    Carbine - what cranks?

So I picked up my new Carbine today. Started building it and discovered that I have a little problem.... my M970 XTR cranks do not fit. I'm going to need to get the inner ring ground down. My question is - is this the only crank that does not fit? I was planning to put a full M980 group on. Will the M980 triple fit?

Yep. I've got the XTR triple on my Carbine 27.5. It works well except that it doesn't like to be cross chained at all. Big/big and big/second to big are no no's on my medium frame. Also the 2.35 Hans Dampfs are really tight on the back. I'm going to order some of the 2.25's.

You have the M980 triple? The inner chainring clears the BB shell?

    Correct...view my build thread:
    Carbine 275 Flo Green

The only issues that I have are both due to the short chain stays:

Tire clearance is very tight when running the Hans Dampf SS 2.35 x 650B
Cross chaining when in big/big and big/next to big.
    Similar when in small/small

    I run an 11x36 cassette...

    Best of luck...

    Carbine - what cranks?

From my experience its only the m970 stock small ring. XT 760 and slx cranks / stock rings didn't have this issue. The blackspire 970 specific 22t will clear the bb shell with no mods, but its a very close fit. I decided to just ditch the little ring and run 1x10. The bike can be built so light even as an AM build, you should give it a shot. The FD is the work of the devil I wish shimano would release 11 Spd xtr and xt already.

FYI, I run SRAM XO 36/22 cranks on my Carbine 275 and have no issues with cross chaining big to big. Little to little leaves a very slack chain but it still pedals fine, though I never run little little. I even run an XT FR and RR and XT cassette with a KMC gold chain.

I got my 22 back from the machine shop yesterday. It fits now, but I do have a tiny bit of rub between the chain and the lower pivot cap. I'm wondering if that needs to be there...

There's rubbing when you're in little front / big rear gears? The caps "should" be there since they keep crap out of the bolts. Your chain will grind the cap off and ultimately the link. You ought to consider spacing your drive-side bottom bracket out 2mm. I had to do the same thing on my Carbine.
