I've had decent results with the old Cateye magnets (about $6). The trick I use is to screw the magnet in place then put a small dab of Shoe Goo adhesive on the spoke just ahead of the magnet to keep it from slipping farther out. So I am not really gluing the magnet in place, but just using the glue to make a hard stop to keep the magnet from moving (let the glue cure a day or so before riding). And if needed, the magnet can be removed and the dried glue scraped off with a fingernail.

And for the crank magnet, I use a high strength button magnet stuck to the steel pedal spindle.

I've used this type. That type also looks like what came with my Garmin Edge 800 GPS.

I've had good results with them. I use them on all my bikes including my cross and touring bikes that see lots of gravel and dirt riding. Both those bikes have no suspension and thus the wheels see every bump in the road/trail and as long as I have the little dab of glue on the spoke outside the magnet, they seem to stay put Without the glue, I had a time or two were the magnet would slip outward on the spoke enough to miss the pickup sensor.

    whats your favorite spoke magnet

I have a cat eye that the magnet bridges two spokes. Not sure why they went away from that? Never moves or spins.

    whats your favorite spoke magnet

I use a flat rare earth magnet that has a touch of jb weld holding it to the spoke. Works great and never moves. Search Icarus on eBay. They sell lots of them for a few bucks.

That black smudge is all that there is to it. They come in a silvery color too.
