Good job! 2012 Black Hills Fat Tire Festival

Trails are bone dry in the Black Hills of SD right now. Come out memorial day weekend for a great time of riding, good beer, socials, and racing!

Racing categories for this suck. Pro class and everyone else? Last year the super d was divided up into regular catergories and then after everyone ran they changed the categories into what they posted on the website. If the promoters are that fickle then I don't want to support them. And besides the pro class is where people care the most about finishing well. Most are huge primadonas. So when they have a choice to be in the pro class with a bunch of 28 yr olds or race the 40-49 sport class, what are they going to do. This year I will keep my 65$ or whatever it cost to enter because it isn't worth it and support the local club here in Laramie.

I understand your concern which is the reason we made changes for the upcoming festival. This year categories have been changed to Expert, Advanced, and Sport with age divisions you would find for USA Cycling events. The racing categories page was supposed to be updated, but must have gotten overlooked, so we apologize about that. Sorry for any confusion, and if you have any direct inquiries, please send me a personal message and I would be happy to get in touch with you.

My bad. I didn't actually go to the registration sign in page because of the category posting on the main page.

Is it a requirement to register online for the XC race - or can we just show up at the Festival and register the day before or the day of race?

    TIA

Per the schedule on the Fat Tire Festival Website, registration closes Saturday at 4:00. It is not required to register prior, but allows you the option to not worry about it when you get here.

What is the can't miss action at the festival this year?

Does anyone know what the group rides will consist of. I'm hoping to hook up with some fun moderatly techy single track. Any ideas?

Just moved to Rapid City so any other rides that fit the bill will be appreciated.

Fun socials, good rides, good people, and fun races. Not to mention plenty of demo bikes to ride from Specialized, Kona, Rocky Mountain, Niner, Giant, and Scheel's demo fleet of Treks. It will be a fun weekend.

Group rides will be going to all sorts of different locations, just show up around 8:30 or so each morning and get together with some of the folks taking people out. They will be congregating around the white tent set up at the base of Hanson-Larsen Memorial Park. And a lot of the trails around here fit the description you are looking for, check out BHMBA.org for some maps.

Also feel free to swing by ACME Bicycles and I can direct you to some more info, rides, etc...

Is it just me? I can't find anything about camping on the BH Fat Tire Festival website. I'm pretty sure they have had information on the site before, but this year I can't find it. Is it at the Fair Grounds this year?

It also seems the Festival has been shortened to just 2 days this year as opposed to 3-4 days in prior years.

The camping link on the festival is through the scrolling marquee at towards the top which has for some reason stopped scrolling. If you click on one the squares (the one farthest right), you will be able to link to the camping page for the Fairgrounds.

The schedule is the same as previous years: Welcome Social on Friday, Rides/Races/Demos/Fun on Saturday, Ride/Races/Demos/Social/Fun on Sunday, and low key rides with anyone and anywhere you feel like hitting up on Monday.

Many people have their favorites, but in my opinion one of the best rides is the Rim Trail ride leaving Sunday at 9 AM from the white tent. This ride will also hook you up with some good folks that do group rides a couple times a week. These rides will show you most of the popular trails

How wet is it out in the Hills with all the radar being green the past 48 hours (with more coming)? Will it alter plans for the demo, the races, the rides, etc...?

    TIA

It rained most the day but a light rain. I think we ended up with a half an inch. Hiked this afternoon and the trails soaked it up well. Looks like Friday might be hit and miss showers, with Saturday and Sunday dry. Sounds like it didn't really rain in the northern slopes. M hill might be affected Friday and hopefully rideable by Saturday. Otherwise several trails will be riding great in the hills, with or without rain. It was quite dry before this so it's really soakIng it up. Just stop by the bhmba tent and find out which trails are rideable. Trust me, we could get 4 inches of rain and there's always something to ride.
