    By the way, that one on the UK ebay listing is not a Xizang but a rebadged Lightning which was produced off shore. It's not a true USA frame. You can tell because it's fawn in color not high polished.

    HeyHey~

    original owner- I've ridden the hell out of this bike! It is all original XT with the exception of the front wheel/hub (ringle super-dupper bubba) which I got about 8 or 9 years ago? I replaced the rockshox mag21 with a jett (sorry I was broke- it was all I could afford at the time) - it's a commuter so the most abuse it gets is Market Street. I'm still using the original back wheel that came with the bike (mavic M261) and I'd like to get something lighter and more tuned to the street. has anyone any recommendations for rim/hub/spoke combos? I've been eyeing the Mavic Crossride on sale at performancebike.com- looks ok, I like the idea that its light and strong, haven't read too much about it though.

    It's a classic and it's served you well. I have a 91 Xizang and I'm going to 28 hole old stock wheels on my build up. I should forever and finally found some decent pricing on some 28 hole xtr hubs. There are tons of lighter 28 hole rims available for 10-15 dollars on ebay. Your 261's are durable but I think they hit the scales at what 450-460grams each?
    There were some new old stock Mavic Bontrager's on ebay at a reasonable price last week. I don't see any of the newer "wheel systems" being any lighter tham old lighter rims with 28 holes hubs. They have fewer spokes but all the rims are tanky and in the end don't save you any weight. All these 4-5 lb front suspension forks available today are overkill also. Hard to beat an older Mag 21 SL, Judy SL or SID for action and ride.

    I think it's closer to 500 grams, and it feels like it. my wife has a sears bought schwinn that is 15 years old, her bike is actually lighter than mine! The rack and those shocks added some heft. thanks for the leads!

    I have a 99 Xizang which was painted in Team White. I stripped the paint since it was a bit rough.

    The decal kit is different to this one and had red, white and black bands around it and I really liked the look of it. I've got photo somewhere if you are keen to see it. I couldn't find 99 replacement sticker kits anywhere.

    Why fully paint a Ti frame anyhow...sheesh..

    Do you know of the differences between the Xizang and Lightning ? I haven't ever seen a Lightning in the wild so can't compare.

    Are the serial numbers the only way to go or are other visible differences like the rear dropouts or the top tube cap etc ? I guess it depends on the year the frame was built and who built it.

    My dropouts have GT stamped in them and don't have the bullet dropouts which are common on some Ti frames which I think Sandvik might have done.

    Just wondering....

    BTW: The Xizang doesn't have a polished finish after the paint is removed. I'm probably a one -off though

    Thanks. I used a bottle of take-no-prisoners chemical stripper from the local hardware emporium. I don't have the name though but could find it if you are really keen.

    It didn't affect the Ti and I did test it on dropouts before going nuts with it.
    I used a fine grade Scotchbrite pad to buff it up when done. I was kind of worried when I took this shot though

    Here's and IDXC 4.0 with a few mods.

    I've swapped out the fork for a Manitou Minute 2:00. I've also upgraded the brakes: I'm now running Avid SD 7's. Finally, the rear shock is a Fox Float Rebound, and I'm just about to send it off to get it Pushed...

    here's my 1997ish zaskar. this summer i rescued it off of ebay for $66. i built it up just the way i wanted to. i was amazed at how easily it built up to sub 24lb range. this is the second zaskar i've ever owned, and i don't plan on hawking this one like i did the last one.

    You like many eBayer's got took. Your $66 dollar bargain is only a Zaskar by decals. That frame is either an Avalanche, or Pantera. USA built GT Zaskars had a Flat cap at the back end of the top tube not curved like the one in your pictures. Zaskars also had the serial number and frame size stamped in the left rear drop out. 6061 was also stamped on the inside of both dropouts. Sorry to break the bad news to you bro. Many others on this forum can confirm these details. Your serial number is probably on the bottom of the bottom bracket shell and starts with a letter or two followed by numbers. The attached pics are of a true Zaskar. Note all the details I listed above in these pictures. Flat top tube cap, 6061, and serial number and frame size stampings in the dropouts. Real American made Zaskars don't very often go as low as $66 dollars on Ebay umless they've been hammered and show it.

    thanks for the info gm1230126. i'd like to re-decal it. after doing more research, i may try to match things up and decal it correctly...so far it looks to be an avalance? i understand it could possibly be a pantera, or maybe even a backwoods, if they had a polished option.

    i still don't believe that i got took on ebay. whatever model 90's gt it may be, i got a great bike, at a great price! i don't care if a taiwanese kid welded this possible 7000 series aluminum thing...the beads look excellent!

    anyway, i found an old photo that my good friend and riding pal took in 1994. that's me sporting the jean shorts, gt karakoram, and a "concept" (amp) fork. ah yes, the good ol' days.

    Heres my 2003 (IIRC) GT Avalanche 3.0 in its current form.


    Everything besides the frame and fork is beaten to hell. I rode this bike into the ground and loved every minute of it. It was a solid preformer and the geometry is perfect.

    Do any of you think that it would be worth it for me to do a complete rebuild of the bike and make it an XC bike? If I were to make it into an XC bike I would want to run disc brakes with it. Am I right in thinking that I can mount discs on this bike?

    i have a question about my frame, if you can help. it is a 2001 zaskar X, flat top tube with GT stamp, Easton 6061 stamp on top of top tube, but serial number KU9L0132 on bottom of bottom bracket. i know it is a zaskar x due to decals and flat black powdercoat paint job. this was made in america, yes?

    I wish I knew more about this frame, but, unfortunately, I am a roadie that used this frame to start cycling. I upgraded it more than I should have before I bought a road bike in 2005. Mine now is complete Deore 9 speed, from 7 speed Acera, I have Truvativ Team Stylo Cranks. Recenty, I converted it to mechanical Deore disc brakes and upgraded the fork to a close out Manitou Axel Super and put Mavic/Deore Hub disc wheels on the bike It has Easton EA50 Stem, Handle Bar and Seatpost. The only thing OEM on the bike is the Seat Post Collar. For what I spent I could be riding something nice, but it is a fully serviceable Mtn Bike. I am sentimental, but I love this bike and dont want to give it up. I will post a picture soon. I recently put it to a trail test and it was awesome......

    so far I know after 99 nothing GT did came out of the states. The US frames have had the serial# by only using numbers and no letters. But don't worry, the frame's made of easton tubes are great and the Taiwanese are fine welders too.

    The first GT LTS 1000 DS I have owned since new in 1998 (16 inch frame) anodised orange/mango with black and silver components.

    It has pretty much all original 24 speed spec components XT/XTR.

    I have replaced - headset + seatpost + rear wheel which I replaced when turning rear to disc.

    The frame has a 1st generation Rockshox Super Deluxe 750 x 1.4 , also I have a spare 2nd generation Rockshox Super Deluxe 750 x 1.4 shock.

    The frame is fitted with retro 3 bolt Rockshox discs brakes - 3 bolt rotors front 160mm and rear 140mm with 2 spare callipers and 210mm rotors.

    I had the frame fitted with full BETD bearing kit all pivot points replaced with roller bearings(no more squeaks)

    also BETD bolt on rear disc mount and mech hanger

    The hubs front and rear are polished White Industries 3 bolt disc with Rockshox rotors

    I have 4 spare NOS 3 bolt White Industries hubs waiting to become more wheels

    3 are boxxer hubs and one is a rockshox hub by white industries - 3 front + 1 rear

    2 - front 20mm bolt thru X 110mm hubs
    1 - front QR Rockshox disc 100mm hub
    1 - rear is boxxer 135mm 3 bolt


    Additionally I have one 6 bolt White Industries second hand silver QR front M16 hub so if I ever change this bike to 6 bolt hubs and rotors incase I run out of spares for the 3 bolt Rockshox discs spares.

    This bike is now turning into my street/commuter bike as I have just put some DMR Transission 2.2 street/vert tires on with tread that run right up to the rim.

    I am toying with the idea of going single speed , or 11-32 cassette rear - single 42 tooth front (London is flat and fast to ride so I never use a granny ring, infrequently middle ring).

    3 months ago I bought another NOS 1999 LTS 1000 DS (FACTORY) polished silver (18 inch frame) with slightly longer travel , disc specific rear end , it has :-

    extra light weight machined CNC trunnion mount linkage plate.

    chainstays with integral disc mount.

    non standard bearing kit - different to the bushings my original LTS orange came with.

    this frame has a longer stroke Rock Shox Super Deluxe rear shock fitted.

    I am hoping this frame might have longer travel(above standard 5 inch)

    I have 2 springs to fit it 550 and 800 looking likely I will be putting the latter on it as it fits my weight better.

    This bike , I hope is going to be interesting and cant wait to finish building it.

    I am useing latest up to date new components , so far have the following purchased.


    - 2006 LX discs calliper + levers with 160 rotors (the largest rotor you can fit into rear stay before rotor hits frame).

    - anodised black - White Industries ISO hubs - front - Venti 20mm thru front hub - rear - M16 and to be laced up on to mavic XM 321's

    - SAINT 22-32-44 crankset

    - XT shifters + 11-32 cassette + top swing front mech

    - XTR chain

    - Kore seatpost

    - GT titanium saddle


    I am looking into fitting a SAINT rear hub and rear mech as I like the black component or SRAM X.0 rear carbon mech and shifters for trick value.

    Still looking into the front end - fork, headset, stem and bar combo

    I have 4 forks in mind -

    - 2006 boxxer ride U-turn

    - 2007 pikes

    - 2007 lyrik coil U-turn

    - Fox R36


    I am finding it hard to decide on the final fork spec , any opinions?

    what do you think?

    has anyone much experience with the above forks dos or dont on fork choice?

    well here are some of my rags, first one is an ebay shot of my current ride - its a 1993 karakoram elite, i believe it was sold in the us as corrado and in germany as elite because of some TM of VW. on corrado.
    as i said ebay shot - this one is slightly modified by now, but i dont have a contemporary pic under 250kb (this limit sucks...any way to bypass this ?)

    Its an awesome ride, I first bought this modell as my first REAL mTb in 1993 for sthg about 1100 € or ~ 1300 USD.. it was an 22" bike since im 2,06m (7ft ?) and it was stolen after miles and miles in 2000. 6 years later i got this and although its an 20" bike it performs AWESOME !. steel is real .i do say. I has a trutemper gtx ultra 3 plumbing which is quite highclass for this money backinthedays.

    The Zaskar was my race bike for a couple of years. Now that I don't have that much time anymore it is standing mainly at home - looking nice. The '96 model had the best looking frame in my opinion except those of the two following years with the machined dropouts. The only thing I would have liked more was a Xizang but I could never afford it...

    This bike had full XT groupset right down to the hubs but has been converted to single speed for something different and muddy races. It is very light.

    2006 GT 5 idrive 3.0

    Brand new, ridden for the first time today. It needs a lighter wheelset, crankset, some carbon fiber and a new fork but It is fun starting point. I'm waiting for the extra firm spring kit to come for the fork. The 5 inches of travel is awesome. The rear shock is nice, but the fork sucks.

    My beloved '96 Zaskar LE back in '03 when I was in NY for college. Been riding it for just about a decade now. Ever since I bought it as a frame in HS at 16.


    There was a period where I traded the frame out for a '96 LTS-2 for a bit but went back after I snapped the swingarm.


    Spins have long since cracked and been replaced with standard XT wheels. Graphics were my own creation just in case it got stolen and wound up on Ebay. Need to take some pics of it now.

    Trying to decide whether to turn it into a commuter/urban bike, dirt jumper, or save as a spare mt bike...awful quality photo I know.

    I pulled this bike out of the dumpster...the downstairs neighbor in college had this bike since it was new but gave up biking years ago and didn't want the bike anymore. works like brand new, out of the shop bike!

    my bushings are also still in tact. When the bushings are out of order, i will build a new by myself and will use standard bearings. I find the LTS-kit from BETD also to expensive.

    But there is also an other bearing-kit available. It is produced bei stoeckli in switzerland.

    i would go with the bearings if you can, i have said this to many people before who have asked, i replaced my original Acid orange annodised pivots with bearings some 3 years ago and i cant tell you how much better the bike worked.

    i found that i was able to dial the rear end far more efficiantly to make the bike ride how i wanted it to.

    Also it seemed to be more active and there was no more problems with SQUEEKS! in the wet weather when the bushings got contaminated.

    they are not the cheapest but they will prolong your frames life and they can then be easily replaced when they wear without having the nightmare of finding obsolete , hard to find parts.

    The BETD are the only kit i have heard of until GT-heini mentoined stoeckli in switzerland, i am now interested in looking into these.

    GT-heini do you have a link to stoeckli in switzerland and a cost for the kit?

    GT Backwoods? I was told. I bought the frame only off ebay a year ago it is now my singlespeed I love it!!! Weight is 23lbs 4oz. If anyone knows what model it is let me know the serial number starts with F and dropouts are stamped 7005.
