Here's how you find out who your legislator is:

http://legislature.idaho.gov/who'smylegislator.htm

Contact your legislators here:

http://legislature.idaho.gov/howtocontactlegislators.htm

And then you tell them this:

- The bill/plate is purely revenue generating - there is no cost to the state at all - all programming costs are privately funded and all back end fees generated go to the state. There is NO financial downside to the state - all financial upside.

- the bill reduces IDPR's reliance on funding from the general fund - IDPR has agreed to slash $4.5 million from their budget, and this bill can only help the state.

- the plate is supported state-wide. Clubs, businesses and individuals from Sandpoint to Moscow to McCall to the Treasure Valley to the Wood River Valley to Stanley to Idaho Falls to Pocatello to Twin Falls and all points in between are in support.

- Trails - both existing and new - have a positive economic impact on the local community. People traveling intra- and interstate spend their cash in local establishments for food, lodging, suppiles, etc... This is a positive multiplier effect for Idaho businesses.

- Trails erode from natural phenonmenon and use and cost money to maintain. New trails can cost as much as $10,000 per mile to build. Trail use may be free, but the trails themselves aren't free.

- Most of all - YOU are a voter - YOU support this idea and the printing and passage of the bill! The Legislature works for YOU!!

Get to work!

Does mounting this plate on your vehicle mean you are a stoner mountain biker and the law officers should search your vehicle? Does mounting this plate tell stoner juveniles that you have weed in your vehicle diddy box and they should break in and steal it? Probably better to just give to SWIMBA and avoid getting this good looking license plate.

I received an email from Rep. Brian Cronin last night. He's pretty confident that we have the votes to get the RS printed in the House Transportation Committee. More importantly, he has asked that we now hold off on the email/letter/call barrage to the Legislature until further notice. SO, if you HAVEN'T contacted your legislators yet, hold off for now.

This is a positive development. Given the legislature's general bias against special plates and some angst about IDPR, getting print hearing is good. We should congratulate both Brian and our "man on the ground" at the legislature, John Mackey.

I will let you all know when we have a bill number.

Only if you're driving a VW Bus or if you have a color coodinated 70's fixie conversion on a rack.

This idea has been rattling around in my head for some time. To be sure I think that it must be done in the near future, because I think that the state does not want to do this type of plate and this door will be closed.
You are exactly correct. There is a growing cadre of legislators who vote against special plate legislation of any kind now, regardless of the plate or the cause. There was a bill run in the Senate at the end of last year that would, for all intents and purposes, kill the program. The key with the bike/trails plate is that it's totally privately funded on the front end (ITD's programming costs of $3K to $10K), but the fees generated on the back end go to IDPR (and then through grants to trail organizations.)

Hopefully, the fact that this is a purely revenue generating bill for a department who is supposed to be self-funded in the future will overcome general sentiment against special plates.

We're on About.com: http://mountainbike.about.com/b/200...ide-mountain-biker-requests-special-plate.htm

Rideit also gave me a contact in the Teton Valley and it looks like we'll get more of the state covered with support!

Best news - we should be on the agenda on Thursday for a print hearing before the House Transportation committee. We should have enough votes to get the RS printed and get a bill number. Getting there, one step (or pedal stroke) at a time.
