Thanks for the offer gmats. As much as I would like to, I will take a pass on this one. I'm still taking this time to brush up on my running. I know that once I get my bike back I will totally forget about running again. lol.

It's kind of funny, even though both activities are mostly legs and core, and use pretty much the same muscles, they're used in such a different way that it's almost like they're completely different muscles.

If anyone else shows up, I plan to drive the week whacker into the trail in my truck, and you guys can ride your bikes to the trail. That way no one can mess with your bikes while we cutting grass. Looks like we can start with either Cubby's Corner or the Mall (fast but slow).
Is that Kulani or something else?

Just a heads up, Kulani is in rare form this weekend. Minimal moisture on the ground, no mud, no down trees on the trails. I did the the whole trail this morning in 1 hr. 26 min. on my hardtail.

    Hello, hello

Gmats pointed me in this direction for information and I'm enjoying sifting through it.

I'm hoping to ride on the Kohala coast and was recommended that I check out Kalopa SP. Any other recommendations for the area? Back home on the central coast of California, I ride AM and what some call Freeride. Everyone's got their own vernacular, but I'd love to get a good taste of these trails.

Gmats is the man when it comes to riding Kalopa. You might want to make it over to Kona and check out Kaloko as well.

Aloha. I was pointed here by another rider. I am looking for places to ride on the Kona side. If there are any trails convenient to captain cook and Honaunau, that would be ideal.
It is awesome to see there is a good riding community.

    Aloha Renn,

I don't know of any riding down in the Captain Cook/Hoanaunau area. I'm sure there are trails, I just don't seem to make it down there to scope out trails. Best bet is to drop in on the guys down at Bikeworks Kona. They're super cool. I ride with them from time to time when they're up here in Waimea or or I'm down there with them.

I sometimes ride a bit north of you up in Kaloko. Some great, technical steep up and down single track stuff.

    Good luck with that.

BAAAAMMM!!! where's everybody? the sun is setting earlier nowadays so it's harder to ride the trails. I've been running and riding around my neighborhood this week because of the shorter days and rainy weather.

Well, we've reserved a couple HT 29ers from Kona Bike Works for this coming Saturday. Still thinking we'd like to ride the Mana Road loop. I would want to invite/organize etc. but just don't want to start something and flake out. It's a long ride, just need to research it more and make sure the man and I are up to it, especially if we're by ourselves and trying to navigate it.

That said, am going to be very interested in what peoples' ride plans are for Saturday, in case we want to just tag along on someone else's ride!

Also, anyone know of a Turkey Trot or 5K/10K happening on the Big Island on Thanksgiving? That would be fun. Hasn't Mazukea been doing a lot of running?

Yes there is a turkey trot on thanksgiving morning. But it will be on the east side at Hilo Bay. I can ask my other running friends if there is something in Kona. I'm sure there is. Kona is full of runners and health freaks. Lol.

I've been looking at the Mana Road route a little more closely. So I guess y'all ride it as a point-to-point, start in Kamuela, ride up? 45 miles or so?

Seems like it would be amazing if we could hire a van or car with bike racks to drive us to the top, enabling us to just ride our bikes down Mana Road. Has anyone ever tried doing that?

Really appreciate the advice guys. Thanks so much!

Aloha, we usually shuttle to the top and ride down. I'm not totally sure yet but I might be able to shuttle you guys to the top. 60/40 I think I could do the shuttle for you. I'm about 30/70 I "might" be able to ride. I would love to but I am not sure of the plans with the GF and if I can go for such a long ride (yet).

No worries, I didn't get to ride today (yesterday). Hit some golf balls into the holes (and other places), had two parties to attend. Brought some corn bread and haupia.........I managed to not eat too much. Tomorrow the riding begins again...............Love it!! Gonna hit up Mana Road with some touri.

Hey guys. So we had an absolutely memorable day on Mana Road Saturday. Thank you to gmats for hosting. I did a little write-up in my blog, I hope I don't sound too whiny about my rental bike. It was an incredible day, it was our favorite part of the whole trip.

Thanks to everyone who gave suggestions and advice on where to ride. Be sure to hit me up if you're ever in Nor Cal.

Ah, but you see, this was a win win. I got to meet new people, extend the riding family a bit more AND I got a super ride in.

Also, I'm just putting some back into the kitty. I've certainly taken from it over the years with all the great people who have shown me their trails through out the world.

Thanks for the kudos, much appreciated.

    Aloha!

I leave in the morning for a little over a week in Mauna Lani. Pretty excited. I was wondering if you guys could tell me if there's any mountain biking worth checking out near there. If there was a "must ride" trail within maybe an hour or so, I'd love to hear about it. Also, maybe places to rent a bike?

Depending on which direction you were headed, Mountain Road Cycles in Waimea/Kamuela or Bike Works in Kailua/Kona. If you choose Waimea, then head on to Kalopa State Park. If Kona, then Kaloko trail. I'm sure the people at the bike shops will point you in the right direction.

dfinn you got any rides in yet? Man you should've joined us at Kalopa today. The trail conditions were great. You found a rental bike?

Aikane - damn you were rockin on your singlespeed HT today. Can you make it any harder on yourself? lol.

Gmats - it was fun doing trail maintenance with you and aikane today. It felt good to give back to the trail.

Aikane and I finally conquered this rooty ledge for the first time today. I was soooo pumped when I did it. I think the Trail Gods were happy with me cause I helped clean up earlier.

Looks like a tough little spot, looks easy to spin the back tire, good job. A lot of my tough spots are rock with good traction, just have to overcome gravity, and poor bike handling skills.

Yesterday the conditions were optimal to get over the ledge. It was dry and the mud pit leading up to it was not slippery at all. So I was able to pick my line and turn my bike in the right direction. Usually I just slip and slide all the way then lose my balace before I even get to the ledge. lol.

If you take the first left at the pine tree, the second trail should lead you to the waterslide right next to the waterfall. It's not a hard downhill, just looks rocky. Bring swim shorts or go naked. Lots of college girls do it and they are very friendly. Have fun! Don't forget dinner at that place after.

Wow, you were out at Kalopa yesterday? So who was I riding with in Kulani? I'm jealous, you've figured out the "cloning" thing, you can be riding two different trails at the same time. I want, I want, I want................

Not that I know of. The terrain looks perfect for trails, but I think there is too many hunters in there. I wouldn't want to risk it.

Aikane, Been exploring the trails in Volcano area. Did the Escape Road (Died coming back up!). Now they have the gate @ 1 mile down kind of sealed off.

Happy Holidays you guys, remember-if you're ever in California: I know this area well enough to give some good tours. I'd be delighted, especially after my time in Hawaii.

Volcano Nat'l Park is a fun place to ride, lots of great scenery and some trick obstacles too. Just gotta be careful not to buzz the tourist.
Come down to Kulani some time and meet the guys.

Living is well, I miss Hawaii-that was different. Trails are great out here right now: can't ride them though! I got a minor surgery-they wanted some of my lymph nodes.

Hey Jonas you should try and ask this question on the Facebook page. You might get a better response there. At least more people will see it.

Kulani was still a little soggy this afternoon. The roots were still slippery. I ran into aikane and we had a little impromptu vid sesh. I just heard some rain falling tonight. It's probably going to be a little wet and wild tomorrow. Definitely wild.

For sure some day I will make it back out there to ride. So many trails, so little time. I even see lines through the snow here in MI. I've been lucky enough to have ridden all over the place over the years. Ehigh, you know you can always hook up with us to ride when you're back on the islands.

Hehe! You are addicted bud. Happy 2013 to all of you out there. More TITS for sure, looking forward to getting back on the island and getting the tires turning. So many trails to ride, so little time. I also have so many experiments I want to try with bikes. I guess I still need something to continue to fund my porn.

I hope everyone got their first ride of the year out of the way already. I did a quick 7.5 mile road ride around my neighborhood this morning. I just wanted to fool around with my new clip-in pedals. Climbing the steep hills were easier, but I know I need practice. 2013 is going to be another learning year for me.

I picked up the Candy 3. I wanted to get something that wasn't too expensive, but decent. For $80 these seemed like a good choice.
