    Carbon Fibre Rock Guard

    Anyone had one of these?

MTB Carbon Fibre Rock Guard IBIS MOJO SL ROCKGUARDZ | eBay

Is the fit OK, i.e. it doesn't flap about.

my frameskin on the down tube is looking very tired now and this may be an alternative. (it has lasted 2.5 years of abuse very well)

I've seen those too and thought they just looked like a carbon reproduction of the hd downtube cover...which works great!

    Seems to do the job.

    Thin, lightweight and fits OK.

Finish could be better but not bad for 30.

I think one of these would work ok if you are just worried about paint chips.

I think one reason why Ibis and other bike manufacturers use a softer material such as plastics or leather type materials is because it absorbs more of the energy from a hard impact. If a thin piece of carbon (and also depending on matrix material) and gets hit hard, it will easily crack and continue on through to your frame. Softer (yet durable) materials will elastically and/or plastically deform and absorb much more energy.

I have to admit that the carbon one looks pretty nice though.

I use Crankskins clear film on the downtube of my
carbon frames. These work great and do a good
job. The thing I don't like about the Rock Guard is
they can trap mud, dirt, and debris between the
    guard and downtube.

    Best, John

just got one today.. i agree with what is said above. i covered the area with helicopter tape first so it dont rub the frame finish.
will put some pics in the SL build thread in a day or so when i complete the build. got a few things i wanna change first

I was thinking of using a product called plasti dip its a rubber like compound that you can spray out of a can, I have used this on my cars and has worked great the best thing about this is that when you dont want it anymore it peels right off or if you mess up you can start all over again the only concern is using it on the matte carbon fiber frame.

That 'could' be something lodged underneath it and creaking the guard or frame?

I put a roll of this stuff all along the downtube & under my rockguardz - its quite thick so it will add a decent amount of impact absorption.
