Lopes and Ibis Part Ways. Come again?

Looks like Lopes and Ibis have parted ways. Sounds like it was mutual but didn't see that one coming.

Ibis site has a photo of Lopes charging through what looks like an EWS finish and links to this page with an awesome array of Lopes photos and videos:

Moving On | News | Info | Ibis Cycles US

"Our time working with Brian was filled with thrills, victories and lasting memories - from an unprecedented string of victories on Whistler's A-Line to the first World Cup victory in the XC Eliminator in Houffalize. We'd like to thank Brian for all he contributed to the ongoing Ibis story and wish him the best in his future endeavours." - Scott Nicol, Ibis

I wouldn't be surprised to see him move into MX, since the team development that he's been doing lately seems to have been quite successful. MX has to be more lucrative than the bike industry, and as a 40+ year old dad, I expect the demands of being a sponsored MTB rider -- travel, for one thing! -- for the long term just doesn't make sense. I'm sure we'll still see him racing: just perhaps not as much as in the past. It's been fun to watch what he's done with Ibis I must say, and too bad to see it come to a close.

Also fun to speculate who will replace him on the Ibis roster!

Interesting idea. And if he's affiliated with an MX team, don't they usually have an MTB sponsor, so he'd just be on that brand?

The issue is that while he's one of the greatest mountain bikers of all time, what evidence do we have that he'd be competitive in MX?

Not racing, but coaching. He's already coaching pro riders like Cole Seely.

I'm more curious to know who Ibis will bring in to replace him... They have ACC racing Enduro... will they sponsor another enduro racer, or sponsor a rider from another discipline? I think it will be indicative of where their development strategy is going.
continuous growth is the strategy of a cancer cell.

BL was seen having lunch with Hans Rey (GT rider), not sure the relation is.
Ibis certainly need a good rider to replace BL. Maybe Custis Keene?

I'll second Lapierre as a likely option given how involved Joe Binatena at Lopes' Shop BikeCo is with their product development. I'd say a dark horse would also be BMC. BikeCo is getting more involved in that brand and they've brought on some serious talent in the past few years (Julian Absalon for XC, strong road team, and Aaron Bradford for Enduro).

If he keeps racing would he stick with X-Fusion or help Lapierre with their EI tech. Interesting to see how it shakes out.

Hmmm interesting, how about throwing Intense in there? If BriLo is looking for a future after racing it might be possible that he go work for a Socal company and one with pretty big changes going on such as Intense...

Anyway good luck Brian, I rode with him the day before the WC in Dalby Forest 3 years ago, nice guy and amazing to see him cut trails like nobody else!

send jeff to world enduros (not just two US ones) and then use rest of budget to release an all new 650 trail slayer like we all want. People don't know this but Jeff is one of the fastest guys in California.

Probably got more money and less racing priorities, win/win. Doubt he cares too much about the bikes, most bikes are good these days and he can do good on pretty much anything, and if hes only casually racing here n there its even less of a priority. MOB (money over bikes) lol

Yeah, and I've been assuming that he'd be wanting to dial back the racing....aside from simply getting older, having a kid REALLY reshuffles the priorities. Also, I wonder how happy Ibis REALLY was with the number of events he raced last year, and where he placed in them. The Mojo HD's top spot as "Enduro Bike of Choice" is under serious threat from the new wave of awesome looking 6" bikes, mostly 650b.

I read somewhere that they wanted him racing more and he wanted to work more on development etc, so I think you are dead on. I also still think there was a fundamental disagreement on what he should be racing as well. Somehow I doubt he would have shown up at the EWS Whistler event with a Ripley by choice. He knows that place inside and out and what to expect.

Personally I think Ibis did themselves a huge disservice by not sending an HDR with XX1, Enve Wheels, and a CCDB vs. the modest build they tested.

Agreed. I can't believe how many $10k+ builds being reviewed, and the editors still rave about them...

It's nice to test out a bike that has all the tricked out parts, but when it comes down to it, you can't hide the true characteristics of the bike with any build kit.

Anyway, if you had your chance, wouldn't you jump on the $10k setup as opposed to a cheaper one?

Out riding in Dana Point with a Full Face and goggles so no one would recognize him while they were shooting this.

I know that road gap and it is not small!

On a side note, notice the Wolf Tooth chain ring...he must not agree with the direction that shimano is going with the new 1x..,just sayin!

    Lopes who!

Right Lopes is history, time to look forward and where if Ibis is recruiting someone younger with knowledge skills and ability from a US based rider to step up on the EWS and US scene ideally on a new 160mm 27.5 ripper, dw , non Ripley style creaky linkage and take the brand to the next level.

At mo probably be playing catch up in that area.

Also be good to hear if any Euros, Aussies, Kiwis maybe being looked at for non US riders who don't mind leaving home and travelling on an oily rag and nailing results aka Jamie Nicol though hes gone riding the Polygon factory Enduro rig.

Be good to hear if AC is fit healthy ready as is the Lifecycles team.

Ideally this year stick go the one bike tune setups to conditions but learn from JC and JG in terms of results comes from knowing yr equipment with the varying battle conditions from location to location.

Can't wait, bring me a bowl of Chilli for Chille, Braap!

Ps: Thanks to BL for helping develop and bringing the awesome HD to life..

It's built off the fire road that climbs left off of Los Rambles "Trail" above the Mansion Jumps. I drew it into the photos below:

It would be way more interesting to see bike tests with a price range instead of category. For example a test of $4K bikes with 140-160mm of travel. A test of XC rigs at the $6K price point with 100-120m of travel. On the high end I would like to see a test of frames with identical builds. This would take all of the personal preference out of the equation and put the focus on the frame which to be honest is what we really care about at that price point.

    This^^^^

Way more interesting, and also more fair to the mfr's and useful to the readers. It's just dumb to compare bikes with a 50 - 100% variance in price. If I were the mfr being asked to send a bike for testing, I would either send the uber high end wonder bike, or demand that the test be conducted only against bikes in the same price range.

When a $10k bike wins a shootout, all I can say is "Duh", and I'm left still wondering if the half-priced bikes it went up against wouldn't be ranked higher if they were equipped fairly.
