Linga's asta / Linga's first XC race (sorry guys no porn)

    hey guys,

just did my first XC race on the ASTA. it was an impromptu decision. i found out about the prairie city flash fall series yesterday and was thinking about racing it. then my friend calls me and asked if i wanted to go. so i obliged.

so anyways ill start with by saying... the asta performed well. which was a victory in itself. although now i come to expect it. i kept the rubber side down. another victory in itself. but the most important victory of the night was my race. i got first in sport class. 18-29.

anyways, the race kicked off with us at the line. i got the wholeshot out of the parking lot into the descent. i took my time because i didnt wanna blow up too early. one guy sped ahead and i pretty much tailed him for 2 laps. i studied his moves and saw opportunities for me to pass. by the third lap my studying paid off. i passed him and threw the power down. another guy in my class passed me and i just stayed on him for the rest of the race. i did not realize he was in my class till i say his class number on his calf and i realized i had to make a move. and make a move i did

coming out of a climb i that i passed him again on, it flattens out into a short fire road then drops into a technical single track descent. on the fire road was a slower rider so i tailed that person until we reached the single track. right at the entrance of the single track i accelerated right passed her and bombed my way down. from there i was passing everyone in sight. next thing i know im making my way to the finish line solo with several minutes on the guy in second.

after the race the guy i made the move on said it paid off. glad to know it worked.

anyways, it was a fun day and the asta performed perfectly. i did wash out a ton but i learned to live with it and it is now a part of my riding... 2 wheel drifting. ill check the race's website to see if they post any pictures anytime soon.

    Linga,

I've noticed some drifting on the Asta when really pushing the limits of speed into the corners. The first time it happened, it scared the crap out of me. Looks like you got what you wanted out of that bike. First place always looks good to me.

    Congrats dude!!!!!
Maybe you need a different late summer tire.
If it's anything like where I'm at in the east bay, you might need something else for this time of year.
There is so much washout, the dirt is like powder. Crazy.
Look, whatever happens, don't fight the mountain.

Congrat's!!! Regarding the washout what air pressure are you running and are you tubeless?
If you're not falling, then you're not riding fast enough!

    thanks everyone!

im pretty sure its the tires that are washing me out. my friend use to have the same tires and he said they washed out a lot on him too. its also a general opinion on the wheels and tires thread that these tires wash a lot. it doesnt bug me all that much tho. ive learned to expect it and use it as a part of my riding.

baraant: i am tubeless and i am running about 30 psi F/R. youtube ghetto tubeless and you'll see my face.

Jake: i told you i'd podium this bike as much as i could. this is just the start. as for what we can do to fix the washing, im just gonna run these tires to the death and get some conti race kings. like ive been saying in previous threads.

Haha, no idea actually. SF is surprisingly tight knit. Everybody knows somebody else you know and so on...
Congrats though. I might race with Humboldt state next year.

Not even sure what classes there are in collegiate races to be honest.
But I'm car less, which means I usually lug my heavily built 5" bike everywhere by biking so endurance shouldn't be too much of a problem...That plus some much needed weeniefication on the bike and I'm set. Will say hi. I just saw Sam yesterday. So you know Joe Levi too? That was one of my high school friends. He's up in Humboldt as well. I guess that's enough internets name dropping for now. Small world..

not to sound cocky or anything but... i didnt train for this race to be honest. i guess my fitness comes from doing regular road rides with competitive roadies that brought my fitness up. i also noticed i became a lot stronger after the collegiate road season.

dog: say what you want about the above but there is no denying that road bikes is what helped me win this race.

    round 2

sorry if i sound a little brain dead. its been a long week with moving, midterms, and... moving.

round 2 was tonight. there were more people than last week which made it more fun.

preride: the course felt much better this week since i was able to dial in my suspension a bit better. the ride was much plusher and my body didnt take as bad as a beating. i was also use to the tires washing out and was able to play that to my advantage. it was looking to be a good day.

so anyways, the race kicked off with two classes at the line. we had two age groups of sport class start together. it was mine (18-29) and the 17 and under division. we shot off the line and wow can these kids sprint. i ended up tailing the fastest kid out the gate and we went for about half a lap. he eventually popped and i was able to make a move and get away from him. not too long after that i hit a bump and my seat kinked upwards. i thought "oh this is gonna be bad" and bad it sure was. the kinked seat caused TONS of lower back pain. almost immediately i felt myself losing power and my heart rate was jumping higher. the rest of the first lap was spent trying to fix my seat without having to get off but that was a failure. so i decided to suck it up and go for it the rest of the race.

the rest of the race was just PURE agony. my back started hurting more and more. as a result i could feel my legs not being able to put the power down since every pedal stroke killed my back a little more. im not one to complain on the bike but this was KILLING me.

as a result of my power lost i started getting passed left and right. all the people i passed on my initial sprint out, started passing me again. i was able to hold some people off but not too well. eventually i fell into my rhythm where i was able to find a compromise between putting the power down and taking the back pain. the rest of the race was just me pacing myself as fast as i could.

on the last lap i couldnt be happier to have a ride to be over with. i sprinted for the line. passed a few guys and got it. at the end of the race i had no idea what place i was in since i let so many guys pass me and get away.

i ran into the guy who got second last week and he said i lost him on some features. he ended up going over the bars but was still able to finish. i didnt really see anyone else from my race for the rest of the time.

eventually i made my way over the the table where results were being recorded and asked them what place i got. turns out i won again this week. i was surprised with myself. i guess i got far enough ahead that i was able to pace myself and solo for the win of my class. but i know for sure that a bunch of other guys in sport class passed me. so i did not get sport overall. but a win is a win and ill take it.

now my back is killing me. but ill live.

pretty much. hit a bump. then my @$$ tilted the seat up. i gotta tighten that bolt.

im deciding on whether or not i should bump it up a category. the jump from sport to expert in this series seems pretty big. plus they do an extra lap. i can also just finish the series in sport and upgrade for another series. this is also a flash fall series so there's less people in attendance.
