I didn't think the 2013 Karakoram 2.0 was that heavy when I got it, but it's a bit surprising how much weight I've removed with just a few upgrades based on a broken fork and crank, and new wheels and pedals:
At this point, I've spent far more on upgrading parts of this bike than I did on the bike itself. The upgrades that had a meaningful impact on weight include:
That's roughly 1.59kg of weight gone from the bike, and it's still not light, although I do have fun riding it, and that's what matters. It may be the weights don't surprise anyone, but I thought it might be worth sharing in case it's interesting to some people.
Something I forgot in the initial post: Tubes. I ride the Black Flag Pros tubeless, and since the wheels were weighed with rim strips installed, that means that the valve and Stan's sealant is all that replaced the 178g tubes. I'd wager that's over 100g in weight savings per wheel.
I also just added a EC70 seatpost, which saved another 166g, which should take the total weight shaved to around 1.95 kg, definitely over 4 lbs.
Anyway, for anyone who cares what the stock components weigh, the seat post is 399g, and the saddle is 302g:
Yep I've followed the same obsessive path towards "weight-warrior," I'd say "weenie," but that carries a negative connotation, and thus inaccurate. Since when is light weight associated with negativity in a sport that's 100% dependent upon weight vs gravity. Illogical.
Anyhow, so you've saved ~3.50LBS, that's pretty damn good! I weighed mine with the XTR (M95x) upgrades ~33.0lbs (WOW!!!), I figure with a few more upgrades I can break the sub 30lbs range:
TOTAL Est savings: 617g + 516g + ~567.5g= 1700g = 3.746LBS
~33-3.746lbs = 29.26LBS!
Conclusion; some hurried math shows it is indeed possible to reach sub 30lbs with some minor (vs higher-end) components. Sub 30lbs is a GREAT measure for a monster strong frame, as the GT design is much more robost (triangular seat stays) vs competition. Then again when does someone break seat stay + Toptube welds?
Also, since the weight savings is primarily focused around the rotating mass/suspension components; the feel, handling and performance of the bike should be significant; meaning undeniable vs human perception error ("upgrade-bias")! I can't wait until I can make this all happen!
OP_What did you think about QR5 or 9mm vs QR15mm upgrades? This guy made his own!
