    I am 195 with gear and I run the Monarch plus @ 210psi. I also only run the monarch in the lower shock mount hole. It blows through the travel too easily in the upper hole.

    UZZI - will it crack?

    Hi, i am writing to you from Germany, so please excuse my poor english.

    For a long time the Reign X was my favorite bike that I would have liked to build up as my Do-IT-ALL-BIKE as soon as I can afford it. Unfortunately I read and heard more storys about broken Maestro-Linkages than I would have liked to. From hat time on, the Reign X died for me.

    Now, I found several bikes who use a similar system to control their rear suspension. One of them is the VPP of the Intense UZZI that could be my next bike.

    Now I wanted to know if anybody has heard about problems with this lower suspension-linkage. I would like to use the bike for hard Endure Action, Trail surfing, long jumps that came across and also the one or other drop into flat, because in nature jumps or drops are seldom shaped. Additionally i am interested into Vertriding/Trial (over some rocks for example, not for street-tricks) and would like to have some statements about the flexing rear. Will this link crack during Trial because it has that big flex?

    Unfortunately there are very few Intense bikes in Germany because they are very expensive and it is difficult to ask someone.
    The UZZI frame costs about 2390 Euro = 3385 Dollars !!!!!

    What are your suggestions?

    The Uzzi is possibly one of the best frames I have ridden and would be perfect for the type riding you describe except trials.
    Most dedicated trials frames are HT's with very low standover, the Uzzi has too much travel and a bit burly I would have thought.

    The only thing I have found with the VPP link is the bearing age quickly with side loads, this starts to show up as flexing rear, easily fixed with new bearing (I x set replaced in two years)everything else is very robust.

    The first uzzi's cracked, now they have a stronger rear end which should be fine.

    However if you have problems it's really up to the dealer how well they are sorted out, sometimes in Europe this can be a problem.

    First, I entered a link here to show you what I consider a "trial" section the UZZI could eventually also handle.




    Second I found a not so nice thread about problems with ACTUAL not old UZZI frames. That alarmed me, because my favorite Reign X turned into a lemon when I read about broken links of the Maestro system. But the ones on the UZZI frames did not break on the rear suspension linkage but on the chainstays!!!!???? Which company tries to save 10g of material for the disadvantage of the customers? They tried to fix it with more material but it did not help. I would have filled out the complete rounding. Any opinions about that?

    Whichever bike you consider, you`ll find threads like that. Those horror-story threads are easy to start, and once started, easy to follow. It`s much harder to find threads focusing on how great a product is....
    The chances of you not being satisfied with this machine are very very slim...
    Regarding price, how about ChainReaction in the UK? I live in Japan and mine was shipped from one of the US internet retailers - fantastic price (relatively) and no hassles...

    Great vid, caught it yesterday when someone posted it on FB, although slightly less rocks that's pretty much the type of terrain I have on my door step - forest, stream/river crossing, stepped climbs, narrow ledge single track.
    Unfortunately I can't ride as well as that

    Mostly riding this stuff on a HT or SS1 depending on conditions but I am thinking either a Tazer FS or Tracer 2 would be a perfect solution.

    Uzzi is presently setup for light DH, may pay to check that rear triangle.

    But the UZZI is not that far away from the Tracer 2 in terms of geometry and weight I think. Shouldn t it be possible to set it up quite similar (light) if needed?

    Very true, both the Uzzi and SS1 come out to about 36lbs with a burly build, single crown forks and a Rohloff.
    What I have found with Intenses is they all give the same great riding sensation/feel but have subtle character traits.

    I suppose I would look at how your riding breaks down, your weight/fitness and how much travel you need.

    Just think the Uzzi may be less suited to hopping around than say a shorter travel option, and from my experience with the HT's against 6"+ travel I am thinking a light 4" travel frame would be ideal for the type of riding your looking at.

    I would offer to let you have a spin on my rigs to get an idea how they feel but I suspect the drives a bit far

    Gretch how do you like the Float, compared to the Totem? I`m just installing the same fork on my large; the Dorado is off. Really looking forward to the ride... I was thinking about limiting it to 170mm like dropadrop`s RS....

    The Float is head and shoulders better than the Totem IMO... just the weight reduction alone made the bike so much more agile. And I am pretty stoked on the new Fox with Kashima because it is buttery smooth. Some kind of black magic is at work here.

    Thanks JZ! Using the bottom hole, the travel is now 6.5" and at the top hole, its 7". The bottom travel setting feels much better with the rp23, it accelerates well, better than the coil shock. It does well over the rough stuff yet I don't feel alot of middle stroke wallow and have yet to bottom out the shock. The shock tune that I got is M on the Velocity and Rebound and 175 on the boost valve with the sag set at 25/30% (f/r). It pedals really well with this shock, I rarely use the propedal. I am also loving the low bb and slack head angle.

    Thanks bro, I'm really lovin the new geo. No, there's no clearance issues at all. The original coil size is 8.75 x 2.75, so I just took off a quarter inch from the eye to eye and stroke. The end of travel is exactly the same position for the two shocks.

    A few changes... ti spring for the DHX RC4, dumped the Straitline Amp pedals (garbage) and replaced with plastic Nukeproof Electrons, Blackspire bar, Selle Italia SLR XC saddle, Thomson seatpost, Mavic Deemax wheels.

    Did you get the shock custom valved for the Uzzi? Im thinking of getting myself the RC4 also. Im wondering will it work properly straight out of the box.

    No custom valving... the RC4 seems to have enough adjustment to feel right for my riding style. I may have it tweaked when I send it in for servicing but at the moment I am happy with the peformance. The bike really stays glued to the ground when I want it to, and still has enough pop for jumps.

    Having just finished polishing my T2 I know the work that goes into it - nice job. Put a rub on type of sealant on it occasionally and it will keep the polish for a pretty long time with little maintenance. I polished my TVP almost a year ago and it still looks really good with just regular cleaning.

    @Zuzi, I am running a 65 head angle. I'm liking it so far but I haven't had a chance to take it on any steep stuff yet, just some single track. I was planning on ridin some DH trails this weekend but it's been raining here for two days. Damn the rain I'm itchin to ride!

    Couldn't wait any longer and had to share my Uzzi build in progress(hoping to have it completed this Sunday finally!):



    I pulled the Lyrik from my Tracer for now and it will probably be great for local trail rides, but I am debating on a 180mm for more fun/chunky days. I'm currently thinking either a Marz 66 RC3 Ti or a Rockshox Totem Coil.

    Had planned to install an old set of Elixir CR's on it that I already had, but decided to go with something new and these babies came yesterday:

    You will definitely appreciate a 180mm fork on the Uzzi... nice choice of brakes as well. I have the M4s on my Uzzi and they are great.

    What about for mostly trail/ all mountain riding, you think a 180 is ideal for the 2012 uzzi? I have a lyrik 165 currently on my 6.6 but want to get a new uzzi.

    I think the Uzzi geometry is optimized for 180mm of fork travel... otherwise you are turning it into a glorified Tracer 2.. Just my opinion.

    I had a 170 Lyrik with 0-stack headset, changed to a higher stack height headset (and converted air Lyrik to coil so it stays higher up in it's travel).

    I'd say it depends a lot on the trails you ride, the BB is pretty low, so at least on our really rocky trails I had to find a way to get it up a bit. Actually a 170mm fork with heigh stack hight headset will be about as high as a 180 with 0-stack (even higher when compressed). For downhill I wouldn't mind an even longer fork, but I'm sure it would start to be a hindrance on trails.

    I had a Tracer too, and it felt very different even when I initially just swapped all the parts over. The Uzzi is a lot more stable, plush etc, more like a tractor when going up hill or straight terrain (better traction, slightly slower to accelerate but keeps up it's speed better). The different G3 dropout positions also has a big effect on how the bike feels, but the slacker positions lower the BB quite a lot. So with a low fork you might be forced to use a steeper position, meaning you end up with a steeper HA. On the other hand the steeper settings also result in a more nimble ride due to the shorter wheelbase.

    Clearance is just right(the lower post spacing is actually more than it looks it the pic due to the crappy camera angle). Btw, I'm running Hadley hubs and it seems that the common problem hubs are Chris King and Industry Nine from what I've read while researching.

    This is what I was thinking with the Lyrik (using an external lower cup to compensate a bit), but my Lyrik is a 160 U-turn so it's still a bit short. It will end up probably being temporary since I have a Tracer as well and can use that for more mellow stuff. I will have the bike finished tomorrow night and hopefully will get to test a Totem on it this Saturday. I got selected by Rockshox to do a suspension demo on one of my bikes

    Just added a CCDB Air to mine in anticipation of the snow melting.... Very impressed so far with the shock... no real ride time yet, but the installation and setup went smoothly. Weight is at 33.8 lbs.

    Awesome on the CCDB Air gretch! Keep us informed when you get some good trail time in. How do you like the Straitline Silent Guide? I'm going to end up running mine 1x10. Spent a bunch of time trying to get 2 different derailleurs setup and then my nice new X0 shifter broke right before I put the bike in my rack to head for the trail. Ended up riding it in my 24T granny

    It's complete for now and I got a ride in on San Juan trail before the rains hit in SoCal this weekend So far, I love this bike. It does need a bigger fork, but it actually rode surprisingly well with the 160. Plus it let me get a ride in on it and an initial feel for the bike. Looking forward to a fun summer!!!

    OCMoto, nice looking rig....

    I've done a few laps around the hood on the CCDB Air and first impressions are very good mid-stroke support and extremely plush off the top of the travel. Good things in my books. The ramp up after mid-stroke is quick though even with HSC backed right down. Apparently that is a trait of this shock that I won't have a chance to test until I can get in some hard DH runs. The Straitline guide is nice.... no moving parts and it has a flush mount back plate that doesn't interfere with the lower VPP link.

    So I'm pretty much ready to move on to a 180mm fork now. The dilemma is what to get

    I have been riding a Lyrik Coil U-turn for over a year now(on my Tracer and now 4 rides with it on the Uzzi) and it was my first coil fork. I absolutely love the feel of it. What I am struggling with now is whether or not to go back to air for keeping the Uzzi's weight where it is(or close to it @35lbs) and whether or not I will want/need travel adjust. If I go coil I am looking at either the Totem or Marz 66 RC3 EVO Ti. If I go air and possibly travel adjust, I am thinking Totem or Talas. I personally have never owned a Fox fork but have read many mixed reviews about them, especially the Talas. I do prefer to work on all of my own equipment and have actually never had one of my bikes or suspension components in a shop. I think I can get past that on the fork if it means a solid weight and performance difference.

    Thoughts from anyone out there with experience on a variety or forks? Especially on the Uzzi itself?

    p.s. for gearing reference I am running 1x10 now with a 32T chainring and 36 cassette

    I've used a Totem and am currently running a Fox 180 Float on my Uzzi.... honestly I prefer the Fox, but that's just my opinion.

    I would prefer the Marzocchi 66. Its a nice fork. Or a Fox 180 Van. Coil is so much better than air.
    Perfomance is more important than weight.

    I would go with the 66. That'll be my next fork. Im still running an old one from 05 and its perfect. They had some bad years but the new ones seem to be back on track. So that gets my vote. Plush and serviceable, open bath is money

    Recently had Totem Coil, currently Lyrik Solo Air, but had a short ride on fellow's 66 RC3 Ti and I must say it's absolutely brilliant - so plush that it should really relief hand fatigue, not to mention front wheel traction. Marzocchi had some bad times but i think that now they are back in the business for good.

    Just finished this build after selling my Tracer 29. It may have company in a month or so

    Literally just finished, tested it around the neighborhood and fiddling with lever adj, air pressure and any loose items. Breaking it in tomorrow.

    Alright, so after much deliberating with myself and feedback from a few of you(thanks guys!), I went for the Marz 66. Just installed the fork today, so nothing but a parking lot test so far. Tomorrow it will get some breaking in and I can't wait!

    Slight change to the suspension for me. Marzocchi 888 RC3 EVO fork and Cane Creek DBAir. This setup feels really, really good, but not finished tweaking yet. Weights 35.5 lbs on the nose.

    So Gretch, since you've used so many different forks on the Uzzi, give us some experiences...

    I currently have a 170mm coil Lyric but play with the idea of something bigger... Totems are a lot (40%) cheaper then foxes here, but sometimes I see boxxers for even cheaper.

    But I do spend most of my time on trails.

    Well, I've tried a Totem, Fox 180 and Marzocchi 888 RC3 EVO to date.... the Totem and Fox 180 were mainly used for AM type stuff and the occasional shuttle, so pedalling was at a premium as was turning radius... I give the nod to the Fox because it is so much lighter and felt pretty plush and controlled when setup correctly. The switch to the 888 was due to the fact that I was mainly using the Uzzi for shuttling and wanted something with a bit more stiffness, hence the dual crown and direct mount stem. The 888 is bar none the plushest, most responsive fork I have ever had the pleasure to own. It just sucks up everything. The similarities in axle-2-crown height between the Fox 180 and 888 made the transition seamless as you don't really notice a change in the geometry (which is minimal), so that was good. The bike gained 2 lbs overall, but I think the gain in stiffness was worth it.

    Basically, I wanted the Uzzi to be a dedicated mini-DH shuttle/park bike and my Tracer will fill the void for trail/AM riding.

    Gretch, what length Thomson seatpost are you running? I wanna switch out my Kind Shock Supernatural 385mm for either a 367mm or 410mm Thomson Elite. I'm trying to figure out if the 410mm will be too long.

    Measure visible seatpost. Add minimum insertion length. Add little to be sure. Round up to next available length...

    any of you guys with a medium uzzi vp and 180mm travel single crown fork, can you please give a wheelbase dimension (measured)? I'm trying to decide between a M & L, and crunching the numbers compared to my old uzzi vpx, it doesn't add up. Someone please measure!

    I decided to make my Uzzi a little less country and a little more rock'n'roll. 34.9lbs, 65 degree ha. It did raise the bb a bit though, sitting right around 14" in the slack/long setting. I still have some fine tuning to do and hit the trail with it.

    I've installed one on my Uzzi few weeks ago, and it worked surprisingly well, but still with some issues:
    - I had to file some material off - but only 2-3 mm of a narrow plastic corner, so it took just few minutes and for sure didn't compromise structural strenght. The "modification" is also merely visible, so probably you will not have any guarantee problems as well.
    - the angle of the chain device is not perfect, it has to be rotated little further counter-clockwise to clear the lower VPP link, and also device must me set in "wide" position (refer to E.13 manul to see what I mean). It looks like this and this is maximum that you will get without any *major* modifications:




    But what is good though, is that it works! And that is definitely not obvious with this frame... It's rather quiet (especially with self-adhesive velcro padding inside the upper cage) and the chain stays put all the time. The spacing/chain line is also quite well, so generally I can reccomend it for Uzzi VP.

    Thanks man. Just read some reviews and many people just complain E13's quality production as very, very bad. But about MRP G2 mini as well. So I'm little confused wich one get. Intense recommend MRP or Straitline but I prefer one without bash ring. Big plus for E13 and MRP is chance to laborate with size of chainrings (in my opinion from 32T to 36T because that will by my firs 1x10 set-up), with Silent Guide is only two opinion - 32T only or 34-36T, but with no any problem with VPP! And now make decision!

    I have had 4 rides on my bike. Last night haveway down a hill I heard a hellava noise from my chain but managed to get to the bottom without peddling. The lower roller case and upper guide were both smashed off? I didn't hit any rocks or fall off, so can only think the chain bunched or skipped and caused it to pass through the guide and take off all the plastic bits. Total rubbish.

    For relatively heavy, hard-hitting bike like Uzzi, I think 32T is the one to go for. I use myself with 1x9 (11-34 in the rear) and I whink that 11-36 casette would give perfect gear range for enduro riding with Uzzi. If you don't do any uphills, you could go with 34-36T, but if you use your bike for all mountain riding, 32T will be best IMO.

    On my Uzzi I tried the E13 SRS+, Straitline silent guide and the MRP Mini G2 SL... the only one which had a fit optimized for the Intense VPP system was the MRP... the others are compromises and the Straitline was just crappy on my Uzzi... not sure why, as I am sure others have had better luck, but I would recommend the MRP.

    Just bought an L size but probably I need to move with a M size.
    Is there any good guy who could measure the wheelbase of the M size with a totem 180mm and the G3 dropout in the longer position?
    Just to be sure for getting an other uzzi with the same feel that I discovered with this L size and the dropout in the middle, you what I mean.

    When I bought my Uzzi a few months ago Fanatik Bike put a 500# spring on based on my 200# riding weight. It feel great to me, but I'm used to a HT so it's like a LazyBoy at this point.

    Been great looking through everyone's picks. I was tempted to put a picture of my Socom in as, you know, it's half an Uzzi O_o.
    But I cna't believe some of the weights people are getting - 35lbs!? Mine is a fairly light build, ti spring, Flows, Currently has trail tyres on it, the finishing kit isn't heavy, old boxxers might be meatier than some peoples, but it still tips in at over 37lbs. Is the Socom frame heavier than an Uzzi?

    Q2- I am about 105 Kg and 5' 10" tall, I run 500 ti spring on a Slope Style and 550 ti spring on the Uzzi.
    550 feels firm in the short travel position and felt really nice in the long travel position but found the resulting lower BB would catch stuff at full travel.
    Ran with Boxxer's in the long travel position and it felt quite stretched out so never tried the longer 3G dropout position.

    Sorry Emanuele,

    The offer of "more love" is never a bad thing but I am not with the bike now for a couple of days and to be frank with the titanium chain ring bolts in the dropout they tend to be a pain to swop around.

    Try seeing if there is some geo data somewhere giving wheel base lengths for the different G3 location and calc the difference from that.

    The G3 dropout holes are less than the diameter of a chainring bolt (M8) apart so I would estimate about 4-6 mm .

    Socom frame w/o shock should be 200-250 g lighter than the Uzzi.
