    Karoo Hammerhead

Just saw something about this on Facebook. Have any of you guys looked at it? Seems to tick a bunch of boxes.

I have been on the Hammerhead mailing list for what seems like eternity, waiting for an actual release. I started to think it was vaporware.

Read the comments at the end from peeps who have already received one.

10 hour battery life is a deal breaker.

Yep. I frequently will spend all day in the woods. Maybe not all day actively riding, but short enough stops that turning the computer on/off every time to save battery would be a pain in the a$$. I have had a couple of days like that exceed 10hrs. And enough have been close enough (over 8hrs) that there's ZERO margin for error if, say, it's cold enough to reduce battery life, or the use of extra sensors cuts battery life, or I spend a little time fiddling with the computer so I can look at the map or whatnot.

And definitely not good enough to handle a couple of days of long rides without carrying additional crap to recharge. A weekend bikepacking trip, perhaps.

I make do with an Edge 520 which claims 15hrs, but would prefer 20+. For basecamp type riding, I don't have a battery life problem, since my little camper has an onboard battery with solar that can recharge the Edge overnight. With a 10hr max life, there'd probably be some trips where I wouldn't even be able to finish the day. I could do a single overnight bikepacking trip without recharging if each day was kept under 7hrs, but 2 nights probably wouldn't work without a recharge and extra bits and pieces to make that happen.

This is why so many bikepackers like etrexes, since some of those will get up to 25hrs AND the batteries are field-replaceable.

Harold - thatís an interesting thought on the etrex. Iím not really that interested in heart rate monitors, speed sensors, etc - the etrex looks like it would allow me to load gpx files and track distance (the two things I want on a new gps/bike computer). Time to do some more research...

Etrex 30 is a favorite of divide and other ultra endurance racers.
