What GPS for back country exploring?

I have a Garmin edge 200 and I like it for a cycling computer. But I have been trying to get out and explore areas I haven't ridden before so I wan't something with good trail maps. Whats the best way to go?

I have an eTrex that I like. Can load free maps into it so I can always tell where I am in relation to topo and/or roads. Also good that it runs on batteries if you'll be out for a very long time (multiple days) or you could use a solar charger for rechargable gps like the edge models.

You may find better thoughts in the bikepacking forum also.

You'll have the best results with a hiking model. eTrex, Oregon, Dakota, 62, etc. Replaceable batteries are better options for a few days than a solar charger. Solar chargers don't work that great and do best out in full sun while stationary. If you'll be out for weeks, then a solar charger's benefits start to outshine hauling around that many batteries.

I should have been more thorough. Was thinking solar charger would be charging batteries (mine charges 4) while your using another set for longer trips. But yeah, you're somewhat out of luck if it's cloudy/raining etc. Nate hawk knows his stuff though for sure.

I second looking at the etrex series. Small, light, long battery life, and replaceable aa batts.
I'm looking forward to regretting this.......
