    Has anyone heard about predators attacking people on the trails? National Geographic, Animal Planet and Discovery Channel stated big wild cats are starting to migrate to civilization attacking people on trails.

    Only thing that I've ever been chased by was a wild Tom turkey. Damn thing was HUGE and wanted me dead. I think I got between him and his hens...man, that thing chased me for about 1/2 mile.

    As for wild animals, IIRC, about 10 years ago, a member on this site was involved in a mt. lion attack either in Cali or North of that. There was a big hullabaloo about what to carry, what to do, etc.

    I recently purchased the TH Industries Early GT I Drive Eccentric Cup Seal and Bearing kit and I have some significant issues with it. First, the bearing retainers are 2 different diameters. I realized why this was when I started inspecting the cups with my micrometer and calipers after the installation looked very wrong. Most notably, the original cups have a hardened race pressed into them..probably cryogenically. Yours do not. After a quick trip around the block, the cups already show wear because the bearings are basically running against non-hardened surfaces. As well, I noticed that some of the machining was off ever so slightly. Being a machinist myself, these were things I realized right away. Either these were not completed at the factory, or they are the cups from a different set. Please advise me as to how we can rectify this.

    Being an '01 GT iDrive 4.0, my bike uses the TH Industries USA Pat stamped cups. The problem is that the cups you're selling don't have the heat-treated steel race pressed into the cups, which were in the TH Industries stamped cups. I've replaced cups on this bike 4 times since new and I've kept all of the used ones and all have heat-treated steel races pressed into them.

    Incidentally, I also have a set of GT printed cups and those have heat-treated steel races pressed into them as well, although they fit the GT iDrive 1.0 and 2.0 frames from the same year. I have contacted several other riders who have these cups and theirs are missing the heat-treated races as well. If you require pictures, I can provide them.

    Actually, it is more difficult to find the bearings here since the iDrive was carried on in Europe longer than here. The last time I was able to source the correct bearings (that actually were the REAL ones) was about 6 years ago.

    The GT printed bearings are fairly easy to come by, but they don't fit the 2001 that I have. The closest shop I can find that has any parts is in England:

    No, that's the leverage ratio, meaning that for every inch of shock travel, the actual wheel moves 4.5 times that. The iDrive is roughly a 4.5" travel without sag, so that would make sense. So with that in mind:

    The shock should be 6.5" eye to eye with a 1.5" stroke.

    Or 165mm x 38mm

    Here's a great thread that I was watching years ago. I ended upgrading to a Fox Vanilla R since the iDrive is designed with a platform built in, so having a lockout or platform wouldn't be any gain.

    I read that thread some (long) time ago.

    If I have the time, I will measure the wheel displacement allowed by the idrive system of my bike, but I seem to remember that it was 4'' (or 10cm).

    Thus I think 4.5'':1'' can be to optimistic...

    I seem to recall that the claimed travel was 4.5" or ~115mm. But we all know about claimed stuff.

    4" would make sense allowing for sag since sag should be set at about 10-15% travel, which would be about 15-20mm. Travel is mistakenly claimed without the sag built in when they do their press. The iDrive, like any other suspension systems...bike or otherwise, require negative travel (sag) in order to work properly.

    But when measuring shocks, I think they have to rely on the entire travel.

    On our bikes, the sag is set one of 2 ways. My bike came with a sag measuring tool that fits in the shock bolts when sitting on the bike. The text reads 155mm so, you're sagging about 10mm for proper preload.





    There's also an "eyeball gauge" stamped in the forging of the 3.0+ frames. Essentially, the vertical rib in the forging should line up with the iDrive ball. See the arrows. It's not scienturgic, but it's good for on the trail settings within a few mm or so.



    This is something I noticed when I was working on it just recently. Even though I've had the bike since 2001. Go figure.

    i-Drive 4.0

    This is my second i-Drive. First was a 5.0 so a slight improvement here :-) It has been kept in excellent condition and has some original Rock Shox Judy suspension, which have been professionally painted, along with plenty of other upgrades. I love it. What do you make of the Sweetskinz tyres? Rate or Hate? I'm going with Blue Panaracer anyway as these are just a novelty!

    Love that frame . I always like the sweetskinz as a novelty. You need a longer seat post. You should have a little post visible below the bottom of the seat mast.

    Year: 2001 Gt idrive TEAM modernized!

    AJ, I finally finished the $400.00 paint job on my GT Team idrive MTB. Description: Red – Front and Rear, Black fades into body with charcoal grey. The old colors were yellow tips with blue body. I stayed true to GT idrive team model. I could not find the decals, so I bought a custom GT decal from London, painted the idrive Team, and bought a Easton decal like the original. In my opinion the bike looks like a bad ass I-drive team version. What do you think?

    2001 GT idrive Team

    Thanks David,

    I wanted to modernize my bike, but stay classic to the team idrive original paint appearance. That way if anyone made an offer they would feel like they got the upgrade version of GT idrive team. I currently have it at bike shop getting Shimano XT and XTR part installed. I can't wait to hit the trails. I will update when bike is complete.

    I commend you on your work. Although what was bad ass with those bikes was the original Team GT race color scheme of blue and yellow. Plus by custom painting it you just dropped the vintage mystique and value down a notch or two. As I said your workmanship looks great I'm just disappointed you chose a frame that was one of the few original GT I-drive models that were hand built Easton taper wall tubing and special from the factory. Also the ping pong paddle sticker marked them as such against the blue and yellow race colors. With those special frames originality is where it's at. My 2 cents.

    I just went out fit a mud ride, first trail ride on my i-drive since may and when I finally reached the peak of the mountain, I got a pinch flat on the rear. Super bummer as I had a spare tube and lever, but I had to leave my CO2 inflator at home because 12g cartridge aren't long enough to seat properly and leak. So I had to walk down and hike the bike for the 300m vert. that I just climbed in heavy humidity. Stopped at a lbs on my way home to change tube and inflate, but still sucks. Maybe I'll go back out tonight if my legs feel like it.

    Sucks on the mud ride. Them's fun!

    I finally found the source of my never-ending creaking that I've been searching for for YEARS!

    It was the bottom bolt of my dog-bone loosening and creaking when pedaling, coasting, in/out of the saddle.

    The reason I never figured it out was because whenever it would start, I'd rebuild the entire iDrive mech and it would go away....because re-installing the dogbone was part of that. So, I always figured it was the iDrive cups moving around, or the mechanism itself.

    Hoe Lee Chit. What an idiot I am.

    I'll be replacing the bushings on the dogbone with these soon and start using blue loctite on them:

    Original i-Drive riders still out there?

    The dog-bone bolts also went loose on my brother's i-drive a while ago before I had built mine up, which is what I found after searching for the source of a clunk that always occurred when you step on the pedals. However, since the bolt was under a lot of side load, even when lifting the bike off the ground, it required quite a good amount of torque to screw it back all the way, thus fooling me at first when checking for the typical "loose" bolt. When I built mine up, I took extra care to apply loctite and torque them properly.

    Also, there's now the Loctite n°249 Quicktape available, it's like teflon tape, but in a tacky extra thin blue film that can be pre-applied days prior to assembly and doesn't make a mess. One roll of 260" is about $15 (amazon) and it's useful when you have to get the bolt through deep before engaging the threads. Also less mess for things like rotors bolts or stem bolts, where you don't have to interrupt the assembly to prep the next bolt. The new 243 formula is great too since it's oil tolerant and better grip on stainless and aluminum (great for calipers and chainring bolts).



    Also I went for a ride today, was fun, but not as muddy as yesterday would have been. Still I ripped the trails good and had lot of fun

    To me, the GT idrive TEAM bike is my favorite. I did not want to buy another bike because I love that GT model. I just wanted my bike to feel and look new. That bike is not for sale, so value or worth is not important to me. Regarding the vintage mystique, it still has it with a touch of new and anyone that knows about GT can see it is a GT idrive model. I just felt like I had to revive my bike and rebuilt it better than before with new parts. The blue and yellow got old because I have had the bike since 2001. I’m sure you like original paint and vintage look, but my bike was scratched and beat up from trails. I appreciate the comment.

    Thanks Bro, I love my bike and thought it would be cool to do a complete rebuild. New parts and paint job but stay original to the model. That is why you see GT idrive TEAM painted. I tried looking for original decals, but had no luck. I love the new look, my friends love it as well. They wanted to trade new Rocky Mountain and Scott MTB, but denied trades like in fantasy football. LOL.

    I'm just disappointed you chose a frame that was one of the few original GT I-drive models that were hand built Easton 6061 taper wall tubing and special from the factory. Also the ping pong paddle sticker marked them as such against the Team GT blue and yellow race colors. Those race colors is what distinguished them and designated them as special. No other GT bikes received that special paint job. The only ones that did were the hand built Easton 6061 taper wall tubing bikes out of the Santa Ana plant. They were special and in this day and era so far away from them being out of production any remaining ones out and about should be savor end and treasured and left bone stock as museum pieces.

    Besides the Team Zaskars that came in that color scheme. There were only 3 model i-drive models that came that way.

    Year 2000' Y2K I-drive
    Year 2000' XCR-LE I-drive
    Year 2001' Team I-drive

    All were hand built out of the Santa Ana plant and designated as such with that paint scheme.

    And you bought it in 2001' probably new I would think you would know how special of a model it is. And what that paint scheme means in the GT world.

    Who cares? GT certainly doesn't. Unless you're willing to chop open the frame and check the drawing and tapers, you wouldn't be able to tell anyway.

    The bike looks very nice. If I could get my pivot apart, I'd do the same thing over the winter.

    I understand your point of view however, I do not share the same vision. I documented my painting process and have pictures to see what my bike looked like. So if I ever wanted to go back to old paint job I will by replicating the original paint job. I replaced every part with Shimano XT, XTR, all top of the line by Shimano.

    Using your example of the 1967' Corvette 427 compared to the work I did on my bike. I would of up dated the vehicle with a nice paint job and replace with the best up to date suspension. So when I take a turn the handling is not like 1967, but more like 2014. I'm the type to enjoy what I have instead of watch it in a garage or in your terms museum. Nevertheless, we have a difference of opinion and I appreciate your opinion.

    AJ,

    Did you try to remove the hardened part from the old Idrive element bushings (the part that lack in our new bushings)?

    I had the (crazy) idea of turning the bushings 180º upside down in order to change the grooved hardened part to the upside of the bushings thus living the less battered in the lower part, improving the rotation of the idrive when I stand in the cranks.

    What you think, a bad plan?

    Wow you really took my car analogy to heart. Give me a break I think you know what I meant. I like how you emphasized "little" as in knowing little about a car. Like you really know me. All I was trying to get across was how special those frames are and its a shame to customize it. And from thrill23's response back to me at least he was understanding of where I was coming from as I am of his choice. But for you to come at me like this well that's a bit over the top for not even knowing me.

    LOL, DirtJunkie cool video, but I would not be putting that on my Team Idrive. I will post up new pics of all upgrades to the bike tomorrow. The bike rides smoother and ready for high impact trails.

    I figured out the issue with cell phone pics. You have to find the angel your phone takes correct pics. For example, my phone takes perfect pics avoiding upside down pics if my charger port faces to the right hand. If that will not work. You might be stuck rotating pic on pic edit app or computer.

    My idrive bike is desperately needing new idrive element bearings (good replacements).

    Someone know a source of good bearings (open oil bath)?

    Do you happen to know if the sealed bearings from top models (XCR1000 or other ) are usable in my XCR4000 (I think the frame was US made)?

    Cheers man Yea came with the Rock Shox Judy on which the previous owner had taken round trails (Wales area) with no complaints, I've yet to take it to some dirt as since I've had it I've spent most time trying to recover it after it was stolen from my shed. Now I've stuck new bars, wheels, tyres, new disc brakes and a seat post on. Got some Rock Shox Revelations in the post which I think will be tougher than these old Judy, gonna store those away so I shall let you know how it rides soon. It's sweet on tarmac so far haha

    Here's some photos of my then new 2000' GT XRC -LE.
    The first photo is right when I brought it home and it hadn't even been ridden yet. When I bought this bike I went in to Super Go in Oceanside [north San Diego] and inquired about the LE model. They had every other GT idrive on the sales floor but none of the managers even heard of this model coming out in the year 2000'. I told them it was the real deal and I want to special order one. The manager called up the GT rep who informed them that yes that model is coming out on a limited edition basis. I stopped the manager from hanging up and insisted that I want to special order one. The GT rep said that I could but he wasn't sure how long the wait was as it wasn't in production yet. I didn't care I wanted that bike and proceeded to special order it for 4K. Three weeks later Super Go called me up and let me know my bike had arrived. I raced the hour away to pick it up. As I walked in they took me to the back room where several employees were goo goo eyed over it. It was the first one they had seen and the first to be delivered to that Super Go. It was a special bike because of the lightweight Easton Taperwall 6061 aluminuim frame and some of the lightweight components in the build. It had disc brakes and weighed in at 26.5 lbs a full 1 1/4 less than the second in the GT line up the XCR-1000.

    Thanks! And no that bike is long gone. I broke two of those frames exactly 6 months apart. The second one was right after GT went bankrupt in 2001' so I was SOL for getting a warranty replacement frame. I ended up going to a different brand frame.

I went back through the thread and i found your post about your bike , what a shame.. I saw a blue and yellow i drive team on sale on ebay today. I wish i would of seen that one first instead hehe. Its a sweet ride. I just got my crank set im waiting on the idribe seals to arrive so i can asemble the whole thing. Ill post some pictures soon ^_^

    There is a 2001 4.0 i-drive for sale near me for $150 which I would love to buy, but I am having some confusion. I am about 6'-6'1" and the seller says that the frame is a medium or large and is 20", but at 6' tall he says I am way to big for the bike. Is that right? I figured at my height I would be able to be comfortable on either size. This is the best priced used bike that I have found locally that seems like it would be fun to ride. Does anyone know if this bike will fit or is the seller right that I am way to tall?

    I am in the military and am looking for an affordable and enjoyable to stay in shape in order to make passing a PT slightly easier. I can't stand running to stay in shape. My personal analogy is that I am like a dog, if you are throwing a ball I'll chase it all day long, but if you aren't I'm going to lay around all day.

    There's 2 ways to measure a rider. First is the "effective top-tube length" which is basically from the center of the seat post to the center of the head tube. Also, the inseam of your normal pants and the length of your torso can affect your sizing.

    I'm 6'1" with a 34" inseam and I'm long-armed. I ride (and have ridden) a 2001 iDrive 4.0 in the large size since it was new (about 5K miles). I have mine set up to put me in a more racer-like posture with my seat about 2 1/2 - 3" higher than my handlebars with a 120mm stem. Also, with my very long legs, I don't have a lot of torque so I'm a "spinner", rather than a "masher". At our size, it's really about the limbs. With my long limbs, I'm right in between a L and and XL.

    If you're more stocky...i.e. a shorter set of legs and arms but a longer torso, a medium might work. Also, more stocky dudes seem to be more "masher" -like. In other words you will have more power in your legs.

    One issue with that year of iDrive is the seat post mast. It can bend if you weigh too much and are a sit-and-spin rider. That's why the '01 had a lot of warranty replacements and a redesign a couple of years later. If the seat post mast bends, the frame is toast.

    If the dude can snap a pic of the bike and you can put it up here, I can identify what size and year it is. Outwardly, the differences are subtle.

    Does it look like a decent deal for $150? I plan on starting with some local trails that go from town to town and then get into a little bit more aggressive stuff, but not overly aggressive.

    Looks to be in good shape. The original price on these was about ~$1200 with full Deore 3x9 (ditch the chain and get a Sram PC951 or PC971) Avid SD3 brakes and Syncros BigBox rims with single gauge spokes with a Rockshox Judy C fork, SDG saddle, GT stem/bars/post/grips.

    The BigBox rims are hella strong for their weight, but it is a rim-brake only wheel since the hubs are non-disc. I converted mine to disc in '05 with American Classic hubs on Wheelsmith DB14 spokes and Mavic x317 rims.

    The only original thing on my bike are the rear spring and seatpost QR.

    As for the components on this bike, they should be good for beginning. I'd service tid fork and you might want to chase out a Judy HD spring kit. This fork basically has no external adjustments. Changing fork oil and springs are how to tune it. It's pretty simple to do. I actually still have mine with the "heavy" spring kit in it laying around. Just remember when looking for fork parts that there are a couple of years of Judy C forks and they're not cross-compatable.

    The Deore components of this vintage (I think 510 derailleur) are truly bomb proof. I only upgraded my drivetrain for weight savings. The Truvativ cranks are old school square-taper, which I also still run after 5K miles. With good maintenance, square-taper is still a valid choice..especially since the bottom brackets fit better in the iDrive eccentric.

    Bars, stem and seatpost are non issues, being very strong in their own right.

    The bike should weigh about 30 lbs as seen. I once had mine down below 26 lbs, but I was not happy with the choices I had to make.

Using a RaceFace 30t narrow/wide single ring, I actually installed the 2.5mm BB spacer (73mm BB shell) on the left side to get a perfect chainline (usually goes on the right for standard setups) and it did allow me to file a notch into the plastic spacer to clear the button head of the i-drive lockring screw that was right next to the BB cup. I feel pretty awesome about this, because it was a perfect fit out of the blue ! So stocked

    Has anyone successfully pressed out the main pivot pin on their '01-'03 iDrive 4+? I'm wanting to refinish the frame but I can't get the main pivot pin out. Do I need a press?

    I've asked GT on several occasions how to service the main pivot (this is the bushed one...not the team with the bearings).

    Is it a 10spd or 9spd ? The reason why I bought a new crank is I have a new commuter frame being build up that requires a 73mm BB width and my previous commuter had a nice square taper XT, but in 68mm. So I needed a new crank. I'd figure since my stock LX M571 on my 14yo i-drive use a 73mm BB and that I have a spare BB cartridge too, I'll buy a sweet crank to stick on the i-drive and use the LX on my commuter. I already sold the big chainring of the LX a while ago after getting my 30t NW ring, so I was planning to use the 28/40t chainrings of the new crank on my commuter, but geez that a nice set of chainrings that came with the SLX, I feel bad about trashing them on a commuter bike at the beginning of the winter. Maybe I could trade them locally for a set of 3 chainrings, or with a shop, idk yet. A bashguard wouldn't be a luxury tho, even if it's a commuter, I tend to hit snow banks, concrete boulders, urban features, etc with my chainrings. It didn't really matter before since I was running the stock '96 Alivio crankset, but now with thin alloy rings, I have to be more careful.

    Get us pics of your crank setup too !

    Yeah, you could lighten that up pretty well, though. First thing would be wheels and tires. You could lose a couple of pounds right there.

    Then, seat bars and post. But don't get a carbon post. Those things scare me.

    Oh, and here's the bushings/reducers.

    I was going to ask about the idrive parts. I just got a 99 xcr 3000 and it's missing the dogbone assembly. What else should I buy for the BB on this bike ?

    I believe it's a 2001 Timberline.
    The only other issue is that the DPO filled the front tire with "non-flat" goop - it must weigh 5 lbs by itself. Now that wheel is ruined, as I don't expect that the tire will ever come off - not that I had planned on using those wheels anyway, but I ususally keep old parts for just-in-case spares.

    I saw those on there last night. Thanks! Any advice on other parts? I had the bike checked over and replaced the rear cog, new cables and bottom bracket. Is the dog bone what keeps the BB from turning and throwing off the chain? Should I replace the bushing? Anything else?
    Thanks for everyone's help I haven't really worked on a bike in 30 years back in my BMX days.

    thanks!. Look back Into this thread some one posted a diagram of the whole I drive assembly. I think it was on page 32 or something. It helped me replace my idrive bushings

    I found it thanks to your help! AJ what an awesome job with the pics of the old idrive replacement manual. I needed that badly. The bike shop mechanic has been doing this 30 years and had never worked on one. My son has a 2000 xcr 3000 white/ blue in almost new condition and my 99 I just got needed some help. Now I can work on them
