    Software for GPS

I am planning on getting a Garmin Edge 705. My colleague has one and raves about how it is great for mtb and road cycling and he uses it to replace his polar without a problem for managing his training.

Anyway he told me about some software that uses topo maps. You can select any 2 points and the SW will determine a route for you. The route calculation can be based on a car or bike as the transport method. You can also say, avoid paved roads or avoid unpaved roads, etc. It is an additional purchase because the Edge does not come with this software.

Does anyone know what Software this could be? I was thinking it would be great to plan a trip from Switzerland to Italy with the Software and then save that to my GPS.

    Yes, Garmin City Navigator (link).

There is a free map called Ibucus, but it will not auto route; as far as I know, City Nav is the only thing that will.
