Zone 66 VF and Pig Headset fitment issue

Do I need to leave on the little snap ring that's on my steer tube or take it off? I've tried it with and without and I've yet to get the headset to mate to my fork successfully. The big silver bearing ring that came with the headset won't slide all the way down on my forks steer stem. I really thought I knew more about bikes than this. Help...please. Didn't Todd run a 66 on his zone?

    Back to square 1

OK, if the "snap ring" you talk about is part of the original headset configuration-remove it. The only parts you should be using is the parts for the Pig headset you're using as a replacement. As for the crown race (I hope this is what you're talking about when you describe it as "The big silver bearing ring") not fitting all the way down to your fork's crown, it has to be forced into place with a special tool, or a piece of PVC pipe and a hammer.

I hope I'm understanding your dilemma correctly, and giving you the right advice. It's the best I can do given how you're describing the problem. If you're still flummoxed, take it to the LBS.

I thought about the PVC solution but didn't want to make a square peg fit a round hole. If you know what I mean. The "snap ring" is part of my old headset configuration (I guess). So I'll slam down the crown race and be done. Thanks Clyde.

The steerer tube on the fork is a slightly larger diameter as it meets the crown so that the crown race fits snugly in place when installed. You don't want the race spinning, that's the job of the bearings that ride on it! Tap it down with the PVC pipe and it will set just fine. I've done this several times myself.

Definitely don't use that old snap ring. As mentioned, use only the parts from the new headset.

Let us kno how you make out!

If the crown race isnt installed all the way it will work it's way down while your riding in rough terrain and cause havoc Not good, it's a fast way to fry the bearings..Been-there-done-that about 5 miles out

Pig races tend to run oversize so it may take some effort to install them.

yea, the pig headsets are pretty tough to work with.

I did used to run a 170mm 66VF on my zone. I would HIGHLY recommend getting it lowered to 150mm if it isnt there already. With 2005 marzocchi forks, take the actual amount of travel EV 170mm then add 30mm for the obnoxious AC height. so your 170mm 66 will be as long if not a bit longer than a 200mm 888 2006+ what you're trying to pry off is the crown race. if it wont come off easily take it too a bike shop and get it pulled off. while you're there get it pressed onto the new fork.

This was at 170mm the third pic you can see the 200mm of rake.

Mine is the 150mm version. I'd like to have 170mm of travel but can't afford a new fork right now and don't want to rake out the bike too much. Should be done with the build this week then I'll post some pictures.

cool ohh and btw, the 66VF can be raised to 170mm of travel. but like I said, it gets too tall.

MPo, waht do you have agaisnt Specialized so much?
They make a great bike, very high quality and their accessories are top notch also.
I still have three Speshies here, and one is 1998 and still going strong.
The only thing about Speshie I dont like, is their full face helmets, and their pricing on bikes is quite steep.
