I just threw the new link on my old SS1. Betterer system IMO. Used the Santa Cruz torque specs but I don't want to assume they are correct before I take it out for a little abuse.

Edit: (to keep it on topic) I have another new link to throw on my M9 next.
I may have spoke too soon.

When I tested with my flex meter (grabbed the seat and wheel and pulled in opposite directions) it was WAY flexier than with the original link. Almost felt like it had play. I took the cone out and torqued the pivot bolt to about 90 In lb. That has the bike close to the flex I had with the original link.... maybe a little flexier....hard to tell with out a side by side comparison.

Is that too much preload on the bearings? Or can i go more?

So i'm curious to know how your M9 with the new bolts and bearings feels, does the rear end still move side to side as much as it did before? Also have you compared your updated M9 with one from the factory to see if they feel the same? Does a V10 have this much side to side movement? I really want to know if I put something in wrong or didn't torque it properly or if this movement is normal?
downplease, did you remedy this issue? Im wondering if the torque specs from Santa Cruz are off for the Intense link or if it was something else.

edit: just called Intense instead of beating around the bush and guessing
60 in/lbs for the pivot axle and 125 in/lbs for the cone bolt

Ha, sniped! I just did the same thing.

They also said you could apply a little more torque on the pivot axle that is preloading the bearing as long as it is not too notchy, and then check the torque once it beds in. Kinda like a headset. That is what I had already done to get the rear of the SS back to the original state of noodleness. I was hoping the new link would help it in the stiffness department but I don't notice any improvement, even with the shiny new stuff placebo effect. Oh well.

got new bearings and link installed finally. pressing them in straight was a bit of a PITA but i figured something out in the end.
of course after i put everything together, i find out that the new box link's shock mount is a hair bigger then the offset flip chip causing a bunch of play just as i fix one problem, another arises.
my shock also must has puked up some oil from the last ride too. fvck me

its hard to tell how much grease you need in the cavities so i just put a ton of Red Devil grease in there

edit: Intense is sending new off-set flip chips to see if that will solve the problem....crossing my fingers

heres some pics if anyone was interested

i used a 5mm nut driver to knock the bearings out

So is it just with the offset chips and fine with the 9 inch one? Mine is tight but I haven't tried the offset chip with it.

the centered flip chips are significantly worse.

Make sure your shock reducers are pressed in firmly. It may also help if you file them down slightly (to make sure the bolt is clamping the chips tightly in the link!).

theres nothing wrong with the reducers or bushings. you can see the flip chips moving around in the box link.
the shock is off to QBP now anyway since the seal head is leaking

I'm considering picking up a 2012 M9 some time in the near future but would like to know what the changes from 2011-2012 are to the frame. I am assuming that the linkage update is standard now. Also I am assuming it is still available with either the DHX RC4 (Kashima?) or the CCDB. Am I correct? Anything else I should know about?

yes the link update is now standard.
i prefer the rc4 over the ccdb. i dont like the the "low and higspeed"

Tools you need, easy Job. i make it all up side done...
need a 1/4 tube lube for refuel the bearings..
and the flip chip for 9.5inch work perfect in the new box link..

I have read that the MRP G2 is the only guide (outside of the SRAM guide which I don't know much about) that will fit the M9. I have an e13 LG1+ and would like to use it if possible. I have seen a few throughout the thread with LG1+ guides on but am wondering if there is anything I should know about installing them.

Using a SRS with e13 DH cranks and previously saint cranks, both fitted fine. Loads of pictures of M9s on pinkbike.com with all manner of guides if you want to check

And for what it's worth Im not a massive fan of the CCDB either. Order without a shock and get a BOS Stoy. I have one on my SS1, it's witchcraft.

zero issues with chain line with this setup on my small cassette. the SRS+ is spaced out with the thinner of the two spacers behind the back plate. on all my other DH bikes thats used RF cranks, ive used this setup....cant remember how my MRP were though.
RF certainly doesnt make setting up chain line easy by putting a stupid amount of loctite on the shell

It's interesting that Pinkbike wrote in their review about the compatibility of chainguides with the M9. I was just surfing around and ran into a picture of Chris Kovarik with an M9 (CRC build) and clearly there's an e13 LG1+ stocked. Now I just need a frame and I'm good to go.

I have a brand new M9 frame and a brand new e13 LG1+ 36-40t guide and the fit is not very good. I think the LG1+ guide's that people are mounting are either modified to fit, or they're using the smaller 32-36t guide. I'm probably going to return the LG1 and try to find an MRP/SRAM guide since they apparently fit better.

I had an LG1 and SRS+ before getting an MRP. To fit the E13's it took way more spacers to get them to clear the frame. With the MRP it was a much better fit. You can make the E13 work but the MRP does fit better.

I decided to exchange the LG1+ for the MRP G2SL, I've read that it bolts up without any hassle. I can't wait to finally ride this beast!

I cracked my SOCOM frame at Mammoth in August and I've been waiting on a replacement M9 for about 4 months. It finally came in last week, so stoked to have it, but so irritated at little things like the chainguide not fitting and the fact that it didn't come with an axle (and my LBS didn't have any). Just a few more days...

I'm planning on running a 38t guide ring so would obviously need a 36-40t guide to accompany it. My LG1+ would fit the bid but does anybody know what kind of modifications are we talking here? I really don't want to get a G2 if I don't have to.

I think you'd have to grind a bit of the back plate off where it crosses the seatstay on the swingarm. I didn't take any pictures when I was trying to mount it, but I'm sure you could get it to work with a bit of dremeling.

Here are a few shots I just took of my bike with the MRP G2SL. You can see the back of the MRP guide would hit the triangle if it were any larger. The e13 guide is taller and wider there, and I think rotated back more. I'm running 2 washers as spacers and the chainline looks pretty good. Hope that helps

Thank you very much. I think that helps a lot. I will have everything to put the bike together tomorrow (minus the frame and the shifter cable/housing) and I think that I will end up just waiting until I actually start the build. I have been told by Intense that it should work but might need to be spaced more.

My goal is to have everything ready to go so when the frame arrives in February I can build from start to finish in one shot. That said, if the e13 is too much trouble, I can get an MRP pretty quickly. Thanks again.

It wasn't on mine, but mine was a warranty replacement for a cracked SOCOM. I know that the new frame at my LBS included an axle. A buddy gave me a steel one he had lying around, but the M9 dropouts are really thick and the axle only engages a few threads per side so I'm not real confident running it like that.

    Some changes since last time:

    Ti spring from the classifieds
e13 cranks 170mm in the CRC sale
    Easton Havoc carbon bars
    SDG Ti Fly saddle (sale)
    ODI Troy Lee grips (sale)

I've a got Bos Stoy from the classifieds going on this weekend so no more CCDB. A great shock but a proper PITA.

How are your springs rates compared to the recommendations in the manual? I haven't had a chance to ride yet, but I'm curious. I'm about 230lbs and I'll be running a 500 or 550 lb spring per the CCDB table.

I can't complain but as it turns out my frame showed up about 2-3 weeks early and will be delivered to me Tuesday. I'll post pictures when I finish the build.

A large red M9 arrived at my place this afternoon. It is absolutely beautiful and I can say I am extremely impressed at the quality and workmanship of the frame. It is just about built up but I will post pictures after I get my brake lines replaced.

Thanks a bunch. The e13 fit very well without any problems or modifications. The upper guide is close to the rear triangle but doesn't touch at all. When I post pictures I'll post some of the spacing as well as the clearance.

is anyone running a double barrel air on their m9 yet. i am buying a m9 in 2 months and want to know if i should just get the bike with one on it since it is 150 bucks to upgrade in stead of getting it with the coil then going air later

Many are happy with the CCDB but I could not get along with it, Saying that, it might be perfect for you..? Take your time, do some research and look into your options. There are plenty out there.

I don't see it listed on their website. Do you have to talk to them to get the swap?

As promised, here are a few pictures of my 36-40t e13 LG1+ fitted to the M9 frame without modification. I have two thicker black washers sandwiching a thin brass spacer for a total spacing of about 5mm. I have it tilted forward and am about 3-4mm away from the linkage.

Thanks, I'll post pictures of the full build when I get the brake lines replaced probably (hopefully) next weekend. I've run both the MRP G2 and e13 LG1+ and think that they are just about equal products but I like the looks of the e13 better so I was very pleased when it fit. The fact that I didn't have to drop another $130 or so for the G2 SL wasn't too bad either...

Out with team Yellow, in with the red for 2012 and beyond. I slapped the Deemax on in preparation for the Formula One season. Guess who's team/manufacturer I'm rooting for..

Some sales guy (lol) at Intense has my only other Vivid Air but otherwise, it'd be on my bike.
Currently at 39lbs right now and hella fun to throw around .

after several rides on the DB Air, i have to say that im really impressed with the shock. its on par, if not better then my coil DB. i am having to run the shock in the lowest progression setting but its been taking all the abuse ive been throwing at it.

I don't know if I can call it big, but you can note it definetely.
The bike, especially on rough and hard tracks, is more reactive; if you got used to pump it before the obstacle, it's better a lot.

It depends on you, but, for my likes I prefer it less linear and more progressive (.. reactiveness helps!)

Have a good time with this bike, it's sooo...good

The down tube protection is the same downtube protection used on the Carbine -just slightly cutout to fit.
(Jeff, better stock up and create a SKU to sell this stuff).
I thought it was a neat novelty to have as a first line of defense for the highly battered spot of the frame.

I really like my Dorado...so far. It's all just a matter of how reliable it's going to be from this point forward. So far, I LIKE it and two of the guys in our team have switched as well after taking my Dorado for a run or two.

    .
LizardSkins makes a "Carbon Leather" version that feels pretty tough and fits perfect on the M9 with just a couple tiny notches for the cable stays.

@ 8664, I am pretty sure Intense has always used the same head tube length for medium and large M9s. That goes for most of their frames with full 1.5" head tubes.
