The HD was available with 135? Did you mean Mojo and Mojo SL?
Yes, the HD started with a 135 rear axle. That was changed for bikes shipped after some time summer 2011. Along with other updates like the direct mount front derailleur and the extra tire clearance space at the seat post.

Here comes the dumb question - would an existing shadow plus be usable in this setup (is the b link removable?) or does this require the purchase of a new one?

From what I have read on bike rumor you will need to buy a new mech as the spacing and bolt are tweaked:
Will Ibis offer a DM mount that accomidates the smaller bolt and different width so an existing Shadow can be DM*? I guess this is really aimed at Hans.
*That article said this would be up to each frame company.
**Problem solvers could also do this.
***It would suck if Shimano keeps this "standard" proprietary, rather than let it become the new adopted standard like BB92, which they developed.

I'm not a rep but from a business standpoint that wouldn't make much sense. You'd have to retool the machines that manufacture the hangar for a derailleur that was only in production for ~1 year. Even more since it already came with an adapter to fit the standard hanger. Just my thoughts.

Sorry for the possible stupid question but will this retrofit to a Mojo SL? (I doubt it but thought I'd ask anyway) I'm about to buy a new rear mech (xtr shadow +) but I'm thinking I should wait for a DRD version (if it can fit my bike?)

I found the answer to my own question... the frame needs to be able to accept the DRD so no retro fit to the classic or SL.
I just purchased an HD from The Bike Company in Irvine, CA & they had to directly order up the frame from Ibis. When the frame came it still had the traditional rear derailer mount. They said Ibis was still testing this possible feature.
bump. wondering if and when a direct mount rear derailleur will be available for the HD. I'm now converting to 10sp. (Zee) and also need a couple of new hangers. I figured it would be a good time to get the "newer" hangers if they are available.
