    Halstead Fire/Stanley area trail info?

    Hi all,

I'm currently in Sun Valley and will hit up an LBS for info but I was wondering if anyone had any recent ride reports from this weekend? From the closure map it looks like the Knapp Creek loop is out but if anyone hit the Potato Mtn/Basin Creek loop how smokey was it?

I was also mulling over the Wyoming Creek ride to Bull Trout Lake but that's pretty close to the fire as well, albeit to the west so hopefully upwind. Also, I've never done the Warm Springs Creek trail down to the Bonneville Hot Springs and that may be a better option for smoke as well as a great place for wifey and the kids to hang out while I selfishly ride my bike

Or, I could just stay south of Stanley and do an Ant's Basin to Warm Springs Meadow and come out Williams while the kids hike to the 4th of July Lake. Curious about the deadfall down to Warm Spngs Meadow. As I've found out on Little Casino that can be quite a beat down not getting the word on whether it's been cleared.

Thanks for any info. I'll be sure to return the same for anyone who cares to venture south to Flagstaff or Sedona

Information, maps, closures, on the Halstead Fire can be found here. InciWeb the Incident Information System: Halstead Last report I read, there were lots of trees down on Warm Springs Creek coming out the bottom. Probably going to be pretty smoky, east and north of Cape Horn and the fire for a while. Weather forcast for next few days is for southwest or west winds. Looks like on the ITD Smiley Creek webcam the fire is putting up a good column again this afternoon as has been the case. Hope you find a good smoke free ride.

I do know that the Warm Spr. trail to Bonneville has been cleared of downed trees, but do not know for sure about closures. From reports of the fire I would think it would be open?

The Warm Springs Creek I was referring to is the one east of Stanley, not the one to Bonneville Hot Springs. Sorry if I messed you up. Let us know where you rode, and how it was.

Roger. Heading up on Wed. I wasn't able to get much info at Backwoods or Elephant Perch. It does sound like the trees have been cleared from Ant's Basin down to Warm Springs Meadow. It's the lower end toward's Robinson Bar that's got lots of deadfall.

Either way, there's so much good riding up there I should be able to skirt the smoke. Thanks for the help and I'll report back.

We were the last ones out of potato mtn trailhead on Saturday before they closed the area. No smoke at that time and we were surprised they even closed it, must have gotten bad. Seemed areas around bull trout were okay but wasn't sure.

you never know until you go

Pretty smoky in the Wood River Valley when I left yesterday morning. The view of the Sawtooths from Galena was even worse. It got better in the White Clouds

Got a bit of a reprieve wed and thurs but the smoke was back with a vengeance thurs afternoon. Back in SV to find hwy 21 closed by the Bench Fire and Bull Trout Campground is being evacuated. Glad we didn't go up there. Time to head back south to AZ where strangely enough it's been a low-key fire season. Thanks for all the info
