    Karakoram or rockhopper

I am trying to decide if I should buy a rockhopper 29er pro and leave it stock for a while or purchase a gt Karakoram and upgrade it up to the specs I would like. I am leaning toward the gt at this point. Thing I can still pick up a 2.0 2012 for 599. Any input would be helpful. I have found quite a few people that love the rockhopper but think the advertising behind specialized helps. Has anyone had an issue with their Karakoram and riding a lot of single track? Heard of paint chipping problems. Any issues with the new frames.

The only issue I had with the Karakoram out of the box was chain suck and skipping. I can only suspect that it was a combination of the front derailleur and the crank as when I upgraded the problem went away. I have a 2011 3.0 so the components on the 2.0 will be a little better.

Have ridden a 2011 2.0 that has had the same problem. Rear derailleur did not hold adjustments that were made either. Plus I did not find geometry so great I would upgrade the flat bars to risers. The only rockhopper I've ridden was a 2006 model so I can't really help you for what they are now.

I have a 13' Karakoram 2.0. I have been riding fireroads at the beginning. Riding singletrack last couple of months. I haven't had any paint chipping problems yet. Shifts fine. Never dropped the chain yet, and I am pretty green on these fancy shift bikes. I would upgrade the wheels and probably the fork if you are a Clyde, as I am. Over all, very solid IMHO. Never ridden the Rockhopper though.

I have the 2012 1.0 and have been very pleased with it. No major issue except one of the stock pedals had bum bearings, but those pedals sucked anyway. Just allowed me to upgrade much sooner. Ride lots of singletrack with it in the PNW, been a great bike!
