    Etrex vista hcx v 305

Can't decide which would be better for me.. Need help.

Primary function would be following others tracks/trails.

If you dont need cadence and heart rate monitor the etrex works awesome. I have the Hcx and use the garmin handlebar mount... It works great.

While you can follow someone else's tracks on either, I've found it much easier to follow a track overlaid on a map. Since the 305 doesn't support mapping, I'd go for the vista hcx.

Well, I'd go for the vista for other reasons too, but specific for your use I think it's the better option.
I'm looking forward to regretting this.......

I would go with the Vista HCX. I've had mine for about 4 months now and it works great, a huge improvement over my old Legend C.

It's hard to say, since you don't really elaborate on any other functions you might like to have.

But solely for what you mention, the Vista has the slight edge.

Is it possible to view current speed and distance with the Vista Hcx?

but remember it is not ground distance like a bike computer.

Natehawk- Why do you think the hcx is only slightly better? Aside from the hrm and cadence the vista has a better chip and so many more features. Plus you can use it as a general GPS. I took mine moose hunting and it was indispensible.

The OP didn't give us much information to go on. For simply following others' tracks, you get a better basemap. Both will follow old tracks, but a basemap makes that easier.

The two GPSes are very different from each other, and the OP has not told us whether he or she wants a hrm or cadence, a stem mount, rechargeable battery, replaceable batteries, courses, virtual partner, barometric altimeter, electronic compass, or any of the number of features that set these two GPS receivers off from each other. You can't really compare side by side with such a tiny amount of information and say which is better for the intended use.

I can't see paying that much money on a GPS like the 305 that won't even show you a map.
