I have a HD 160 and am considering sending my Fox RP23 and Talas 36 FIT RLC to get rebuilt and tuned. I have read some good reviews, but give me some good reasons to spend the money and lose riding time while this is being done. I am looking to get the best performance I can without replacing everything to a coil. I mostly ride South Mountain chunk aggressively. If you have ridden trails such as National, Geronimo, and Holbert you know what I am looking for in performance. Super rocky, hard, chunky goodness.
Hit up Kevin or Mike at Suspension Experts Home Page. Great guys. They are less expensive and IMO their work is better. In my experience, they are very customer service oriented. They want it to be right! Tell them Ashley sent ya.
I have had very good experience with Push. They have tuned several RP3/23 on my bikes and my wife's, one Fox 36 TALAS RC2, and a Monarch RT-AM. With all tuning services, the more you are able to articulate what you are expecting to achieve with the custom tune, the better the results.
For Fox RP23, Push has developed their own piston valve, which increases overall oil flow and allows them to have a broader tuning range to meet your requirements. This is where I feel their service shines. Don't discount the possibility of selling the RP23 and buying one of their Monarch RT-AM (which would end up financially in a wash), or you could splurge for a RT3 if you really want to maximize DH performance. I have been using a Monarch RT-AM for a year on a Banshee Spitfire and that shock is worlds better than a stock RP23 before in DH performance and pedaling (especially over square edges, which you have tons of in your terrain).
For the fork, the can tune it a bit but there isn't a whole lot they can play with there (especially on the RLC damper) and any good quality tuner will be able to achieve similar results.
You are lucky to have South Mountain in your backyard! Phoenix and Sedona have some of my favorite riding in the US. I was in Sedona for a week of riding just last November and I wanted to cry when I had to head back home.
I've had 2 PUSH rp23's. I didn't like either of them. I tell push what I want, they make it wallow, blow through travel, and generally suck at life. Some people love what they do to a shock though and the monarch with a push sounds like everyone loves it.
Did you talk to them after you rode the shocks? There may be setup issues, or they didn't understand the tune you were after, or the RP23 is just a bad match for your frame and riding and no tune is really going to make up for that. It's not rocket science or magic: all they can do is change the way the oil flows and alter the spring curve a little bit by putting in bottom out bumpers.
I had one DHX5 tuned by Push with their MX tune for a DH bike and the rear end of the bike still had too much wallow and not enough control through the chop. I called them and after giving specific feedback they understood they I was after a firmer ride that favors control over comfort, while usually their customers are after "plush". I sent the shock back, they gave it more of a race tune and sent it back to me. Second time around it was spot on for me and my bike.
I had the rp23 on my Mojo SL PUSH'd and I've liked the tune. I gave them a *very* detailed description of the riding I do, my style of riding and what I wanted in the feel.
This was followed up with a phone call and I was impressed with their thoroughness and the quick turn around.
In general, the PUSH tune has made me love my Mojo even more.
Very pleased with my pushed Rp23.Fits my personal style perfect!!
