Downhills with chairlifts for summer?
Does anyone know if any of the micro ski slopes around the AR, MO, KS, OK, allow bikes on their land in the summer? And if not, then lets get a bunch of people to call and find a way to make it happen. I know there is one in Weston, MO near Kansas City and there is also one in or near St. Louis. I don't know if there is anything on the slopes worth riding really, but it can't be horrible. Add a few temporary (or permanent) jumps in there somewhere and it would keep me busy for a full day. There has to be some singletrack around those places, and if not, I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to build some. Any input?
There has been talk about getting mountain biking at Hidden Valley Ski Resort in Eureka, Missouri. While it is not allowed and I am not sure it will happen, there has been rumblings of it, so who knows what the future could bring. Could be an extra revenue maker for them in the summer months, especially considering how bad of a ski season it was for them due to the unseasonably warm winter. Definitely check this post out from GORC as they have talked about it to some length GORC Message Board.
There is also a lot of singletrack close to Hidden Valley to get your fix. Chubb and Greensfelder are only minutes from there, as is Castelwood (via your bike) and many other trails to choose from all within 30 - 60 minutes from Hidden Valley. See GORC - Trail Maps.

That's a great little list to have. I certainly hope something does come of adding mountain biking to hidden valley. There is a huge gap in the middle of the US as far as bike parts with lifts.
People have tried to get something going with the folks at Snow Creek. Not sure what the deal breaker was...probably the added insurance cost.
I never heard about that with HV. If the opened it, I would be their biggest customer bar none.
Has there been a petition/any approach? If not, I might have to head it up.
I actually have plans (shhhhh......) to buy an extensive tract of land and build an exclusive mountain bike / freeride park. But thats a ways off.....
Peace from Hell...

I emailed Snow Creek in Weston. They said they tried it once and it was a huge flop. Said they had about 15 bikes all summer. Although I agree that it's probably not worth it for the effort and money to do it, my guess is that they didn't advertise well, didn't network with avid bikers to spread the word, and didn't get the word to a far enough distance.
People would not drive much of a distance for a green hill, but if in the spring they could get someone to design jumps and obstacles and get a solid team of volunteers willing to build it I think it could be a huge success. I think they should contact all bike shops that carry bigger hitting bikes within a 500 mile radius, as well as post here on mtbr.com forums and pinkbike.com forums. AND if they had some areas that were BMX friendly then that scene could provide even more customers.
If the place is just opened up, then yes, it would just flop. But with the right person that can forsee its success I think it would guarantee that success. If I lived there I would be glad to do it. My wife is also in the social work field and knows how to write grants, which I think we could get to encourage area tourism.
Wish I lived there... kinda. Much better riding here in NW Arkansas currently.
I live in Kc and I vaguely remember hearing about downhill at Snowcreek, but that was many years ago and times have changed. If they had that park I and many others in this city would be there at least once a week. Way more than 15 bikes. It would be great if a park opened in the mid-west area. The closest I know of to KC is Colorado.
I know it's a bit of a drive, but Angel Fire would be worth your time. The snowboarding is good, but not in the class of Colorado but the mountain biking is world class in the summer.
