    The farmers and my grandsons.

Got the Huffy Santa Fe put back together so I could ride it to and from work last weekend. Pretty hairy riding but that's the only thing I got fenders on.

Maybe save up my money and get one of those fat bikes for next winter, or the one after that.

43.27 miles today in what I was going to call Le Tour de Topeka with Lake Shawnee added. But with a wrong turn and an extra 4 miles touring eastern Shawnee County, shall call it Le Tour de Shawnee County. Did all the paved trails I know. I know I have to work on my coming out of winter conditioning before I think about the century. My air and strength were good but my legs went to rubber at mile 35. Looked south as I was getting on Landon at 45th and noticed the unpaved Landon heading south was snow packed still. All the concrete was good, just wet from the melt.

Cool! That's quite a ride you did. I've been going to the YMCA lately. I was thinking of riding there this morning but the sidewalks are still quite covered in snow on the way there.

Bday is on Wed. and Expo found me a cheap Steelie Haro Mary SS 29'er. Wifey approved too! Hopefully we can go pick that frame up Friday night. Then the build slowly begins. This frame you can run gears on it too if you so want to. I gotta find a derailleur hanger that will fit it though.

Gonna be a fun build and I'll have my first 29'er very soon!

Well, Happy Birthday a little early. Sounds like a great present. I have to make myself ride my other bikes since I got the 29er. Really rather ride it than anything else. Looking forward to seeing how yours turns out.

Sidewalks are in rough shape everywhere, especially at the corners where it got plowed up. Lot of melt today.

Hey guys. Just checking in after being out of the loop for a couple months. Looks like no riding this weekend due to rain. :-( Who's up for hitting Perry and the mansion as much as possible this spring and summer?!

    slakjak
Hello ID, count me in. I haven't rode Perry and am really looking forward to that. I try to keep tabs on the mansion for biking and running. Might give it a peek on the 17th depending on the weather. I need that place to tear my heart out and get back into shape.

    rynoman03
I will be as long as my fitness keeps improving. The Mansion just kicks my butt and I can't imagine that Perry is very kind either. I've still got to get my fork dialed in on my 26'er and I'm building that SS 29'er that might get turned into a geared bike.

Expo and I picked up that Frame, Tires, and a Chainring Friday. I've got other parts on order and he's hooking me up with some as well as soon as I pay him. Hope to be rockin' and rollin' on that 29'er soon.

    I'm voting for gears.

Newspaper article in today's Topeka Capital Journal about a bicycle polo league forming here in Topeka. Wife was ribbing me to join in on that. Riding a bicycle on a tennis court while swinging a stick while others are doing the same? I might as well do my running with my daughter while carrying scissors. I will have to go watch it though.

Cut my rear tire on my 29'er Friday. Ended up at Capp's with a hard decision. I had lower pressure tires on it but due to me riding it everywhere and on everything, I thought it might be best to re-tire it with regular pressure tires or facing buying a lot more tires than I cared to. Really going to miss that ride though. It was so soft that I had the front shocks locked out. It did start to bounce the back end if you got pedaling too hard. Might consider getting a set to switch over to in the winter next year though. Looking at building a fat bike in the near future looks bleak unless I win a lottery.

Was crawling around the old State Hospital Grounds Friday with the StumpJumper. Not much, but better than nothing. After I got back from that, took the 29'er out to try and find a noise on it when I cut the tire. If this weather breaks, will be out tomorrow doing another Tour de Topeka, hopefully without the detours or wrong turns. Got to get into shape for a century before it gets hot.

Good luck on the build. I'm thinking about checking the mansion trail next Monday.

I rode 18.5 miles Friday.Took Shunga to Landon paved turned around and rode it back to Fairlawn then home.

Wasn't too bad. Expo has some 29'er tires he might sell ya or what not. He likes to try tires out. I got a used pair of 29er tires Friday for 28bux. Guys got alot more too. WTB, Schwab, ect... I'd go riding tomorrow with ya but 20* doesn't look too pleasant.

We need to ride again my friend. Maybe the weather will behave and we can ride a good 25miler or longer. I'm game on Thurs or Fri for anything if the weather holds out.

Bought some new Kenda Giants. Would like to run into one or two cheap WTB 29x50/50's. Those are the ones I already miss but I'm afraid I would be running through those like hotcakes. Not sure how they would hold up at a Lake Wilson with thorns and whatnot.

I know it's going to be cold tomorrow but Monday is a good day for me. Got through with the downstairs bathroom remodel and now will be starting on the master bedroom. If I get a good start on that, maybe I can eek out another long ride Thursday or Friday. The weather then looks great it if holds. Maybe enough drying this week and the possibility of trails next week.

38.36 miles. Way too cold. Surprised by some flurries and sleet also. Toes got so cold, almost bailed after 20 but luckily had packed a spare pair of lightweight gloves in case it started warming up on the ride and wanted to switch. Put them over the toes of my shoes. Looked funny but worked good enough to finish. New tires were great.

Plastic grocery bags or baggies on the inside (cut to fit and wrapped around your feet) work the best for keeping feet warm and dry when riding cold Kansas days.

Suppose to rain Saturday again. I'm still biking/running on the hard stuff right now. Trails I have seen are still wet. Will try to get up to the Governor's place by Friday to check it out and let everyone know.

If things dry out and we miss the rain on Saturday, I'm sure up for a ride on softer stuff.

Ahhhhahaha! I was just telling Expo that WallyWorld is selling these now. Ok honest opinion. Hows it ride? Is it a heavy pig? Pedals got flex in em? How many tooth front and rear?

I've seen some nice upgrades done to them already. Some are talking about drilling out the wheels to make them lighter. Others are putting Origin 8 tires on them to make them lighter.

Here's a thread of people modding them already. http://forums.mtbr.com/fat-bikes/mon...ns-846664.html

Oh and here's a finished pic of my 29'er SS.

That's a nice looking bike. What's the final weight?

About 40 or 41 years ago, I had a BSA 650. Riding the Beast reminds me of riding that BSA for some reason. (at least the Beast doesn't leak a quart of oil every 100 miles)

It's heavy and really feels strange riding it. I'm going to keep it stock for now. It's just a neat thing to ride around.

Someday I hope to get a real fat bike. Maybe things like this will bring their prices down.
  • 04-01-2013

The Haro, it's a pretty even 30lbs before I put the front brake on. I can worry about lightening it up later. It's not much heavier than my 26'er with it at 28.4lbs.

Road construction at 45th. You can ride up to near 45th if you want to.

Watch out for the mugger with pepper spray. Stole a lady's purse near the trail underpass south of Buchannan at 21st. Sprayed her. If someone tries to stop you, just run them over.

I emailed Kanza Rails To Trails about the status of the Landon Nature Trail. Here is the responses I got.

    Hello,

I was curious when the construction was due to be complete on the 45th crossing and when the Trail will reopen from 37th again. I really enjoy riding it from where it connects at Shunga all the way to 89th and back on a nice day.

I was also curious if there has been any progress made on the trail from 89th on South and when that might be opening. The Landon Nature Trail is one of my favorite trails to ride in the Topeka area and I can't wait to explore it in it's entirety.
    __________________________________________________ __________

Shawnee County Parks and Recreation is doing the trail from 37th to Sanneman Dr. as they lease that portion. I've heard they applied for a federal Transportation Enhancement grant to concrete that mile gap from 45th south.

The Conservancy has applied for two grants to finish the LNT in Shawnee County from 89th to the Osage County line. We should hear in June if we got those grants. Then construction can begin this fall.

So from what I gather it sounds like 89th St. South will not open until possibly this fall.

Rode LRT this am. Went around twice, once took the sand loop (accidentally) but it worked out well with the 29er.

Trail is dry and in fantastic shape. They had a trail work day over last weekend. I wished I would have known about it sooner, I would have liked to help.

Ran into a fantastic guy that helped me center my front brake rotor. Been having a little trouble with it since replacing my front wheel. Now it's right on.

    Can't wait to go again.

Still need to get out to Perry too. Sunday didn't work out for me at all.

Good to hear! I get off at 1030 tonight and should be home by 11. I could probably get out there by 8 if I wanted to. I've been waiting to ride the 29 SS on some more dirt. I rode the shunga dirt trails on it and it really handled them well! I just leave my fork locked most of the time. My front brake is singing too on the 29'er maybe he'll be there tomorrow. I'm gonna shoot to get there for sure though and maybe try to hit the YMCA afterwards for some strength training.

Yeah, it was on the front page this morning. Sounds encouraging.

The 29er SS will be perfect for LRT. I stayed in 3rd or 4th the majority of the trail and downshifted below that just a few times, mostly because I was lazy. I unlocked my shocks and a couple of roots made me glad I did. Tires worked great but I really missed those WTBs today.

And concerning your question on Strava; nope I don't think I could get the Beast around LRT. Probably would have to take the shell off the pickup to even get it out there. I don't think the coaster brake would be the way to go either.

I've taken the StumpJumper, the Crosstrail, and the 29er out there now. The 29er is by far the best way to get around LRT.

Mild mannered commuter or Bat Bike?
Fenders really changed the Crosstrail. Maybe with a black water bottle and a helmet, I can fight crime at night. Conversely I could put a picnic basket on the rack and pedal down to Sanneman Dr. when they get Landon sidewalked there from 45th. Still got the knobbys for it if duty calls.

Since I got fenders, going to retire the Santa Fe. Its seen good service and Kmart should be proud.

Looks good! I put 2 laps in at Lawrence River Trails this morning. About 17mi total. I would have went 3 but I talked to one of the Maintenance guys for about 30 mins asking him how to avoid the sand traps. They are planning on putting plank paths all through that sandy area with some cool banked areas. The second time through I was a little more comfortable riding the trail and rode it a bit faster. That first technical area where the jump / mound is the 29'er SS caught some pretty good air! I'm talking a good foot or two. It kinda scared me, I didn't think I put that much speed into it. I didn't have enough guts to jump the big jump mound later on though. Man that trail is fun! I prefer to ride it via non clipped in.
