    Flightline 1 rookie

I bought a Flightline 1 last summer and now I wanna get disc brakes. Can I do this?

My understanding is that I'll need new wheels but will the frame and fork(rst? somethinerother) accept this change? Im guessing the two little holes on the frame and fork are for this purpose. I know the higher end Flightlines have disc so Im assuming this is the same frame.

    Thanks,
    Rex

If your Flightline One has RST 191 forks on it, it will have disc brake tabs on fork legs. The frame also has disc brake tabs. So the answer is yes, you can upgrade to disc brakes. If you decide to buy mechanical disc brakes, all you will need to do is buy the calipers/rotors. If you buy hydraulics, the lever will be included with the brake system. You'll also need new wheels (technically, all you need are disc brake compatible hubs, but you'll likely spend more money getting them relaced onto your old rims).

    Thanks a lot, Jill.

I really appreciate the fact that you take so much time to answer questions on here, it is one more reason Im glad I chose a Haro.

Now I gotta convince my wife I need new brakes and new wheels to replace the perfectly fine ones I already own. Wish me luck.

Just tell her they will keep you safe since disc brakes will stop more efficiently....

ok, so Im researching wheels and it seems like they are all shimano 8/9 speed compatible. Does this mean I will need to buy a new cassette too as my bike is a 7-speed? If so, will it fit and what other things(shifters? deraillers?) will need to be replaced?

Tons of rookie questions, I know.. im a little behind.

Yup you will need a new cassette, drive chain, shifters, rear derailleur and front sprockets to upgrade to a 9 speed.

Ouch. No wonder everbody seems to reply with, "just buy a brand new bike."

So does that mean I cant keep the 7 speed and keep looking for 7 speed hubs? Does this even make sense?

I seem to be getting more confused the more I research this.

The difference between 7 and 9 is pretty huge because of the gearing options. If your serious about upgrading shoot me a PM. I have a rear cog set and front sprockets used, might be able to dig up a used chain. I also have some LX shifters and rear derailleur used and 9 speed, your front derailleur will work fine since 3 is 3 on front sprockets.

Edit: Cute little Lady their, I have all boys my social adviser wanted at least 1 girl guess I missed.

G'day rexdog this is what I have, the drive chain is too short so you'll need to get a new one. I'll try and get this out your way Mon, as soon as it goes out I'll PM you the tracking #.

Next you'll need to upgrade to disc wheel and disc to match, LoL.

LoL thats Awesome bro!!!!! You will need 2 special tools to remove & one to install the rear cog set, you can either buy the tools about $30 or when you buy the 9 speed chain ask the shop if they can swap the cog out for ya with a 12 pack of beer in the car waiting for the yes.

The little Lady may be the next World Champion DH-Jill.

I dont use the gear indicators thats why the one is duck taped over.

The funding for my "Disc Brake Project" seems to be at somewhat of a standstill...project may have to be postponed a few weeks til my birthday(35th so Ill be eligible to run for president. woohoo)... however, I have taken off my old deraillier and will atempt to put on the new one this afternoon.

This will be my first try at this, seems like the adjusting may be a bit over my head. I have read lots about it though and think its worth a shot.

It is my understanding that the new deraillier will work with my 7-speed cassette(?) as long as I use the 7-speed shifters. Does this sound right?

You can still set up the 9 speed without disc brakes, Im not sure about the 9sp derailleur shifting on a 7 shifter. I know it will work on a 8sp.

    Are your wheels disc ready???

My wheels aren't disc ready so thats why I was gonna stick with the 7-speed. Although, maybe I could get wheels that will accept both disc and v-brakes for now, and hold off on the brakes for a bit.

Damn Im sick of being broke.

These Deore/Sun Ringle wheels are excellent bang for the buck.
