Homestake, CDT, Beaver Pond conditions (updated as of 5/11)

Has anyone been out on Homestake Pass? Conditions?

I've been riding L&C, but assume Pipestone is good to go.

Also I know p-stone is a maze of atv/moto trails so was wondering if anyone had any "new" routes to explore.

For example I was looking to the North at Delmore Park area to make a longer ride

I've mostly done the singletrack climb to the right of the road and then picked up the singletrack past the spire rocks which follows along side the railroad tracks and back to the car.

Have you ever rode the divide trail on the west side of I-90? It is most excellent but I'm not sure if it's snow free yet. I guessing that conditions should rapidly improve with the high temps coming up .............

So buddy and I got out on Saturday to ride Beaver Pond, and conditions were perfect.

Just 2 small muddy spots on the lower reroute section.

Given the dryness, I suspect the CDT ride from 90 @ Homestake Pass is also good to go...

Also noticed that there's another option to ride to Butte from the BP trail, anyone ride that, suggestions re: routing?

    Hi MR-

I don't recall if that trail has been newly named or not, it was formerly called Zelda's forest. It will take you down to the Homestake Meadows area. You can either take that to the Homestake Meadows trailhead or take the Skeboggan trail through the archery range, cross Hwy 2 and connect with the Thompson Park trails. From there take the RR bed back to Pipestone Pass or explore the Thompson Park trails before taking RR bed back up. Or if you are really adventurous you can continue on the Butte 50/100 course. All of course are fun trails.

    Hope that helps a little,
    S

    Thanks for the info, Snack.

I found the Thomson Park pdf online, looks like Zelda's forest is 4800, and assume you're referencing hooking back to 4805 & then RR bed?

Yup. FS has the trails both named and numbered. Last I heard most trees had been cleared. You never know what recent winds do though.

There are a couple tunnels on the RR bed return to navigate but are not a big deal.

    Pipestone / Homestake conditions?

March '14: anyone have any recent info on conditions at Pipestone or L&C Caverns? Helena is still covered in 6" of slush.

    Pipestone / Homestake conditions?

I'll answer my own question, in case anyone is wondering. Some friends went to the Caverns today. They just did a couple out-and-backs on the first climb. Still wet and snowy higher up. One told me he's been skiing at Homestake a bunch, and didn't see any point in trying Pipestone.

It was warm here in Helena, but we're still weeks away.

Thanks for the update. Keep them coming as I'm looking forward to heading over for some dirt. We've got serious slush in Missoula, as least in the Rattlesnake. On Saturday, even fatbikes with 4.7s and 5 psi were no match for the slush.

    Pipestone / Homestake conditions?

It's still a mess here. When things open up, I'll start posting condition reports. The Garage website and Bike Helena will have updates too, but may not be as regular. Hopefully I'll find some dry trail on the E side of Mount Helena in a week or so, where it's well-drained limestone rubble.
