2001 Avalanche 1.0; The last of the good ones made in California, 7000 series Aluminum, XT/Deore, Avid BB&'s with 165mm rotors and GT Hubs with Syncros Big Box rims - GREAT WHEELS!!

Can you believe I found a dozen of these bikes stuffed away in a warehouse? They had been Jacksonville Fla Fire and Rescue bikes, barely ridden and retired years ago. I bought them all.

This one has been my main ride from day one. With an upgrade to sticky 2.25 tires and a WTB Pure V saddle it's all I need.

My local bike shop took back my Backwoods COMP, and I traded up to a Sensor! Now I just need a day off to go ride it!

    GT Karakoram Commuter

I just converted this late 90s GT Karakoram into a commuter bike. It had been setup as a 1x9, but it didn't get much love since I usually ride my Bandersnatch.

Anyhow, the bike has a new 3x9 drivetrain thanks to my parts bin and the local REI. The Marzocchi suspension fork was replaced by the original rigid fork and a well-used Chris King headset. Planet Bike forks make it better for the commute with a recycled Jandd rack finishing off the rear. It's great fun to ride. I put 50 miles on it in the last week.

Here are some pix of the bike as it stands today:

In my opinion, that's a very smart setup for a bike like this. I imagine it makes a real nice commuter.

I have been contemplating going this direction with my old 90s tequesta. I just don't find that I ever use it setup for the trails. It's simply too far down in the pecking order. But if it was setup like yours, I think I would probably use it more.

I like it. Here in AZ we do not see the wet weather very often so I would not need the fenders. I might take my 93 Timberline in that direction.

Here's my 1993 blacklight faded* karakoram. Had to replace the crank with an exage because the previous owner commuted quite a bit with a lose crank, and the seat was a womens specific walmart thing. Now it's a blingy GT seat!
Rear tire was a neat old onza, but that got torn open on it's first ride. Oh the wheels aren't original, they're matrix singletrack pros.
    Post your GT here!!!-karakoram.jpg

I was pretty excited to have found a nicer old GT to ride around on, but after i bought this i found some full suspension wonders that i ride around on more now (more obligation to ride those- more expensive!). This is still a pretty nice bike, it won't be demoted to commuter status eh?

I bought my GT Tempest in March 1998 (still have the original receipt), not sure what year it was but they had told me it was the previous year model, it came with WTB Velociraptors and being a great bike on the trails until I retired it in 2010, trying to revive it again to hit up the trails with it again and give my 29r a break once in a while. Just need to figure out a way to bring the ballburnish finish close to its original look and hopefully new original decals.

Try wadding, or 0000 steel wool with Windex as a cutting medium. The 0000 will not affect the decals.

    Robot Check

    Robot Check

You can also get the wadding at Autozone and the wool at Home Depot. Then, you can polish to your hearts content with some liquid polish.

Here's an example I did with the 0000 and didn't polish it quite to chrome:

You can use Mother's to final polish.

    Robot Check

MAN! I wish I could get my mitts on that frame!

    hi there!
here's my GT avalanche '92 in the very hard to find BAJA BLUE colour; the 'normal' colout for the 92 avalanche was white...
got it last week from a 71 year old man from Zurich for 150 SFR (150 $)!!!
he had bought it in 1992 and the bike has seen very little to (probably) no use at all... it's one of the first paintjobs with the later famous blue/yellow combo. i could only find about 5 pictures of this 'baja blue' avalanche bike with google, so i thought i should add a few more... it is an awesome bike!! except for the saddle and the tires (which had been removed and replaced with something according to the original owner's liking when he bought it) the bike is 100% original.. and MINT! NOT A SCRATCH!
    hope you like the pictures!

MAD love for the Baja Blue Avalanche. I've only seen one other in the states around '93 or so. That's still one of the most elegant and classic MTB profiles of all time. I would NOT ruin that with a suspension fork and ride it as it was meant to be ridden. You'll be amazed how much fun it is to go slow on a full rigid, picking lines and enjoying the experience.

That's still a great component grouppo. I'd replace the chain with a Sram 751 and be happy. I still have my Ritchey Vantage Comp rims laying around. They are single-wall and those U-brakes will eventually chew through them.

    Lovely bike!

Post your GT here!!!-anca7655.jpghi AJ (and pkovo)!
    thanks fo the nice comments!
don't worry, i have no intention whatsover to add a suspension... the great 2.25 ONZA canine tires do the 'suspension' job, anyway, at the moment... and i think they look 'retro'/classic and 'cool' at the same time. a real 'boutique bike'... and i am used to riding no-suspension a LOT (my panasonic mc 'team/xtr 900 (see pic!) and panasonic mc4500, my commuter and winter bike))....
regards from the wintry swiss alps
    chris
p.s. of course, the old man i got the baja blue avalanche from had NOT replaced the tires and saddle with a selle italia slr in yellow (that was ME two days ago), nor the tires with ONZA canis 2.25's .. that was me, too.... his version had looked like this:Post your GT here!!!-2016-01-14-14.33.02.jpg

I hate that 'gold race coat' as much as I love the lowers =(
I am considering buying used 55 with rc3 evo (preferably with nickel coated stanchions) and putting 350 lowers on them.

    Karakoram

GT Karakoram, picked it up on Craigslist about 2 months ago, and instantly loved it. Never had a bike that fit me so well (6'5" but long in the trunk, not so much in the legs) and felt like such a good balance between solid and nimble.

I've started down the rabbit hole with a few upgrades. RockShox Recon Silver fork, Deore M615 brakes, DMR Defy stem, Schwalbe Hurricane tires, Click'r pedals. Trying to keep a good balance between commuter/calorie burner and singletrack-ready...

    Good job!

Hey everybody I just joined up! Very glad to see that there is still a GT forum on here! I have my 1999 GT Aggressor that I bought new in 1999. Yeah there are "better" and more expensive bikes out there but I can't afford them and my GT is getting the job done so.....
Looking forward to being a part of the community.

bought 2nd hand in what I thought to be good condition turns out it had never been looked after and ive pretty much had to replace nearly everything on the bike

rear dropouts prone to creaking due to water running down inside of frame big factory fault.
awesome bike takes a beating I cant break it will eventually trade up to a 2016 sanction or 2016 force

Thanks for the tip on the steelwool/windex and mothers, after a few hours and 2-3 passes the mirror look is back, now I'm to hesitant to take it out on the trails since is so clean and shiny.

... and if we just ... my brand-"new" GT Sanction 2012

    Hi guys,

a couple of months ago I have visited this section of the forum(GT section) trying to find out if it would be a good idea to sell my orbea Alma and also my 3 months old 2012 GT Sanction(more info about it a little bit later) and get a GT Sensor Team Edition which I would have used as an all purpose bike, all mountain as well as xc/marathon races.

In the mean time, I have give up on this plan and decided to continue with two bikes(1 hell of an updated Orbea Alma - DT Swiss, Vittoria Mezcal G+ tires, XT-XTR, One-Up 50t, Fabric, carbon parts, etc-etc); this is where we get back to my "new" GT Sanction 2.0, 2012 model.

I have purchased it in September last year, from a bike-shop's unsold stock, paying for it around 1400 USD for it. I have ride it all autumn(until November) and then, in January, decided to strip it to the bare metal and build it again with brand new parts thinking that, "if it rides that good with the average/medium quality and performance parts, then it should be pretty good with "high"-performance parts.

    easier said then done:
I have sold to a friend all the parts from it, got around 500 USD for them and then, started a long process of buying new parts. The list is below. I'm still working my way to the suspension settings but the bike feels almost perfect. I should say that a brand new shock with piggy-back is in order but, I'm waiting for the off-season sales.

    specs/parts:
frame: GT Sanction 2.0, 2012 model, M size, RP23 shock
Fork: Pike RTC3, solo air, 160 mm
Stem: Syntace Megaforce 2, 50 mm
Handlebar: Syntace Vector Carbon high 20, 780 mm
    Grips: ESI chunky, red
Wheels: Flow EX rims, Sapim CX-Ray spokes, Tune King&Kong hubs
Tires: Vittoria Morsa Graphene+, 2.3" in size(actually, they are huge)
Crankset: Absolute Oval 32T chainring + XT crank-arms
Chain: KMC X11 SL DLC, red
Rear derailleur: XT 11x, mid cage
    Cassette: XT 11-46
    Shifter: XTR 11x
Brakes: Saints + XT rotors(180mm front and back)
    Seatpost: KS LEV 125mm
    saddle: Fabric Radius Scoop, red
    pedals: XT trail

and some photos, the last, being actually from today, from my office

It took 7 months but, now my little red beast is ready to blast every trail I can offer to it!

left is 96?, middle is pre 96 but post post 92 (so 93-95) and right is 98?

But if you got is as a bare frame could be anything aluminium for GT.
All the gear and no idea.

Oh man, I loved those Syncros cranks. I had an Avalanche that was kitted out very similarly to this rig, in '98.

Yeah. Unfortunately, the alu insert with the taper cracked on the drive side. A few years later, I sold them (mentioning the crack) for $150! I bet you didn't have the Votec forks

When the BB wears out, swap out the crankset for a Hollowtec=II setup. It makes a world of difference

Plenty of room in the rear swingarm for 29er tyres.
Geometry is not bad - even with a 340mm BB height. Has plenty of standover clearance.
    Has a Fox 34 Fit4 Boost 130mm 29er/27.5+ fork, 1x10 - 32t oval chainring + (11-42) and a Giant remote dropper post. Weighs around 13.95kg.
Finished bike works the best it has ever been - climbs like a mountain goat - hooks up on stuff that I used to have to get off and walk up. Rolls over most terrain with ease. Very good on the downhill as well.

Doing some long overdue maintenance. I bought it new in '99 and haven't done anything to it (maintenance wise) since I had it. Will post after pics when I get finished.

Here is my 2013 Karakoram 29er. Bought new, changed just about everything:

    Rockshox Recon Silver RL
RaceFace Ride Cranks (1x9 with Cromag 38t chainring)
    XT 9sp derailleur
    SLX 9sp cassette
WTB Pure Race saddle on RaceFace Ride seat post
Shimano Deore 615 brakes on RT66 rotors
Mavic xm119 wheels with Continental Race King tires

I ride this bike commuting and trails. The 38t ring is for commuting, I have a 34t that I plan to swap for trails. The wheels were necessary becasue I had two Alex rear rims that became so bent they were unable to be trued. I really like the 1x9, may go 1x10 when these parts wear out.

Doing some long overdue maintenance. I bought it new in '99 and haven't done anything to it (maintenance wise) since I had it. Will post after pics when I get finished.

Finally got it (mostly) done. Cleaned everything and touched up bare spots with some primer to protect.
New:headset bearings; wheel bearings; chain; cassette; crankset/BB (now a 1X7); shift cable; tires.
    Original:seat; rims; bars.

Will probably swap out the handlebars for something more hand friendly. Also may go back to my WTB speed saddle.

I know some would advise against putting money in this bike but I love it and have no intention of retiring it (granted I don't do serious singeltrack). Rides good as new, I won't be so long next time doing the maintenance.

Just recently got back to pedaling and now I think I might have bought the wrong bike.

    Small changes from stock.

New grips, Mitas Kratos Tires, Tubeless conversion, Mush guard in the front.

    Biggest improvement was the tires!
