2013 Fool's Dozen Mounain Bike Ride in Medicine Park, OK
Since Ft. Sill is not hosting the 12 Miles of Hell, or the Hills of Hell, or the Mountains of Mayhem in 2013, we are organizing a mountain bike ride in Medicine Park, OK this year.

The "Fool's Dozen" will be an unsanctioned 12-mile fun ride for intermediate to advanced riders (too rocky to recommend to beginners). The ride will begin in downtown Medicine Park at 10:00 am on March 30, 2013.

Sign-up ($20) will be day of ride beginning at 8:00 am. First 3 dozen registrants will receive a T-shirt, so get there early.

    Ride is ON!
Only 40% chance of scattered storms. High of 70 and light east winds. Sounds nice to me. Ride is on. Even if we get rain, trail can be ridden muddy as well...It's 75% rock base.

I just rode the course yesterday and it's ready to go. The newer sections are marked with survey tape and the established sections are easy to follow. We look forward to seeing as many riders as possible come out. This is a low dough event being put together by the local riders (Mountain Bike Club of the Wichitas) to help get our local trails improved, signed and established as a system.

Keep in mind, it's just a fun ride rather than a race, so no trophies for the fast guys, but if you can make it up all the climbs without putting your foot down, you will have serious bragging rights. :)

Make sure and yield to the fisherman when you cross the dam. Don't run over their poles, bait, feet, etc. :)

Since the 2014 Sooner Stampede is going to be on 3/30, we're going to schedule the Fool's Dozen in Medicine Park, OK for the weekend of April 5th. Our goal this year is to make it more of a MTB festival and have more events like shorter group rides and a timed race. More info to come.

The old 12 Miles of Hell trails are still out there at Fort Sill. I haven't ridden them in quite a while though. You have to check in to ride them, so it's just easier to ride the trails around Lake Lawtonka.

I'm moving back to the area in a few weeks and I have just started mountain biking here in Wichita Falls. I've biked the trail here numerous times. I'm still a noob but I really enjoy riding. I'm excited about the trail in medicine park. How does it compare to the one down here. Can u break the trail up in segments so kids can join or is it kid-friendly? I have a trek hardtail 4500. Will that handle the trail fine? Also it's in need of some tires and misc upgrades. Where's a good place to go get some stuff for it and some advice on what to get. Years ago I remember Terry's bicycle was there. Are they still around? Does the place in medicine park have any accessories? Sorry of all the question but your advice is appreciated. Thanks

    Hello out there...

I am looking for a bit of guidance on a suggested route through the lake Lawtonka trails- linking some of the loops together to make for a good ride. I am new to the Lawtonka trail network having only been out one time. I have heard that there is generally a group ride that takes off from Base Camp on Saturday mornings at 9, but... these days I really have a hard time committing to specific times I have a young son that runs on his own schedule and a wife that is in grad school along with working a full time job my "free time" is at a bare minimum these days.

So.. here is where I'm at. Last weekend I drove out to the trails with the intention of doing some fact finding and trail recon to get everything in order so that when I do have enough time to ride I can go straight for it instead of figuring things out.

I started from the end of a short gravel road right near the entrance to the park. Once I arrived there was a sign that had all trail use closed with the exception of elk hunting. I must say I was not too surprised because I had heard a rumor of this..

I then circled back into town and parked at the dam where I found a trail head for the orange and yellow loops. From here I climbed up the orange crossed over to the black at 'Pete's pass' did a small amount of riding on the black loop and eventually circled back to the 'crossover' and hooked back up to the yellow loop and back to the car.

I'm anxious to get back out, and explore more of the trail system, but this time I thought I'd reach out and see if anyone has some insight on a good loop. I'm also curious to know if the blue loop is also off limits because of hunting or if that only applies to the green and red loops.

Thanks in advance.... Also.. any other trails in the area I should know about?? Thanks!

Thanks.. No Facebook for me, I think I'm the last person on earth that doesn't have a facebook account. I'll google around and see if I can get in touch with them- I have spoken to Mark on the phone- hell of a nice guy.

However, I did think this would be a great outlet for peeps to chime in on their favorite route through the trail system. As I look through the map above it looks to me like a pretty good route could be stitched together by starting yellow running the majority of the loop until it hooks back up with orange, take that to Pete's pass run the black loop back to Petes and finish it off with the remainder of the orange.

Any insight on if the blue trail (across the dam) is open during hunting season?

    Thanks!

Slow response, but...I'm usually on Medicine Park time. You found one more person on earth without facespace. Blue loop is open all the time and is not affected by hunting season.

One popular way to bring together a few of the loops is to just park in the middle of town and ride the street up to the dam. From there you can do a warm-up lap on blue, then hit orange over to the west end of the diving board section. From there, you can choose to continue on the orange loop, which takes you back to the dam or take pete's pass over to the black loop and finish out on itchy-scratchy.

We also ride on Wednesday evenings. I'll be out there about 4:40 or so at Base Camp...
