Barneys vs. Goatheads - Tuesday 08/25/09

A message from CBro - King of the Barneys:

This Tuesday night, we’re going to have a trail-work night. It’s always more fun than it sounds, and it not only is good for the trails, but it is good for you, too! It will give you bragging rights to use against your slacking friends who only ride the trails, but never pause to give back a little. Let’s meet in the SE corner of the parking lot like we used to before we started going up the hill to ride. Meet at 5:45 PM.

We’ll be breaking into teams of 2 or 3 and pulling goathead plants out of the Military Reserve trails. So here’s what you ought to bring: heavy gloves, something to dig goathead plants out with; and something to take them to the dumpster in, such as a plastic garbage can or heavy duty bag.

I’ve been out a few times, and use a wagon with a plastic garbage can, and a device called “the Claw.” It’s a slow, tedious, zen-like labor of love.

We’ll work for an hour, maybe more, then convene in typical Barney® style for a better than usual BBQ and refreshment time. And we’ll feel like we earned it for a change!

The ground is fairly hard, so be prepared to work a little.

ugh another conflicting plan; I can't make it. These work pretty well. Something fairly small is better as you need to get between the tentacles on the weeds to pry or cut the tap root. The seeds are already pretty mature so it is best if you disturb minimally so the seeds stay on the vines.

Any biologists in the group? I'd love to try these: but they are really expensive ($75/acre) and it sounds like they don't winter in our climate. It would be cool if the city or BSU or somewhere could develop a crop of these wintered indoors. (I'll supply a good supply of starter food )
Oh sh!+ just force upgraded to cat1. Now what?
Best thing about an ultra marathon? I just get to ride my bike for X hours!
