I rode this bike for about 10 years until I replaced it last year. I've upgraded it with RaceFace cranks, new X9 etc and now it's a girlfriend / friends etc bike.

*Like a giddy little school girl, I ran outside with bike in hand at the first sign of snow. Just a stock 2.0 Dics. But it won't be for long. Anyone have thoughts on upgrading it? I have been told there are only so many things you can do to a chevy, and it will still be a chevy. I don't know I think the frame is pretty solid, and would make a good base for upgrades...namely, Avids, and some Rockshocks. At least to start with.

My old XCR I never should have sold is the polished 8 speed silver. I set that bike up with factory DH tires and fire xc's and that was a blast to drive but the i-drive gave me alot of noise so I sold it.
The green XCR I currently own although the frame is a little heavier. It is sub 28lbs which is fine with me and I am running it more for XC race more then freeriding as with my other bikes.
The LTS was my first love...what a fun bike after I dumped a Risse Genesis on it and replaced the bushings 1,000 times. Worth every replacement I did.
Dyno Roadster was a beast to get around till I got a Nexus 7 speed. 60 lbs of pure oldschool joy
I threw in the Specialized Big Hit Spec which I just parted out to get where I am today. Enjoy!

    2006 GT i-Drive 4 4.0

Hi everybody, I'm quite new to cycling and to the forum and I'd be glad if someone could help me with a little dilemma.

I just purchased a 2006 GT i-Drive 4 4.0 off ebay but I'm having doubts about the bike' size.

I am 5'9" and I have to choose between 17.5 (Small) or 19.5(Medium). Is there anybody out there that owns any of the 2006 i-Drive 4 series that could give me some advice?

I've searched the web over and over but I came across no valuable information about this bike's frame sizes.

My instinct tells me I should go for the M, however, I currently own an 18" bike and it fits me perfectly.

    I'd really appreciate some help

    Regards
    Chris

Rather than posting in this photo thread, you might want to start a new thread on the GT board asking for frame size help for this specific bike.

I would have to say go for the medium for sure. I have an Avalanche 2.0 Disc (see above). This is a large frame size. I'm 6' 3" and it is boderline too big. Frame fits me quite well, but I worry about my ability to bail on it, if need be. Pretty sure I could nut myself on the frame if I wiped out.

But, yea...most definitely go with the medium. Your leg should be nearly fully extended when the pedal is at the bottom of its travel. If your knees are constantly bent when your pedaling, you are wasting energy. You don't want to get a small, and have to jack the seat up to achieve pedaling efficiency...this will put your body in an awkward position which will fatigue and sore you over distances.

    Just my humble opinion...happy trails.

    Pax-

    Mike

    Thanks Mike,
Yes, at the end I chose the Medium one and it fits me perfectly. Nice bike, although, it feels a bit scary off road when going downhill on bumpy tracks.

Used to have a Saracen (very robust but heavy) and I used to feel much more confident on the same tracks. The GT seems fragile, hopefully it's just my impression as it is much lighter.

Also, the saddle is very high (can't touch my feet on the ground) and haven't managed to get it lower as it seems that the tube needs to be cut (is this normal?). At the moment I feel much of my weight is unevenly distributed (towards the front)... maybe that's another reason for being scary downhill.

I've now ordered some clipless pedals (Shimano PD M520) and I'm looking for some good value shoes. If anybody has some suggestions feel free to help as I'm quite new to cycling.

    Thanks
    Chris

my I-drive team and my buddy's just built Zaskar Team

My buddy has been wanting a hardtail frame for a while and I told him of the Zaskar Team frame being light and stiff. We hunted ebay for a while and we found one just his size. It weighs in at 22 lbs and that is with a Reba fork. He loves it to death. I'm happy he's happy cuz I luv GTs.

My daily commuter that I built up mostly from old parts around a frame I found from a liquidation sale.

    GT Zaskar Team 2005

I was upgrading my old commuter part by part, but the frame became so battered that instead of welding I decided to upgrade it too. The good news is that I don't miss the old frame a bit. The bad news is that this bike takes all kinds of sidepaths, and more time is spent on them..

I was a GT fan back in the early '80s when I got a freestyle frame from them on a cosponsor deal with them. When I got into mountain bikes three years ago, the best deal I could find on a full suspension mtb just happened to be a closeout on '04 GT i-drive 2.0s. My wife and I both got one and they have been great.

Here is a picture of my new (well new to me) 2001 GT Zaskar LE hardtail that I found in the local classifieds. Had been looking to get back into mountain biking with a GT for some time now...as I had a Karakoram back in the 90's before I feel out of riding for a while.

Absolutely love this bike. Its so fast....light (weights in just under 25 lbs with the clip in pedals..which I took off because I am not used to them yet)...and the welds are amazing on this thing. I have already done one local race with this bike with my best results ever.

It has XT and XTR all around......Race Face Turbine cranks......SRAM X.9 rear cog....Monkeylite Carbon bars....Rhyno Lite rims with Panaracer Trailblaster tires....easton seatpost...and Rock Shox SID fork. Quickest hardtail I have ever ridden...and as long as the frame lasts I don't see myself riding anything else. Gotta love those made by hand Santa Ana GT's.

Its a generic brand carbon fiber one I picked up years ago for cheap.

I should have gotten a few since decent looking ones are hard to come by now.

    Obsession of love

First we started with the humble Avalanche 0.1 disk...

Then I made the first couple of upgrades (looks pretty but rode like a dog)...

But then I came to my senses and got the urge to build these beauties...

And then after some more upgrades we were left with the finished product...

    But where to now????

where to now? how about replacing that POS fork...judging from the other upgrades, money isn't that much of an issue, so get a revelation or a reba I'd say.

    My Ride...

    2003 i-drive 1.0
Pictured pretty much stock. I've since changed out the grips, pedals, and seat. But that's pretty much it.... Recently slapped some 26 x 1.5 city tires on it for running around town on the pavement. I love the bike... Especially the Anthricite factory paint...

    Cheers,

    Scott

    My mini Team

Has anyone ever tried to paint one of these Road Champ bikes to match their real one? Nope? Am I the only GT Team Freako? Yep probably. It is a pain in the butt, but I love the results.

german bike mags recommended them back in the days every owner of a lts - long before betd was up to replacement bearings. theyre expensive but worth their money though.

i might have an manula of a bike mag showing how to replace those bearings - have to look it up if theres an interest let me know.

oh and my bikes is the lying purple one.... :-)

This is my first GT 1991 team avalanche sorry for the crappy scan!

Then came the 1998 zaskar built with pace forks and XT stuff

I then bought an 1999 LTS 2 in green with rock shox indy xc and LX i didnt like it and modifed it with a custom fire paint job, Formula disk brake, XT and LX and RST mozo pro forks. again sorry for the poor photo. (stolen)

I then went on to buy this LTS (usa made) frame and fit some XTR, XT and LX parts along with Kore stem DX brakes Mozo pro fork. (stolen)

I then bought this LTS 1000 Duel sport - custom mavic lemon rims, Hope front and rear hydraulic disk brakes, syncros seatpost, flite, XT and XT gear marzochi bomber, azonic bars and fox shock i loved this bike but sadly this was also stolen in 1999 from my house.

I then went to the XCR in Team colours in 2001

XTR, faceface, custom bomber air, custom fox shock, custom Red mavic x517 on DT hugi hubs, easton ea70 finnishing kit. (sold)

I also had this zaskar to match! - pace proclass fork, mavic 517, pace hub, XT and XTR, control tech stuff, Ringle post (sold to brother)

Thats the end of the GT story in my life both me and my pops own UK built orange 5 Pros

Well it was the end of the story until we got this!

I hope you enjoyed my GT story!

That is a VERY impressive selection you have there, can I have some? Just kidding. You wouldn't know of a method of sticking a more modern shock in a '97 LTS-DH would you?

risse makes trunnion mount shocks. and they should be first choice too if you have the titan linked dh. good shocks that are worth their money.

I'd be very interested in how you managed the disc brake on the back. I'm currently stuck in U-brake land with my '91 Z-LE. thanks. more pics of the brake? thanks
