What do you like for a front XC tire? The new Ground Control or The Captain . It seems the new Ground control is lighter and has less RR (in lab tests) but does it stick as well when things dry out in the foothills. I have only ridden a Eskar 2.3 in the Specialized line and I love that tire.

I think I have the captain, it's good. not as dry here as boise, but it hooked up well since I bought it. I replaced a nobby nic and wouldn't go that route again. the specialized is more substantial- better sturdy than light in the rocks.

You can do much, MUCH better than Specialized tires.

Or anything for that matter. Except maybe shoes. And gloves.

Specialized tires are great, and they have a good guarantee where you can bring them back no questions asked within 30 days of buying them. For XC, smooth path riding, i'd take a look at the Ground Control for the front. For more rocky or technical downhill I'd try out the Purgatory Control, which is my go-to front tire. The Captain in the rear is great on most trails, but not so good braking in dusty and dry conditions (shouldn't be a problem for a while!). For dry summer conditions, I like either a smaller Purgatory in the rear or the Eskar2.

Ridden the Butcher for a season. Good tire. Hooks up well and durable. I don't think I was ever at a loss for traction.

For the money they are probably the best. Captain is a great rear tire, I go with the butcher up front. They seem to be fatter than others though so be aware of clearance.

I have spent a lot of time on many specialized tires. Chunder, Purgatory, captain, captain control, sworks captain, ground control, and many cross tires. My all around go to combo is the Purgatory front in front and either the captain or the ground control in the rear. Good for most anything I have encountered.

Not race rubber that sticks like glue, but good grip and easy tubeless setups and long lasting make them my tires of choice.
