    2004 Extreme X2 - Frame Build Questions

I bought a 2004 Haro Extreme X2 frame and am buildng a bike with it. I have a few questions about parts for it.

All it came with was the headset. It is a zero stack and I think it is the stock headset. It has the internal cups, bearings and the little plastic bearing retainers. Unfortunately it doesn't have the fork crown races. I went to my local Haro dealer to see if he could possibly get some races that would work with it. He acted like he couldn't, but really didn't try too hard. Does anyone know where I might be able to find just some races that will work with it? The headset seems to be in great shape and I hate to buy a new one just because the races are missing. I can post a pic of the headset if you want to see it. FYI - I'm wanting to put a double crown fork on it.

What kind of front derailer will work with this frame? Will any top pull that fits the down tube work? Tube dia , pull, swing? The dealer was telling me that it has to have a special derailer and they are hard to find. He said that it will only work with one that mounts to the bottom bracket.

When you say fork crown race your talking about the race that goes over the steer tube?

The front derailleur should be simple if your LBS knows anything.

It looks like a low clamp top swing.

Yes, the fork crown race for sure on the bottom and whatever is missing on the top. All I have are the pressed in cups, the bearings and the little circular plastic ring clips that hold the bearings in place. It didn't come with anything else. I was hoping to get lucky and find a source for just the missing parts. Unfortunately, it is looking I may have to buy a new headset.

The one I went to is a local shop with about 4 locations in the area. I know that they don't carry all lines at all stores. They didn't have any Haro MTB bikes there, only BMX. The dealer locator did show that there was another dealer across town (Sun and Ski Sports). I haven't been in there in a few years. They used to only sell camping gear. I'll check them out tomorrow, but their website shows only BMX bikes as well. Bummer.

Are you suggesting that a Haro dealer may be able to get the individual pieces? That's what I was origionally hoping. I'm trying to build this thing as cheap as possble with an assortment of parts. My old Cannondale Delta V 700 finally had to be put down and I need a new bike to get me back into shape.

I wish buying parts for a mountain bike was like buying parts for a dirt bike. All you have to do is go to the parts diagram, see what part you need and then order it - easy.

You should be able to go to any LBS and get a race, it's not that special. Heck i'm not a dealer but I have races so any LBS should have something in their service department they can give or sell you. A 12 pack of beer usually goes a long way.
