Requesting Serial Number Decode - Mid 90's Tempest?

Oh, ye great gurus of all things GT!

There's a GT Tempest I now have my eye on. From the mediocre photo, it looks to be a mid 90's ball burnished aluminum frame. But the owner doesn't know the year and doesn't know much about the setup.

He was nice enough to read the SN to me over the phone: SK5K02654

Can someone help me decode this (or point me where to go for the information)?

I'm most curious about the metal (steel or alu), size, and year.

    Thank you!

Never mind. After some more google searching, it appears that the SN is not a reliable method to determine the year or model. If someone knows otherwise, please let me know.

    Thanks!

my early tempest was Tange MTB steel tubing. Orange bike. Sold to buddy, they still beat the hell outta it (15yr old kid). So, a little heavy, but bomber.

I decided not to pursue the tempest. I'm now working on a low cost XC bike (probably a GT) for a friend of mine at work. I'm trying to entice him into mountain biking without him having to drop a load of cash.
