as a process of elimination try it with the chain slightly loose and see if you still get the same problem.

Other than that, nothing else come's to mind presently, good luck getting things sorted

I already did that. heck, I took the chain off and held the sprocket with my hand. It's not the chain. I knew it was not the chain before I started this thread and It's still not the chain.

What's odd is this doesn't seem to be creating drag. just an annoying noise. engagement in all 8 gears is still solid.

    Sooooooo................................... not the chain then

Maybe a side effect of using a thinner lubricant than grease?

those who use ATF say it gets quieter.

And it does still have grease. in all the places it had grease before I repacked it. I put fresh grease in all those spots.

Part of me wonders if the grease is actually the culprit here, perhaps it's worked it's way into a part that wasn't greased before, And it's causing something to stick.

Normal, ATF makes the clicking louder, not quieter. Ride and enjoy.
