drawing a route on a map?

I'm OK with tech, but not completely aware of what's out there. Does anyone know of a map site where I could zoom in and actually sketch my route? I'm trying to share a local loop I really enjoy. I have yet to capture a clean version on my Garmin. Mostly due to user error, like pausing and forgetting to restart, but also because the route isn't exactly perfect, so its not precisely overlaid on the trails I ride every single time.

On trails? that's going to be really difficult unless you have a really good basemap that includes those trails.

There's a way to pull it off, but it requires relatively advanced use of mapping software (not compared to what I do in an academic setting, but definitely compared to what most folks do with mapping software).

If the trail is visible on Google Earth, you can go into Tools/Ruler and select path. Then you can save the path to your "My Places". Then you can save it as a KML or KMZ file. now you have a file that can be sent/viewed on Google Earth as well as other mapping interfaces. The key is that you either can see the trail, or you know right where it is. It took me about 15 minutes to do a 4 mile trail in the Boise Foothills named Corrals/Scotts.

I forgot to mention that you have to mouse click along the trail - that is what does the "drawing". it is a little labor intensive, but free.
