Riding near Rapid City/Mount Rushmore
My wife and I will be in the Rapid City/Mount Rushmore area in a few weeks. We're looking for some decent cross country riding. We are both good riders and are fit, but we are older so we don't really enjoy severe all-mountain type riding or places where hucking or jumping are required. In other words, we're looking for fun, flowy singletrack, and trails that take 2-3 hours to ride.
Anyone out there have any suggestions? Are there any local riding clubs that might be in the vicinity with members who like to ride with travelers?
Thanks for your assistance!
This is how it started...
There are some great bike shops in Rapid City and they will steer you to some great local riding areas. The Black Hills is very diverse and has its all-mountain areas but the majority is very ridable cross country style IMO.
Hansen Larsen Park...right in the middle of Rapid City. Home
Michelson Trail...It's a rails to trails project, easy but scenic and fun. Mickelson Trail
Centennial Trail...Pilot Knob to Rapid Creek portions...Fun! http://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_...rdb5194547.pdf
Storm Mountain is very fun along with the Bone Collector area too. Check in with Acme Bicycles, Black Hills Bicycles, Two Wheeler Dealer for some great advice.
Thank you for this wealth of information!
We will start doing our research and I have no doubts we'll find some fun rides. Thanks again!

Storm mt trails is a great xc ride with everything the hills have to offer. Also the Deerfield trail (FS trail 40) is a great relax ride starting in Silver City heading west for 4 miles as an out and back. It is flat single track along Rapid Creek in a scenic canyon. Lots of fun to be had in the hills! Let me know if you have any questions on anything.
For fun, less technical rides, Derrfield Lake trail is nice too, flowy and scenic.
One of the best rides that I know of for scenery and fun riding, without getting either boring or technical is Victoria's.
Bone collector is fun, but short and more technical.
